In my earliest days as a Salvation Army Bandsman I had the great pleasure and privilege of being conducted by the then Captain Dean Goffin who also shared his testimony with us. What a wonderful soldier of Christ!

A wonderful tribute to a great composer and leader of musical groups. As a New Zealand Salvationist I have always held Commissioner Sir Dean Goffin in the highest regard - his composing remains of the highest quality and it was always a joy to play his music, technically demanding yet continues to speak and challenge every Christian musician.

Pure nostalgia from beginning to end. Commissioner Dean has left a legacy through his life and music that continues to bless.
I have memories of playing My Strength My Tower with Wellington Citadel Band and the NZ Symphony Orchestra at a centennial concert in Wellington.
And to have played under Dean on occasions as he spoke of and interpreted his compositions. We are the richer for knowing him.

My favourite S.Army composer of all time. The Road to Emmaus is an excellent portrayal of one of my favourite Bible events.
How good it is to hear the vocal version of My Strength, My Tower. Thank you for the many blessings

Dean Goffin in on my Mount Rushmore of SA composers. What depth and style. Limitless talent. And I believe that’s my brother in law Norman Bearcroft conducting. Hard to beat that!

I was a lad when Dean stayed for a short time with my family in Southend UK. He took several of our junior band practices and I recollect one March “Timaru Young People” which may have been one of his early compositions. The thrill for us youngsters to have the composer teach us his music - fantastic. He was also a lovely man. I am not sure why he stayed with us but I think it was about 1960-64 but cannot be sure. I would love to know why he may have been in the UK at that time. I am also told that he was an old friend of the Bartletts, NZ Salvation Army Officers way back in the 1950s. I am trying to trace them. Any ideas?
Deans music got better and better. And there has always been a high standard of musicianship in the Salvation Army.

Is anyone aware of the inspiration for Camp Akatarawa. Was that whilst he was in New Zealand? He took a funeral service in Auckland for a famous NZ band trainer and conductor Les Franics. We all arrived ready to play with our instruments, and there was not one note of brass band music

The inspiration came about when he was DC of Wellington Division and decided to reactivate the music camps that had been held regularly at the Army's camp in Akatarawa, for young people from all over NZ, but had lapsed. My privilege to be asked as a lowly Lieut. to be his camp manager for the week and bring my trombone to support the trom section. Dean thought the occasion was worthy of its own piece of music, hence the title of the march "Camp Akatarawa". And the band performed a worthy rendition of it at the concert held to conclude the music camp.
