Justin Ferriman Magnus might struggle a bit in the first game but he would fogure the game out so quickly that he would just end up crushing Yasser in every game after that
Yeah but regular chess is challenging because people memorize openings. I think Yasser is retaining the beauty of the opening setup while introducing the option to bring in new pieces wherever the player wants.
it would be really nice if the variant becomes more popular (and perhaps replace chess in 40-50 years), i have played at least 15-20 games (mostly against the computer though), and i can guarantee that once someone understands the game, they wouldn't want to go back to regular chess
2:35 I haven't play much of this, but my thinking is that when you move your first bishop off the back rank, fill in that square with a hawk (so the bishop is covered), and when you move your first knight off the back rank, you can use the elephant (as it will also be covered by the knight-move of the elephant).
His values are: Pawn 2 Knight 6 Bishop 7 Rook 10 Hawk 12 + |1> + i|5> {quantum superposition notation} Elephant 16 Queen 16 Based off maximum enemy spaces able to be reached in one move and the hawk’s ability to check by itself.
Fun fact: in shetranj, the older version of modern chess the bishops were actually elephants and they moved only two diagonal squares just like in Chinese chess, and the rooks were chariots and they moved the same and they are also called chariot in Chinese chess. Also fan fact: shatranj is still the name for the modern chess in Arabic, also another fun fact the queen was a vazir and moved like an advisor in Chinese chess. All those chess games are like different languages of the same group language, interesting...
Here's one place that you could pick them up: www.houseofstaunton.com/musketeer-chess-elephant-and-hawk-kit-sharper-kit-4-pieces.html I would imagine there are other places selling them as well.
It would be so interesting to see AlphaZero learn this game and really show some top level games. Maybe it is an awesome game with a lot more depth...would be cool to see.
I'm all about the elephant, but a hawk, and suddenly too many animals on the board. The "knight" is actually a horse shapped figure and in many languages it is actually named "horse" and not knight. So all suddenly the game is a zoo with three different animals. I would suggest to keep the elephant, because it gives this indian reference, and keep the chancelor, it gives the game a "geopolitical" vibe which is very welcoming and ellegant, the chancelor is a diplomat and it is all in the gentleman's spirit of the game.
I doubt he randomly came up with elephant. In Chinese chess (中国象棋), the elephant (象) has existed for a long time and its movement is similar to the bishop. For those who are interested in chess variants, perhaps after you get bored of s-chess, try some Chinese chess!
I'm not sure that he's claiming to come up with it, but rather to pay homage to all those games which featured the elephant (especially from chaturanga). Xianqi is fun, but I don't like all the stalemate/threefold rules.
very fun. however, the nervous tapping of pieces on the table comes across quite loudly and on a video is quite distracting. small item compared to the genius of the new S Chess game.
We need this variant on lichess
chess osu yes! that would awesome
chess osu I don't understand :/ if that piece has the power of the rook and the bishop doesnt it move the same as the queen?
Its because lichess uses Glicko-2, which is a newer rating system... has nothing to do with the players. ;l
its knight and rook for the elephant and knight and bishop for the hawk. No new piece is a rook and bishop..
Seirawan vs. Magnus at s-chess. Make it happen.
Justin Ferriman Magnus might struggle a bit in the first game but he would fogure the game out so quickly that he would just end up crushing Yasser in every game after that
eric hansen casually walks in I love how close all these guys are! chess is amazing!
Regular chess is challenging enough. Yasser is super cool though.
Yas is a mad scientist

chessbrah invasion
video is great btw

I love this variant, i even have a wooden set of it
Yaseer could replace some of the 70s' James bond villains!! Calm, cool, sophisticated but with evil intentions.. loved the way he destroyed Greg
In some other countries they are already calling the bishop "the elephant."
like India I think
in Russia too
+Ivan Petrov True, and there are many more.
Bazarov Nihil in india we call it elephant and its real cuz chess was first established in India.
Also Turkey. Turkey has different named Queen too. We call the Queen 'Vizier'. Our historical consultant of Sultans named Vezir.
The hawk is a totally sick piece. Definitely my favourite.
Awesome. The in-game banter is a crack up.
Yasser thinks the Elephant is worth about 9 and the Hawk is about 7
Greg Shahade Does he really? Or Do You Think That, Make A Video About this comment 😂😂
Greg Shahade by the way why does it always say STOP STALKING ME ALREADY in EVERY description
more like 8 and 6
I hope we’ll have Alpha Zero tell us the value after playing itself a million times. Same with other variant pieces for that matter.
His values are:
Pawn 2
Knight 6
Bishop 7
Rook 10
Hawk 12 + |1> + i|5> {quantum superposition notation}
Elephant 16
Queen 16
Based off maximum enemy spaces able to be reached in one move and the hawk’s ability to check by itself.

how did you made the pieces? they look stunning!!! also, I loved this variant, gotta try it!

i think bringing in the elephant or hawk should be considered an extra move, cause its too powerfull otherwise!
It would be so interesting to see AlphaZero learn this game and really show some top level games. Maybe it is an awesome game with a lot more depth...would be cool to see.
acrobatman it’d definitely help us learn the value of the pieces.
David the Legend was in that video.
Great videography!
Nice, something different is always welcome. Great to see Mr. GM Seirawan.

Definitely interesting. It feels like Chess960 is the most elegant solution though.
So the elephant at 3:08 is useful in the trunk line.
You see that coke between the two tables? It's now water.
He looks so much like brazilian singer and songwritter lulu santos

How much would those peices be worth? (Like queen is 9)
Arish Virani He said that elephant would be about 9 and hawk 7
Crazy and brilliant at the same time :D
motoko
Greg, How the Elephant and Hawk move? This is something seemed like the Capablanca´s chees?
Yasser explains that the idea was originated from Capablanca's chess.
Hawk = Rook+Bishop
Elephant = Rook+Knight
MMichael Hawk = Knight + Bishop actually
Oops my bad, you're right :)
When Chess becomes so BORING, you inject new ideas to keep your sanity intact LOL!
BRILLIANT!

I love Yasser but I still have my 500$ worth of Masterpiece games stock certificates and I feel like I I paid a month for his car.
