My grandfather was a Sergeant and a tank commander in the British 7th, and later 11th Armoured Division in World War 2. He fought against the Germans in N.Africa with the 7th, and then later in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the 11th. He died in 2001 and never talked about the war much, but one thing he always said was that the Germans were excellent soldiers and he respected them. That most of the ones he met were not fervent Nazis, they were young men like him who were doing what they were ordered to do and doing it as best they could. He always said, the Brits who called them Krauts and Nazi scum were usually the guys at the back lines washing socks. The real soldiers always had a mutual respect for each other. This great film shows that, in my opinion.
+Nick Wolfe Respect for your grandfather but belive me I've met a lot of people who got through shit your grandfather probably did.Everyone hated everyone, there was almost no respect when you knew they were killing and torturing your friends, you hated them and wanted to kill all of them. One of the people I knew said that at one point the fear and all of the talking got to him to the point that he was thinking of strapping a granade to him self and going to for them to kill as many as he could. That just shows how much hate there was.
+Strategist315 maybe that was at the time but maybe when they thought about it in retrospective they were just doing their job and some of them doing it for their country.

Greyhound was written for an American audience with the attention span of a flea and a highly caricatured view of themselves and the world around them. So was U-571, to be honest.
@@Alex462047 U-571 was good for the first 5 minutes because it actually looked like Das Boot. Then the Holywood hit... Das Boot is simply different class. You can't compare movies like Greyhound, U571, Red October to Das Boot. It's like comparing a handful of sand to diamonds.
In any case I am not saying that greyhound is a perfect film. However we also need to consider the background of the two films. Although both are book adaptations, Das Boot based on Das Boot (shocker) which is based on Buchheims experience as a correspondent on U-96. It is centered on the entire crew and their war patrol. Greyhound is based on book Good Shepherd (very good reading) and the story is centered on Commander Krause commanding the ship and no one else. Problem with Greyhound being an adaptation of the book is that in the book large portion of text is Krause's thoughts which is quite hard thing to put on screen. With that said Greyhound is doing a good job in being as much faithful to the book as it was possible. And yes the submarine dogfight actually happened involving USS O'Bannon and a japanese submarine and was even crazier that in the film.

English transcript is worthless compared to original dialogue.. Can't always figure out what they are saying in German though - much accent and slang. Was looking for a German transcript but the only ones I've found were from English transcript which makes it go around in circles getting even worse..
A lot of it is really watered down, or even added. Like when the crew of the sunken ship starts swimming towards them and in the subtitles someone says: "We can't take prisoners." That was never mentioned, only an order was given out to back away.
I was in submarine like this, near Hamburg, and believe me, with this film you will feel everything. Best off from submarines film area production.... And book is also perfect.,
I think no one will ever make better film about u-boats and even about submarines. Only comparable movie for me are K-19 The Widowmaker and The Enemy Below, but Das Boot is best submarine movie ever and listening it in german, that's another level. I think war movies are one of the hardest kind of movies to make and be successful and more than that, war movies about submarines.
truly great movie. you watch those sailors waiting for their own deaths, and they die at the end, so there's no escape for them. must have been how actual soldiers felt in war. really frustrating experience, which this film translates in to such a language, which viewer gets straight in to his heart. sad, and wonderful. thank you for sharing

Lately I've seen a lot of truly great movies(m,tokyo story,ugetsu,rashomon,2001,the battle of algieres...) But this, this masterpiece takes the top spot I can't bielive how powerful a movie can be Truly an amazing piece
A great movie you should check out is Waterloo. They used 17000 real soldiers for the battle re-enactments, all of them trained to 18th century line drill, complete historic accuracy down to the freaking buttons on the uniforms. A really impressive work, if you ask me. And thanks for reminding me of Ugetsu, I still have that on my bucket list.
my german is pretty basic. what does the last part mean? "do you have hair in your nose?" "yeah, so what?" ' well, I also have hair in my arse, we can something'
Gosh... that's the first time I'm seeing this with the English subtitles... and they're quite bad, I have to say.... but still the best naval war picture ever done, possibly the best war movie overall.
Damn, this music can not be forgotten. And it passed so many years since this movie was made. In the first few seconds I can always guess the movie. Great movie. Pitty Germans didn't make more of it.
They were dead as soon as they got on the boat, it's just a long trip trough the land of the dead. Things like when they meet the other U boat in the storm, it's just a shadow and one blinking light, no humans. When they sink the tankers they don't even see it, they just hear it. And the burning people they didn't save, they are dead like the crew. Constantly hunted by the grim reaper aka destroyers and planes. When they enter the fancy boat in Spain, it's like they surfaced from hell into a real world. But fuck you, go back to hell. The final torment being sunk and on the bottom, still fighting not to die, still hoping they might make it. And in the last scene, the boat is behind the barbed fence, it's like no, you are not coming back. And the worst part is, it probably was like that for any Uboat crew back in the day. Pure horror. This movie is amazing.
