I manage pro shops and have worked in the ice hockey industry for over 10 years. Skates are actually cut into a U shape, so 2 edges, not 1 like a knife. The best neck guards are actually very thin, but the material is cut resistant and they stretch almost sticking to the blade instead of slicing from the blade. The most effective neck guards are the ones built into the undershirt. They're the most comfortable, least obstructive, and also less likely to shift or move allowing a blade to get through anyway.
Also, lots of players get cut and actually some die nearly every year, only the professionals get the big media coverage though. It's actually a bigger problem than many think.

    • @2K9s

Getting cut in hockey from skate blades happens but is not a “bigger problem than many think.” Neck guards along with cut resistant fabric have come a long way in my nearly 40 years of skating and playing hockey. Injuries and getting hurt are going to happen but this incident was the perfect storm for tragedy.
*I’m not minimizing but rather trying to offer perspective.

@@2K9s It has such an easy solution though, no reason not to implement it. I have personally seen slit wrists, cut throat, and a slashed ankle all that needed emergency attention. I honestly don't know how the wrist guy lived, I swear their was more blood on the ice and benches than a person has in their body. It was spewing out like a movie.

I saw a teammate get hit on the side of his neck with a skate (he received 10 stitches and was ok) and that was enough to scare me enough to take neck/face protection seriously. The NHL mandated all players to wear visors/ eye protection in 2013 as part of the new CBA. Any players playing before that didn’t have to if they didn’t want to as they were grandfathered in. Today I wanna say there’s like 5-7 active players that don’t wear eye protection. So yes it is mandated for almost all players. I expect neck guards to be the same situation, where in the next few years it’ll be mandatory for all incoming players, and the players that are currently active don’t have to if they don’t want to, but it’ll be strongly encouraged

Saw the video and contact absolutely looked intentional as far as slowing him down. I’m not saying the skate to the neck was intentional, nor do I think he intended to kill Johnson, but you’re taught in hockey to never bring your skate anywhere near that far up, especially when falling. Sadly it had deadly consequences.

To jump to conclusions to say that Petgrave was trying to kill/seriously injure with a skate at that level of malice here isn't a reasonable assumption people should be making. Straight up tired of everything being a conspiracy theory to intentionally harm/kill people. His skate shouldn't have been that high but Acting like Petgrave was targeting the other player specifically at the neck is absurd, he might've thrown his leg up to try and interfere or physically disrupt the players motion but maybe instead of jumping to conclusions, the player should be interviewed and the people in and around the incident should be talked to about what they say before people throw out conspiracy theories. Don't wanna hear the argument about how Petgrave had high penalty minutes in that league either to try and say he wanted to murder the guy, its classic character assassination to try and paint him as morally dubious when people dont even know the man personally or talk to people who knew him.

They have two sharp edges about 1/8th of an inch apart. It is common for the edges to cut into skates, hockey socks, stick tape/stick blades. It is rare for skates to come up above the pant (which has a high denier shell). Even if the blades do come up and hit the relatively unprotected abdomen/just below the rib cage, the cuts are normally not all that deep.

I practice martial arts. For this kick to intentionally strike the neck of a man in motion would be a feat. For the kicker to have to focus on the play, the puck, the fact that he was just knocked out off balance would make an “intentional” accurate kick to the neck, missing padding and protection, an extremely low probability kick, and an absolute miracle.

My fear is that with kids not getting into hitting until ~16 it has the effect of them being a lot faster and stronger while trying to learn proper technique. What's crazy to me is there were NHL players playing without helmets up until the early to mid 90's. And in fact, the NHL repealed the mandatory helmet rule for a year or two in the 90's.
What's interesting is what an old time player said about helmets making the sport LESS safe. When there were no helmets, you would never see a stick come up high. But once helmets started becoming a thing, he started seeing way more high sticks. I'm paraphrasing what he said. I don't have the stats or know the numbers on puck injuries vs stick injuries, but I think it is quite interesting that you are just swapping out one risk for another risk.
Kind of reminds me of fighters who say bare knuckle fighting is actually less dangerous as most guy pull some punches so as to not injure their knuckles. In turn, guys getting hit arent getting hit as hard. But once the MMA gloves came in, you started getting more knockouts and more injuries as guys weren't holding bavk on their punches anymore.
What we have to remember is that these are contact sports. You can do everything to minimize injuries, but they will always happen. I personally think this was an intentional move to injure that resulted in a death and not so much just a 'freak accident'. But accidents do still happen.

Visors are mandated for new players in the NHL with new players. Non-visor wearing players must have played at least 25 games prior to 2013.
We saw the same thing when it came to helmets being mandated by the league (the last non-helmet wearing player was in 1997. Not as long ago as one may think). That rule was grandfathered in to the NHL.
I genuinely think we will get something in the off-season in the NHL that makes it mandatory for new players to wear neck guards. Grandfathered in like visors and helmets. What I think will be different in this adaptation from players is 1) the player didn’t survive this injury and 2) this player played with current NHLers that are still in the league today.
I get it may be pie in the sky thinking and maybe I’m wrong (I hope I’m not). I think it’s worth the investment but there is so much more to just implementing it.

  • @44hawk28

There's a difference between making contact with somebody's throat with your skate while flailing around in an incident. Such is the case with the one player that got struck in the throat by another of his own players. Here's the 12,000 lb gorilla in the room. I just watched that video of the incident that we're talking about. Player that hit him in the throat intentionally raised his foot at his head I don't think he intended to strike him in the throat but he intended to raise his foot to affect Adam Johnson. You don't believe me, I've been studying altercations both in Sports and physical attacks for a number of decades now. This was an intentional Act. He was looking at him as he raised his leg to place a dangerous object as the leading edge of his contact with Adam Johnson.
You don't need to add neck protection to anybody but the goaltenders, the goaltenders could use neck protection. But in the case where this man intentionally raised his leg to affect another player, he should be banned from hockey just for lifting his leg. The fact that he made contact he should be charged with second-degree murder. And he might get away with manslaughter.
Normally, I would never agree that law enforcement has any place in this or the courts have any place inside of a sporting game. But this is the most egregious contact from one player to another I have ever witnessed considering the leading contact was done with a clearly deadly part of his equipment.

Great video on a very tough situation. Neck guards seem like a pretty simple yet effective (data driven) way to reduce chances of catastrophic injuries. Hopefully some reasonable changes can be made as a result of this horrible event.
