- Today is 25th Anniversary when Brandon Lee died on the Film set "The Crow" (1994), [He contributed to the uprising/"Created" WCW Sting's Crow Gimmick].

This debut took place on August 21, 1997 at Clash of the Champions XXXV in Nashville Municipal Auditorium (Nashville, Tennessee).

To everyone asking "WhY nOt A cRoW??" Well first, copyright issues. They had to tweak his gimmick because of copyright. You will notice because of the King Vulture instead of a crow, different face paint than in the movie, among other details.
He also changed the design of the facepaint because of the cover of Marilyn Manson on Rolling Stone magazine cover he saw on the newstands at a airport
He used the vulture b/c of it's size bud and it's massive wing span.
That's even more bad ass having a vulture instead of a crow.
Well, if you guys don’t remember….later on he DID use a grow, the vulture was only in early period of crow sting, the crow did come in later WCW years

That is one of the most underrated moments in the whole Sting/Hogan build... the commentators being dead silent, audio in the ring turned off, the mannerisms of everything involved.... that is beyond wrestling magic. That was art. Plain and simple.
Sting with the vulture up in the rafters will forever be instilled into my memory. 9 year old me, the little stinger I was, was so taken by the absolute spectacle of it. This is why I love wrestling.
Dude the way they executed this actually amazed me. Im not the biggest wrestling fan anymore and never really went back to watch any wcw, but this convinces me that wrestling will never be better than back then

Kevin Nash's reaction was priceless pretending like he was going to hit The Crow with the belt
It is the little impromptu moments like this that are lacking in wrestling now that MADE wrestling awesome back then. You can't script shit like that. Nash was just going with what felt right in the moment and he made sure he had the right angle for it. RIP Golden Age of Wrestling.

@@phenomz28 nash was completely improvising; they all were because the vulture was supposed to have a note from sting attached to his leg but it fell out and they couldn't find it. if you look closely starting a little after the 3:00 mark, you can see scott hall realize this after bischoff does too. So hall tries to pick up one of the flyers and then tear off a piece and discretely hand it to bischoff. Then bischoff walks over to the vulture and pretends like he grabbed it from him but then ultimately realizes it's gonna look fake, so everyone just stays silent and they go off the air. Bischoff talked about this on his 83 weeks podcast and he thought the segment was terrible, but i think they did a great job improvising and it did help with the mystique of sting.

@@darkwolf1202 I got the chance to see that piece of history from 1994 on RUclips and Netflix. Sting did great adaptation and elevated his legacy through the rest of the 90s until WCW was closed forever in early 2001.

This was so great when I first seen it. It added another layer to Sting's character. So glad Scott Hall came up with this idea. RIP Scott.
The stoicism of Sting made this phenomenal
Sting had a lot of different paint jobs as the crow, but this was my absolute favorite. The somber look to it reflected his heart just like the narration says; "When a man's heart is full of deceit."

I found the supposed true origins in an article of why 'The Crow' gimmick was so important to him on many levels:
"The Crow version of Sting worked on so many levels, because Sting was indeed becoming the character. He was in real life, living the gimmick. In real life, Steve Borden was miserable. He was living a life that was filled with prescription drugs, alcohol and women. Despite making more money than he knew what to do with, Steve Borden was never happy. You could see and feel the coldness in his eyes."

What a great time to be alive at the peak of WCWs success.
The punk pointing the laser at the bird could've screwed up this whole promo, but luckily the bird's talons were tied to Sting's falconry glove or this could've ended badly.

I still remember calling a local pro wrestling hotline on the phone one weekend and hearing that a character based on The Crow was going to debut in WCW. I thought it would be stupid, but Sting pulled it off.
Absolutely and utterly EPIC! 90s wrestling what a time to be alive. WCW was way way ahead of wwf during this time.
A trick of numbing the sound of the mic, the crowd and everything in the arena and focusing on that buzzing sound of Sting's introduction is what made this so epic. And then the bird reigning supreme. If me and my friends were scared shitless in 2006 when Taker was making his return then I can truly feel what kids in the 90s felt when Crow Sting debuted! This is timeless!

I was lucky enough to witness this moment even if only on TV. Aside from (obviously) Macho Man, Hogan and Ric Flair the Stinger was my personal favorite of the early WCW era, loved watching his fights alone or in tag team with Luger.
