It warms my heart and amazes me how he completely rocked that audience at a time when he was independent and the general public thought that he wasn't relevant anymore. It took a while for me to find New Power Soul album on the market after he passed and that record always has a way of coming back to rotation in my CD player.
At 5:42 Prince throws some slight shade at his band. "I'm not going to sing unless you get in key" he does in this in other live versions of this song.
The song is actually very, very technical and you can tell Prince wrote every instrument.

He was always taking to his band & people never noticed.
In defense of his band (and Prince too in fact), Mike scott changed up the key in his playing and P thought it was funky (he even said so)..and the band followed. But he couldn't sing the verse to it so they were going to need to go back to the "right" key. Not sure, it was a dig entirely, although he might have been a little annoyed Scott took the liberty, I don't think P was reflecting on their musicianship here though. That all being said, yeah, I have seen him call out people for missing cues and hitting clunker notes.
That's in the lyrics. If you listen to the remix single, he says that. It's a part of the bit.

I'm constantly in awe of Prince's voice. He was capable of _such_ range. And his live vocals were always impeccable.
I don't know how the hardcore fanbase views the _Newpower Soul_ album, but it'll always be one of my favourites, along with _Come_ . 💜

Frans Hattingh - I liked the album. I saw Prince during this era and it was good times.
One of his weakest (been a fan since 1988). Apparently even his engineer on it said it was one of his worst. And this song being a standout isn't a positive for it because with most Prince albums, ALL the songs are great. And you'd listen to them ALL again and again. I really cannot say that about this album. :/
yeah Prince albums can be patchy sometimes because he was so prolific . But oh those patches. Best ever at this rock/pop/soul thing
newpower soul was my first Prince album and will always cherish it.. It's dark, it's funky, it has newpower hornz. It's mr hayes, what's not to like... Great to put it in front of a night out
