The morals come from the elders within the community like their grandparents. It is worth pointing out that all travellers have shorter lifespans than the settled population. Morals to them are also their cultural code. They also don't watch much popular culture like TV shows and films as well as only have basic primary education. The young marriage age is how they keep their money within families still. The girls dress like that to stick out among the other girls. They have to get the boys attention by how they look in the hope he will come over to them and 'garb' them. They don't have sex before marriage in traveller culture. So they have to find ways of self-advertising themselves to other young travellers in the marriage market. Hence why the boys have their tops off and the girls have bright colourful clothes.

These girls we're 15 year's old and she'd teach them basic English and Maths. They couldn't even read I found it so upsetting to watch they we're literally struggling to read books what my daughters could read at the age of 4 year's old. They were basically taught to just cook and clean make sure you're husband is happy, some of bride's were as young as 16 year's old. If they marry a non Gypsy man and go to live in a house, they are disowned by the whole Gypsy community and are not welcome back. 😢

If not he can try to steal it from her and it might be successful or it might not be successful. In either way it doesn't mean anything if she didn't give it willingly.

Although the grabbing wasn't part of it, 50 years ago women got married and were housewives and mothers.

Yes and died younger than today! Plus men were actual men they didn’t run off or screw around. If they did they were rejected by everyone. Women should have skills to fend for themselves if needed. Husbands leave, become disabled, or die.

The messed up thing? I was such a social misfit as a girl that I'd have been shattered NOT to be grabbed had I been in that situation - although my self esteem would've been expecting a total rejection walking in.
And then horribly confused if a guy did grab me. "ME?! Really? Wait. What's wrong with you? Why would you pick ME? Weirdo."
I actually panicked and bit the first boy who dared to steal a kiss. Broke another guy's finger. Now that I think about it, I don't know how the hell I managed to get married. My husband had to get through a lot of barriers.

As someone who is experienced both sexual assault and domestic violence both as a child and with my ex-husband, this just turns my stomach. Shockingly and sadly it is not that far off from the kind of stuff that happened to my friends and I growing up in New Jersey in the late eighties and nineties. We were always told to be nice to the boy who would pull our hair, twist our arm, or tickle torture us to screaming and in a few cases peeing without consent. It was the whole oh they just like you they don't mean it, and this is the way they express it . And we were a middle-class to working poor Northern New Jersey suburb. We have our 30 year class reunion next month, and as an organizer I've kept in touch with a lot of my classmates. It is definitely sad to see how many single mothers are raising their kids on their own because of divorce etcetera. But what is even more disturbing is how many are still in marriages and Partnerships that are based on domestic violence. We were in New Jersey suburb where the majority of us were catholic and brought up from childhood the divorce was not okay, even if there was some sort of violence involved. This leading part to my own mother passing away at the relatively young age of 67 in 2009, abused by my father pretty much all of their marriage and whose body had taken one too many beatings. If I did not Escape my marriage after my ex-husband of 6 years kick me down the stairs while I was in my first trimester and miscarried my child because of it, I would have probably ended up the same way.

They dress like literal prostitutes. Most parents in normal society would not let their daughters leave the house looking like that and wouldn't buy them such trashy clothing. Young ladies can look nice and attractive (to guys that they are trying to attract) without being trashy. I don't like the other extreme either which is be covered from head to toe in drab boring attire but there is definitely a middle ground with attire. I haven't seen not one gypsy guy with a nice personality and good looks that these girls should want to attract. Smh.

About 8 years ago I was out in a club with my friends, none of us being travellers or anything and this grabbing literally happened to my friend because they thought she was a gypsy girl. Unbelievable, she got away and is ok but this is literally assault and anyone who says this is just their culture, imagine if this happened to your daughter, your sister, your friend or even you and you wasn’t even part of the community… absolutely not ok!!!
