Great guitar! Thanks for playing it on the Custom Short History Steve!
Thank you Keith! Really appreciate you having me on board
Looks like a ltd edition 25/50 ,the other guitarist in my band has one .79/80 is the correct time frame too
Very similar!
That guitar looks good on you. You should get another one.
Let me know if you find one!
It’s a stunner. It even has its own sound.
By the way, the fretboard has “split parallelograms”
Looking at how much bad vintage Gibson guitars sell for, this far superior example will never lose your money. We all dream of finding a special guitar…
Thanks so much! What'd I say split block? 😅 sometimes when the cameras rolling I can't do words good.... really appreciate you checking it out! Im glad i found my dream guitar and hope you get to as well!
@@SteveSterlacci my apologies, I thought you said split logo. Split block sounds right. One of my favourite looks for a Les Paul. Cheers.
They have Neal Schons guitar at the Rock n Roll hall of fame in Cleveland Ohio. Weird thing is that they have it listed as a 2007 Les Paul Super Custom. Can send you the pictures if you'd like to see them.
They have done a few reissues over the years. From what I've heard, his original was stolen in the 90s (from Neal himself in a FB comment when I asked about it)
Seen the guitar(Les Paul Super custom) Neil played on the "Anyway you Want it" video.
Crazy I watched @Five Watt World video and then this came on my suggested right after! Keith does awesome work, and you played great in that video! This guitar is sick, I have a Norlin era custom (85 LPC in Charcoal Metallic). So is this kinda then like one of the earliest "Supremes". I'm trying to think of the closest thing Gibson made to this at the time and only other thing that comes to mind is THE Les Paul, cuz of the flamed maple back and sides, but obviously missing the other fancy appointments those things got. Whatever it is it's sick man, congrats!
Gibson doesn't know about much anymore before 2010, since the floods, when they lost all their original records. I have the only Les Paul to ever come out of the factory with carbon fiber reinforcement in the neck. It's a 93 and they have absolutely no idea it even exists... But I even know the builder (who has become tour manager of a major country act, and verified that he made it when he worked in the custom shop and is the only verification of its' existence other than the original reciept.)
Very cool! Where is your carbon fiber enforcement? If there are no records, how do you know yours is the only one?! 🙃
If I was in a position to buy a high-end LP that wasn't an R series re-issue,or ordering a true Custom Shop,it would look pretty much like this....;-)
I would love to see it if you got it!
Steve although not near as valuable as yours I had an Epiphone custom just like that in the early 2000s. I've also got a 1970 gold top Gibson les paul Deluxe.
Very cool!
In 1979 I purchased a Les Paul Custom brand new for $799.00 and it came with the "chainsaw" case. It's an ugly beast that weighs 12lbs but plays like a dream. The expression, "a face only a mother could love" applies here. It has a 3 piece maple top with absolutely no esthetic value. Laminated maple neck with volute and Ebony fret board. If you paid double of what I paid then yes, it was certainly a steal! You own a true beauty.
I also have a 1980 LP Artisan. My Artisan came with the "Micro-tuner" type stop and you're right, I've never ever had the need to use it.
A lot of Norlin era instruments sucked but there were a few gems. (very few) Congrats on yours!
Thanks! Ive got 2 Norlins I consider my favorite guitars. Many bad, but many good.
maybe imcrazy im imagining it but wow it threw me back to when i was a kid a played my first lp custom. the sound the full sound was just amazing.my first guitar was a strat then i got a lp and wow once again this video threw me back to 1980
That's so cool Carlos! Thanks for sharing and I am glad to have jogged the memory
Did you ever hear the story of “ Jonny Lee the unwise giving away a 59 “ ? . 😅
Brutal!
Absolutly gorgeous guitar brother new subscriber after stumbling across this video
Thanks Lonnie! Means a lot having you here. Hope you enjoy the content
I use my TP-6 tuners all the time. I’ve got them on all my Les Pauls. Love them. And they look badass to boot. I started using them initially because most of my guitars have Floyd’s on them. So I’m used to tuning at the bridge. Very cool guitar. 🤘🏻
Ah! I never thought of that. Makes perfect sense for floyd users. Thanks for checking it out 🤘
I freakin love the super 400 split parallelogram fret inlays…that is a sweet guitar…my guess for the neck wood, would be walnut…but I’m an idiot!!!
Mark Agnesi might know something about it…
Hes seen it 😄
Ok, first things first about this guitar. I think you might need to talk to a guy named, John Ostronomy. You & I are friends on Bookface and he’s on my friends list there. Anyway he’s Ace Frehley’s right hand guy, or works with Ace or something like that. Anyway many moons ago as a kid I remember seeing Ace with a Les Paul with that sort of flame too. The reason it stands out to me is because in that same time period, also in the same group of pictures Ace was holding the guitar up and I could see the back of it. The guitar had the same flame back! Now here’s the twist on it, I never saw him with it any other time. It was only in one set of pictures & it was during the time Peter left and Eric Carr was brought into the band. Why does it matter? Well because Ace’s LP in those pictures may have been made from that same batch of wood! Why does John O matter? Well because he documented most of Ace’s gear and may know something or Ace may even know something about the guitar. I only saw like 4 pictures of Ace with that kind of wood on that guitar. That was in ‘79-‘80. It was built like a Standard & definitely wasn’t a Super Custom. It wasn’t one of his triple pickup guitars either. I know there were models given to him that he got rid of quick if he didn’t like them. He may not have been a fan of the wiring or something simple and just ditched it. He made it know that he wasn’t good with keeping guitars at a few points during that time.
