Der Welterfolg aus der Tiefe.
Eine U-Boot-Besatzung wird zum legendären Stab des erfolgreichsten deutschen Films aller Zeiten. Doch er stand unter keinem guten Stern. Vom Streit über das Drehbuch über Unfälle am Set bis hin zum Vorwurf der Kriegsverherrlichung - immer wieder steht das Projekt vor dem Aus. Die Dokumentation zeigt unveröffentlichte Interviews mit Stars und Machern des Films und fragt: Wie konnte trotz aller Widrigkeiten so ein Mythos entstehen?
Der fertige Film wird in Deutschland kontrovers diskutiert: Entweder wird der Film als kriegsverherrlichend oder als Schändung der deutschen Marinesoldaten angeprangert. So fungiert diese Produktion auch als Spiegelbild der deutschen Gesellschaft in den frühen 80er Jahren.
Doch die internationale Rezeption ist überwältigend. Viele Schauspieler aus dem Cast werden durch den Film berühmt, Regisseur Petersen begründet mit diesem Film seine Hollywoodkarriere. "Das Boot" wird zum Klassiker.

"Machen Sie Fotos von einlaufenden Mannschaften, nicht von auslaufenden. Dann haben sie einen Wert." ... Da überlegt man dann erst, was das heißt.. wir haben uns das Mahnmal in Laboe angeschaut, das Buch selbst ist auch eher kritisch als kriegsheroisch. Da wird viel über Sinn oder Unsinn geschrieben. Finde auch, dass dieser Film wirklich realistisch und nah am Thema zeigt, wie es vermutlich wirklich war. Männer, die versuchten, ihren Job zu machen, die sich beim Geräusch der Propeller in die Hose machten, und nicht die typischen deutschen Helden waren.
Was Sie ganz kriegsheroisch ,,ihren Job machen" nennen,bezeichnen kritisch Denkende und Fühlende ganz einfach als"(Angriffs-)Krieg machen".
NICHT "Dann haben Sie einen Wert" Sondern "Weil Sie dann Bärte haben" Die Tommys müssen sich ja schämen, wenn sie in der Zeitung lesen, wer ihnen die Hölle heiß macht. Säuglinge die an die Mutterbrust gehören......

As an American whose father and two uncles were deep into WW2 (my father a prisoner of the Nazis, one uncle lost leg lost at Bastogne, and the yoiungest at 18 years killed at Remagen in the Iast horrors of the war, I can still appreciate the artistry of Das Boot. Actually I was sad at the ending when the cripppled boat returns to La Rochelle and is then bombarded and the crew lying dead and wounded on land not in the sea. I had to remind myself that the boat was an enemy and the crew Nazi sailors. The film speaks to human issues, no matter the side the viewer may be seeing it from. It is to me a human story, not just a war story in itself.
My Brothers Godfather was a Captain in the Gulf of Mexico for the U.S.N.R... This movie is a important part of my life, years later I feel his trepidation over the U- Boats. The discovery of the U- boats at the bottom of the Gulf is a somber reminder. He never said anything about the War years.
They were not Nazi sailors. They were German Navy servicemen who followed their orders. They were no more Nazis than U.S. sailors are Democrats. The mission is your duty. But, yes, otherwise. My dad was a WW2 U.S. Navy vet. The one who first showed me this movie.
This is one of the best films ever made, imo. I still treasure my DVD of it and watch it at least once a year.
This is an OUTSTANDING FILM! I have the director's cut, and I saw the TV series years ago. As a US Navy veteran, albeit on destroyers, they accurately captured shipboard life; they got the monotony right, and they also got the dialog right. Sailors insult each other like they do in Das Boot; for example, on my ship, we had someone whose farts could rival Frentzen's! Sailors fight after being cooped up; the smallest thing could spark a fight. Even though I had relatives fighting in WWII, I identified with the crew; I hoped that they'd get back and eventually live their lives. I found the ending sad and tragic; it's like after all they'd been through, many of them get killed in the aerial attack.
What I also like about Das Boot is the sensory impressions, and how the filmmakers put you, the viewer, in the sub with the crew. I'll never forget the dripping water, and how loud it sounded when they were running quiet and silent as they evaded British destroyers. I could almost FEEL the smelly, sticky air! I like the camera work too; that was genius! The way Jost Vocano runs through the boat shows you how small and tight it is. That was GENIUS! In American WWII films set on submarines, everything looks big on the boat. Granted, our subs were bigger than the German U-boats, but they weren't big or luxurious, either. Vocano's camera work showed just how tight and cramped the German U-boats were. Jost Vocano was a GENIUS!
For me, what makes this an outstanding film is it portrays the German sailors as human beings, not all gung-ho Nazis. Even though I used to root against the Germans in war films and documentaries like "Victory at Sea"; though I wanted to see the U-boats destroyed when I was younger; I wanted the U-96 crew to make it home. It's a testament to the film's power that, though I grew up in America, an opponent of Germany during WWII, part of me was pulling for the crew to make it. As I said above, the ending always gets me. Das Boot is a great film! It wouldn't have been the great classic it is today had it been made in America rather than Germany....

