You published a great book Tariq, I really enjoyed reading What I Believe and you're a really well rounder speaker.
Tariq Ramadan is such a great Man.
There is no quranic text about stoning!
@roder59 remark: both married men and women who commit adultery are stoned to death! and for them to be convicted, 4 witnesses must be there.
this makes stoning a harsh punishment, but the conditions to prove the adultery are also harsh.
btw, during the first 1000 years of Islam, stoning for adultery happened 4 times. and stoning is not new (it was first described in Judaic law)
conclusion: stoning for adultery is more a deterrent!

@spectrumnj The difference is that the West has gone through Reformations in religion, a Renaissance and an Enlightenment, Separation of church and state, and moreover an open discussion in society and jurisprudence about morals and manners, whereas Islamic societies are stuck and behaving more or less as in 7th century. That´s why we think stoning to death is barbaric!!

@spectrumnj Roughly AD800-1100 during the Abbasid Empire,intellectual and scientific activities(astronomy,philosophy,medicine)flourished in Bagdad as never before, muslim society was open to foreign ideas and influences.Unfortunately the scholar Hamid al-Ghazali(1058-1111)demolished this intellectual foundation and Islam hasn´t recovered since than.The West has experienced a cultural evolution(se below), still continuing, resulting in replacing religious barbarism by secular humanism.

@spectrumnj Tell me, what kind of democracy,do you think,are Tunisians,Egyptians and your fellow Moroccans worth? Western-style democracy based on universal human rights and women`s emancipation or (your sunni) Sharia-based "democracy", allowing chopping off limbs, stoning to death, beating wifes, nepotism, corruption etc? Choosing the latter makes you guilty of cynical postmodern culture relativism while living your comfortable life in the US. Should history and religion deny them decent lifes?
the view that each person has is derived from the personal circumstances that person lives: economic condition, social condition, spiritual condition, physical condition... so, my way of thinking is the combo of all these elements! and btw, islam is not only quran and hadith, there is a notion of interpretation called ijmaa (something fox news doesn't tell you about). and if you really claim that atheist world views are better, then i beg that you look at the atrocities caused by at least stalin
Where religion comes in, common sense, reason and philosophy is forced out. Sorry to say but in spite off all his knowledge of Western philosophy, with his "higher" islamic moral, Ramadan is practising Taqqiya and vague speech ad summum. He didn´t condemn stoning women (adulteresses) to death when challenged by Nicolas Sarkozy in debate.

no no no. chomsky covers many topics. i care less about corporate america. it doesn't change much in my life, although i own a company in america.
but what is wrong in criticizing corporate america? is global capitalism the solution to problems? i think capitalism doesn't work in every culture, nor does the american flavor of democracy. and that's the main position of chomsky and nader, mr smart!
@roder59 so basically, you want to define your own terms, and you want see other people's situations not as they are, but as you are. don't you see some sort of egoism in this?
and you are wrong when you say that Islamic societies are stuck in the 7th century. you are not making an effort in looking at the islamic world (there are 50 countries out there). your frame of reference is, as expected, pakistan, afghanistan, nigeria, and saudi arabia! don't forget the effect of colonization...!!!!!

@roder59 you're missing out in the history of Islam! you forgot the cultural impact on europe by muslims in andalousia, and you forgot the recent cultrual and intellectual effect the ottoman empire had on europe just a bit more than a century ago! when it comes to civilizations, none dominates forever. it's a wheel! art, poetry, and intellect still exist in the Muslim world. unfortunately, it has stalled for a bit due to colonization and emperialism from your fellow europeans!!! :)

@roder59 I will tell you something, and you'll probably won't believe me. I am Muslim, and I only learned about this "taqqiya" thing lately. You guys are making our religion easy. lol. No, there is no such thing as "Muslims are allowed to lie" unless their lives are threatened.
My other question to you is why does he have to condemn stoning women? and if you're argument is "because it's barbaric" then my following question would be "who defines what is barbaric from what is not?"
@roder59 i will conclude my conversation with you by saying: check the number of suicides in every western country, the number of divorces, the rate of cheating... once you do that and you're ready to discuss the reality, i'd be more than happy to discuss. other than that, i'm too good to exchange insults. salam!

Uff da. Another Islamic scholar stuck with having to defend the faith. I feel bad for each one of these guys that is stuck inside the indefensible. Tariq's goal (that I took away) was to help islamic immigrants fashion themselves in modern society... Yep, that's a challenge allright considering the backwards legal system, wife beating mandate, death for apostates, and slavery that Islam proclaims. Your challenge is formidable Tariq.

@roder59 you're missing out. the cycle of civilization. ups and downs. until the 16th century, nobody was able to practice any other religion than christianity in britain. ibn warraq does not have enough credibility to define a whole situation. there is no doubt that muslim countries, latin american countries, and african countries are stalling! for a huge reason: europeans raped them. and when you say "medieval islam," you may want to pick up an airplane and visit tunisia, turkey, morocco...

@roder59 edward said has nothing to do with islam. in fact he's not even a muslim! and his idea of orientalism is not limited to muslims. and you're using such silly arguments like "exactly like too many people of your faith." my faith exists all over the world. saying that thinking is based on faith makes you really ridiculous. that's why i am not ready to debate with such a person! just like schopenhauer said: you're either not learned, or you're lacking mental abilities.
When you say 'remove the bridges' I heard remove the British. Maybe I've heard better than you real words... ^^
