I change the out of date carbon monoxide (CO) alarm in the caravan and read out some information on CO. I also take a quick look at the house CO alarm.
Hi Phil, With this digital model we will be able to see even the smallest amount of CO if it was present, not that we want to see any! Yes check that smoke alarm battery. Thanks for watching and take care. Rob
Hi Rob. I came across this video while looking for the best place to fit a CO alarm as I have just had to buy a new one following the annual caravan service. I'd replaced my old alarm with a combined smoke and CO alarm and thought it would be fine. However, my keen eyed service engineer informed me the one I'd fitted didn't conform to the correct standard for caravans, boats and motorhomes. Like the alarm you have fitted a CO alarm for such applications must comply with BS EN 50291-2. I bet I'm not the only one who didn't know that.
Hi Steve, Yes I knew about choosing the right CO alarm for the right application. The one I fitted does comply to BS EN 50291-2 and is suitable for caravans and motor homes. You’re right, some people don’t realise the importance of choosing the correct alarm. Thanks for tuning in and commenting. All the best, Rob 👍
Sound advice as always Rob! 😊 The belt and braces bloke in me would change the second hand van alarm as I'd always be wary if the previous owner had taken an old alarm out and stuck it in the van you've bought, so the expiry date wouldnt tally. Like you say, for the sake of a few quid, its peace of mind for 7yrs. Cheers for this one mate 👍 Martin.
Agree Martin, not worth taking chances where safety is concerned. The past 8 years have flown by for us, you soon lose track of time. Thanks for watching and take care. Rob
Great vlog Rob, strangely we've just had our Margo (caravan) today the report picked up the Carbon monoxide is due for renewal!! Thanks again for highlighting such important components.. 👍
Thought I would include the mains interlinked alarms as the home is just as important as the caravan, and it was these that prompted me to do the caravan video. Thanks for watching Graeme. Regards. Rob
Well explained Rob, i need to check ours when we go up to the van. I also need to get one for the home, we only have a gas boiler but still feel we should have one. Thanks for sharing, Martin
Thank you Martin. Would be interesting to see if there is a date on the one in the van. Best having one in the home, you can't be too careful. Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Stay safe. Rob
We had our annual service last year for the house gas boiler, we got an X for not having a carbon monoxide alarm, so purchased the fire angel one in the this video for the house, funnily enough I also checked the caravan one earlier to see if it was in date etc whilst I was changing the TPMS system and sensors from Michelin to Tyrepal. For some reason the Michelin sensors are non user serviceable so when the batteries go, the whole system is no good - not very eco friendly
Hi Paul, Am I correct the Tyrepal sensor batteries are replaceble? I've read some have a sealed unit because of the environment they are in. Take care. Rob
Your alarm is positioned high up. Carbon monoxide i believe is heavier than air so that means you still might be exposed at sleeping level. I would fix a second alarm lower down to cover more area. I have lived in a campervan for 6 years and it has a low ceiling. The highest reading of carbon monoxide i have ever seen is around 45 to 50 ppm. That's on a hot day with the doors closed and 4 windows cracked open. The cause is solar battery charging in my case. I have 1 alarm near the ceiling in one corner and another at sitting head height where I lounge.
Hi Rai, I fixed the new alarm in the same place as the one fitted at the factory. Yes I suppose it would be better fitting one at a lower level to cover sleeping and sitting. Cheers. Rob
Another great informative technical video Rob. You clearly have a knack at doing these and I'm intrigued to know, what's your profession? Kind regards Phil
Hi Rob. Such an important bit of kit. We have same one as your New One. You have reminded I need to test the battery the smoke Alarm. Thanks Phil🙂👍

Thank you Howard. Shows they have done a good inspection for you. Thanks very much for watching. Stay safe. Rob
Thanks for the mains interlinked review. Sounds good.

Thank you very much for the compliment Phil. I'm just a keen DIYer jack of all trades and work in civil engineering. Best regards. Rob
Ah, not surprised you're in engineering Rob! Thanks for the reply and take care!