I had a story about my Dean guitar but I feel like passing along my info is more important to help get you answers.
Really amazing story and find! Your video caught my eye because I had a 1971 cherry sunburst Custom I bought used but not highly figured as yours is of course. Back in the 1970’s I was always in my favorite superstore in New Jersey (I live in Pennsylvania) looking for Gibson’s and Fender’s and saw an Gibson Artisan (based off a Les Paul Custom) which was also very different. Had 3 pickups on it.
The TP-6 was a godsend for my 69 LP Custom back in the day before Tusq nuts and nut greases. Much more dependable "fine" tuning, easier to make small adjustments while playing w/o having to reach across to the headstock. I even installed a knock-off one on my Firefly 338 (which I bought on YOUR recommendation - good call!). And it makes string changes so easy. Just lift it out!
I’ve got them on all my Les Pauls. You’re right about the string changes. Really simple. And I truly believe the tuning stability is second to none. I do use Tw-25b on the nut slots. It’s a military gun grease that comes in a needle point syringe. Perfect for nut slots and even saddles. I discovered by accident really. I was out of my regular guitar nut lube. And I asked a buddy (he’s a gun collector) if he had anything. He threw me a tube of this Tw25b and I haven’t used anything else since.
I gotta say, That is one gorgeous, stand alone LP!
I love it!!
What is the difference between a budget guitar like your chibson and this one, as far as feel goes, if you close your eyes could you tell a real Gibson from a budget les paul,if the budget has a pickup upgrade of course, this Gibson sounds amazing.
Its definitely a tough subject to tackle. Many can argue the law of diminishing returns. I can sound exactly like myself on a budget guitar as well as a high end guitar. What it comes down to is personal taste and feel based on individual instruments. My 2 budget guitars happen to be incredible players. So are my high end ones. I have played bad and good at both ends of the spectrum. I think how you bond with the piece of wood in front of you is most important!
@@SteveSterlacci I guess I'm trying to talk myself into getting a chibson, that relic LP with the nitro finish sounds like it would be one cool guitar, that you don't have to worry about banging up, I've gigged with squires and I see no reason not to take one of, these out on the road,, I've never even held a real les paul so I'm wondering just how close do they feel in comparison, it would take years for me to save enough to buy one, when I can get fake in a couple of weeks, you pretty much sold me on that guitar, definitely going to get one, either one like yours or the R9 Jimmy page model.
@2Daze Take its definitely a good option on a budget if you really want a tribute piece or something that has a Gibson logo. There are also many great lower priced options. My fake one needed a bunch of upgrades as you've seen. Depends on your budget too. Orville, tokai, edwards are all Japanese LP copies that are great as well for around 1k
Maybe Joe Bonamassa can fill in the blanks if you can ask him?
It's almost the same guitar as my Les Paul 25/50 Anniversary, they were made the same time, the only difference, the Anniversary had a mini switch and 25/50 inlays on the headstock, many pictures to find on the internet
Very similar! The back and sides would be different too
That’s a work of art… I was gifted a sunburst 2001 Gibson LP Custom 68 and for a long time I didn’t know what to do with it being a Fender guy. Fast forward 8 years and I day dream about the tones I get from this that no other guitar could produce.
WOW that is some gift! Those 68s are amazing indeed. Glad you got to appreciate it !
I use the TP6 on my 1981 Custom. It works great and I use it all the time for fine tuning.
Nice! I thought it was just for show 🤣😅
That’s a real nice guitar and great story on it Brother!
I have four gibsons and that's one bad M Fker
Now that is a real beauty of an LP. Take good care of it (as I'm sure you will)!
Thanks Jim!
That would be Ebony strips in the neck there my friend. Gorgeous!
I would think it would be as well! Its really hard to tell since only that tiny area is exposed
Congrats on being featured on Five Watt World with your beautiful guitar! 😎
Aloha there Sir Picksalot, I remember your name from a video regarding the Rick Beato signature model. I'm the one who asked if you had to scrape off excess dried Nitro from between the neck binding and neck. I needed to do that in order to smooth out the surface. Other than that issue I love the instrument! I heard Gibson will be making another batch being the first was so successful.
Nice intro on the 5 Watt World video. And that is one fine looking guitar.
Thanks so much Sean!
Clean neck pup rules, so articulate- even a bit of quack. Trogly has a guy, Randy Leonard, I think still has ledgers and stuff from working at Gibson. Saw 5WW and the bit with Keith, I had to sub to another LP freak. Love that: they are scrambling to get low number Greenies and fighting over real or fake Snakepits, you just play the hell out of it - bringing joy to yourself, listeners, and not the bankers. 😈
Awesome story. Perhaps you can somehow catch Neil Schon’s ear to see if he has any knowledge as well. Interesting to think there may be about 20 more floating around out there unaccounted for.