I was able to watch in the theater in early 1980’s in USA (I was 28)
And watched again last night on a streaming source. This is an incredible movie.
I remember when this was first released in England, and it stunned me like no other film had, total respect. Who needs Hollywood 😊

This film truly did set a new benchmark for movies of its kind, and we actually saw quite a few of the same techniques being used later on by Hollywood in The Hunt for Red October.

Das Vorbild für die Figur von Pilgrim hat sich aus Scham erhängt nachdem Buchheim seinen Roman veröffentlicht hat. Anscheinend war er nach dem Krieg sehr christlich religiös und hat seine eigene Darstellung als Bordschwein nicht verkraftet. Man muss sich das erstmal vorstellen: Den U-Boot überlebt und sich dann das Leben nehmen als man wieder von der eigenen Vergangenheit eingeholt wird.
Das ist schon eine andere Dimension als die Aussage eines talentierten, leider verstorben Schauspielers

Die lange Fernsehfassung war am besten. Man konnte den Gestank im Boot buchstäblich riechen.
Der Grund wieso der Film so erfolgreich ist, ist meiner Meinung nach, dass er erzählt und nicht wertet.
Habe das Buch schon als Jugendlicher verschlungen , mehrmals gelesen .
Als der Film dann kam war ich ob der Wucht des Gesehenen schlicht überfordert .
Ein Meilenstein der Filmgeschichte !!!

Der beste Kriegfilm überhaupt. Es wurden so viele Emotionen gezeigt deswegen.

Meisterhafte Leistung, es war der lieblings Film meines Vaters als Kind hatte ich ihn gesehen mit ihm, da war ich aber noch zu klein um was zu checken. Vor 2 Tagen hab ich ihn nochmal gesehen und muss echt sagen er ist jetzt auch mein lieblings Film es kommt alles so echt rüber und das für ein Deutschen Film. Lohn und Anmerkungen an alle.
Schade das nie mehr sowas gekommen ist.
Jetzt werde ich mir die Serie auf Netflix anschauen da ich nicht mehr von dem Film weg komme😅😂

Someone has suggested to watch the movie (whichever version) in a darkened room on ly lit by one red lightbulb. added the smell of badly cooked food, and turn down the heat to get the right feeling.
Also known as an English narrowboat in winter. 😂. I live on one and the parallels are striking

Sorry, dass ich so direkt frage... Ich bin a) "Wessi", und b) erst 1987 geboren... Wurde der Film tatsächlich auch in der damaligen DDR gezeigt?
Die Frage ist in keinster Weise böse gemeint! Ich dachte nur immer dass die DDR so ihre Probleme mit "Westfilmen" hatte...?