Thanks! I got his attention in a facebook comment... his was stolen in the 90s . Thats really all i got out of him lol
@@SteveSterlacci Well dang it! ha. It’s great you made this video. Could help shed light tomorrow or in 10 years as people continue to watch it. Absolutely sick flame on there and I love how you put the period correct bridge on.
Those late 70s early 80s customs were about the same price as new customs back in 2010 when i got mine. Great guitars. I have an 81. The dude from turbonegro plays a 79 cherry custom as well
It’s walnut on the neck. That’s the classic five piece Gibson neck. 3 pieces Maple with two walnut stripes
It could be! I just took a bunch of closeups to blow up and see. I honestly never gave it any thought. Ill send you the pics if u wanna see. Just hit me on any socials
Saw it on Keith’s video like 1 day ago, really great sounds especially when using no pick with neck pickup. Aside from the triangle, is there any mahogany in the middle of this guitar ?
Beautiful guitar
Thanks John!
What a beauty!!
Thanks!
Shes a beauty alright!
One of the nicest Les Pauls I've seen. Seriously love that guitar. Happy for your Steve. I love that you play it and changed it to suit what you were looking for and did not make her a case queen.
Wow! That is one beautiful guitar! I can imagine that it must have been kinda weak in design before you made the changes. You have done a great job with the modding! So many details and I totally love the side and back of the neck, and I can imagine that it will look great when playing on it! The base and sides with the added stop looks amazing! Couldn't see the stop until you zoomed in because it looked like a reflection from the light when viewed from distance. And of course just like a Les Paul does, it sounds great! ❤️ Great video Steve! 😊
Great story, thanks for sharing. Greco made a model similar with those fretboard inlays. True 70's vibe!
COOL guitar
Same tailpiece as my artisan
Nice! Those are amazing guitars
@@SteveSterlacci dude I'm 48 and have owned it since I was 13 lol.. my dad got it for 300 bucks from a college kid lol.. its 13 pounds of awesome lol..
@@SteveSterlacci currently looking at a 3 pick up black beauty artisan ..
.... looks great... but I don t like the knobs
They told me they don't like you either.
Trogly is sweating right now. "I don't have this Les Paul, am I gonna survive?"
🤣🤣🤣 he is aware of it and has my info. He was supposedly buying one at one point but I guess it fell through. I paid to send him an email on his site. Answered and mentioned he was about to get one. Hasnt contacted me since though.
@@SteveSterlacci I love guitars with a story. Thanks for the video!
Trogly already did 3 videos about this guitar ruclips.net/video/SCy9vSYVMHI/видео.html

@Poptopunderdog me too! thanks for watching and commenting. The support means a lot. Hope to see you on other vids soon 🤘🤘🤘
Wow! What an amazing story.
Thanks JM!
you're going to sleep on the couch if Jenn this this 😀
You should let Trogly document this piece of history. Great video.
I had paid $15 to send him an email for an appraisal. He didnt seem too interested outside of a quick glance and the appraisal
@@SteveSterlacci He did a review of a very similar 1980 version of your guitar here: ruclips.net/video/SCy9vSYVMHI/видео.html
@Alan Lighton yep! His seemed to be a "III" so i guess the third version? Great video!
Trogly did an episode about this guitar 3 years ago. ruclips.net/video/SCy9vSYVMHI/видео.html
Those are split blocks not split parallelograms. 😀
Glad you found something worth commenting on
I pointing out something about your guitar. You requested more info on the guitar. Well, part of that info is that they are Split Blocks from the Super 400 Gibson. All I was doing was trying to help.
I appreciate it very much! The way I interpret that is you are correcting me for saying the wrong word lol we are cool though, no worries! Im glad you checked out the video and commented!
The Top is Amazing, the 3 piece neck looks fantastic.. The Whole guitar is maple?
Maple over mahogany! Weights 11.3 lbs 😅
bro. austin covers these. there's a solid body version... the stringers are walnut
If you're talking about trogly, i mention that in the video about halfway through
@@SteveSterlacci I noticed that... I watched the video. He covers these to the point of explaining things about the plug and the stringers etc.
@David Murray Holland yeah! He makes great content. Ive seen his super custom videos. I dont believe hes ever had one of this exact run of 79s, but he sure has had some similar ones. I actually have been in contact with him just asking some questions about this guitar. He mentioned he was working a deal to get one, but i guess it didnt happen. I'll send some close ups of the part ive worn off the neck if u wanna see the black strips in a better photo. Just hit me on any social media
@@SteveSterlacci you got a heck of killer guitar. I'd be interested in Austin doing a feature on this guitar
Thanks man! Would be cool if he would be interested. I dont think he was, based on our emails. But, my doors open if he ever wants to !
It's beautiful, but way too damn heavy!!!!! LOL
My dad warned me about women like that...
@@SteveSterlacci Lololol
Looks like a supreme to me.
Shares a few features for sure!