So wurden Filme gedreht früher. Heute nur am PC gemacht. Die ganzen Filmstudios sollten mal auf die alten Werte setzen.
Hauptsache der Film kostet Millionen und die Schauspieler machen nicht selbst.
Es gibt keinen besten Kriegsfilm. Allein wo das Boot untergeht 90m 130m und es heißt das Boot ist nicht zu stoppen. 290m glaube ich am Schluss. Die Emotionen waren genial man hatte selbst extreme Angst.
Die Dreharbeiten waren extrem schwierig. Aber der Film ist eine Legende und Kult. Das sollen die Amis erst mal schaffen.

Aber nur in der TV-Fassung!
Die umgeschnittene lang Version ist auch sehr gut. Bei fast 5 Stunden fühlt man sich als Teil der Mannschaft 😊

Der einzige Film der besser wird je länger er ist! Ich glaube auch eine 10 Stunden Version hätte funktioniert. Vermutlich hätte es jedoch zuviel Herzinfarkte verursacht.

One of the best films of all time. And you absolutely have to watch the full length version. I never grow tired of watching it. Fantastic story, great acting, amazing dedication to making it feel real. As someone fortunate enough to have not had to experience war, it makes me think of how incredibly lucky I am, compared to those young men on both sides that had to live through such times.

Ich denke, die meisten französischen Statisten aus La Rochelle sind später sehr stolz, in diesem Film mitgespielt zu haben. Das können sie auch sein.
Wenn Jan Fedder erzählt ist es immer dopoelt so dramatisch. 😂
A really good movie, very sad…But, this film really gave you a feel for what life was like aboard a U-Boat from the crew’s perspective.

I love this film. My father fought in WW2 and he identified strongly with the camaraderie portrayed at the beginning of the film. It was not uncommon for British soldiers and sailors to spend all their money on drink and women at any opportunity - they didn't know when their time would be up. Civilians didn't understand their behaviour and thought badly of them. This film shows the German perspective but it's still a lot of young men doing their duty - elated, enthusiastic, worried, scared, and ultimately all too many dead because of someone else's politics. There is no way you can watch this film and believe that it is pro war.
Wenn ich nicht irre wollten die Amerikaner zu der Zeit das Thema ebenfalls aufgreifen und einen U-Boot Film drehen....dann kam "Das Boot" in die Kino's.....danach haben die Ami's es sein lassen.
Der beste deutsche Film....ein Haufen großartiger Schauspieler. Leider schon zu viele von uns gegangen....

I love this movie, my grandfather was a merchant marine, running supplies from the east coast to England the other in the army in Europe they both loved the movie as well If they were alive today and saw how the U.S. , European Union, and NATO stands for today, I’m sure they would be heartbroken. We live in clown world now. I don’t see it improving anytime time soon. The U.S. is falling apart and all we care about is Ukraine.

It's a great movie. I can't understand why in the eighties in Germany the audience could not understand the true story, could not see the glorious and true emotions when allied ships were sunk, in the perspective of four decades before. Were there at that time stil to much "Alte Kameraden" who stil experienced a true glorious feeling and were ashamed of it? Why do Germans always have trouble with there history as an fact. Their history consists of good things and bad things, There was J.S. Bach and there was Adolf Hitler, They've had Goethe and Der Kaiser, There was Willy Brandt and Walther Ulbricht. Why demolish "das Volkspalast der Demokratie" to build a replica of the imperial palace. When I was young, I was in the Dutch army as a sergeant of the engineers and when we hit a target during shooting practice of demolished a concrete slab with explosives we all felt aroused.
In the Strait of Gibraltar, where the boat is bombed and the diving planes get stuck, how is it that it can't surface by blowing the tanks, but later, after it touches bottom and there is further damage and repairs, and water is taken on and then expelled, it can surface?
Too much water inside. They had to pump it out first as shown in the film.
