Your channel got me into deep squats and crawling and hanging. I can move now like you did in this video and it feels so good. Thank you! Also, I'm 50 but I feel 25. I can outlast and out stretch everyone I know. I keep getting excited and encouraging people to move, get outside and move. I've always been active but the lessons I've learned here are amazing!!!
At 59 I had knee issues. Getting up from the floor and stairs was tough. I gradually worked my way down to a 6 inch squat depth after doing partial reps for months. The partials still seemed to not help (maybe even hurt my knees) but full ROM ATG actually fixed my knees and now at age 66 I can do ATG goblet squats with over half my body weight. Zero knee issues!
I was lucky enough to be able to purchase a home finally in my late 40's five years ago. Since then I have been weeding my yard by squat walking. It started out painful, within a year it was doable and now it's enjoyable. Squatty Potties are a rad thing as well.

70 year old with Parkinson’s Disease. I am grateful that I found your channel. I am now able to do the Asian squat for 2 minutes. Working toward 3 minutes. Thanks for taking the time to share this content.
I had a neighbour, he lived till he was 94 year old, he would spend a lot of time in squat position troughg the day, he would do squat position and do the work with his hands around flowers, herbs, plants ans even just randomly do squat to rest and talk with us. And he was also very active, he would ride bike for miles every day to go to buy newspaper, go to market, etc...
i knew of a guy in england, drank one beer and had one cigarette a day , every day, didnt squat, and lived till 108, washed cars in his 90s and was used to train new people, who couldnt keep up with him.
My dad was a basketball coach for years. He believed that doing squats everyday to build your full range of motion and jumping ability was the most important exercise a man could do. He must have said, "10 squats a day to walk everyday for life." thousands of times. As sick of it as I was, I stuck to it and at 56 years old now, I still do my squats every morning and while I no longer can dunk, I can still touch the rim. On a side note: squats keep your butt and hamstrings from flattening out as you age which are the first two things to go for most men.
Years ago, I went into a pilates class for the first time. After my evaluation, the instructor asked me if I did ballet as a child (I could put my leg above my head but couldn't squat for the life of me) She said it was very common for adults that danced ballet as children to have hips flexibility and no ankle mobility. We try to work on that for about 2 years, but I never see the diference. 15 years laters, your videos found me on RUclips and after 2 months of some very basic exercises, I'm staring to see a difference. I'm 40 now, I've always workout, I still dance, I still do yoga (but no more pilates) and just NOW I'm understanding what it takes to work on my ankle mobility. Finally! Thank you!
interesting, because I think ballet does require tension in the ankles and feet right? whereas the focus especially in the deep resting squats is all about relaxation.

that's correct but if your squatting or deadlifting heavy weight you better have perfect alignment when doing it. if not you can seriously mess yourself up.
@korcidiamond3623 no there is a proper lifting method and if you want to reduce the likelihood of injuries then you better use it. Your rebuttal was incorrect at best and dangerous for new lifters at worse.

I only did 4 years and yeah I got issues. Being a mortarman carrying that baseplate up and down hills. I wanted to reinlist but there were no chiropractors nearby Pendleton. I think if I had a decent chiropractor I could have stayed in the Infantry (no other place to be in my book), I could have done my 20 and got out ok. But I do have mild scoliosis that didn't show up until i started doing weekly/ monthly 20-30 mile "humps" (hikes) after just 4 years. They should have a good Chiro on every base.
I lived in Japan for two years while stationed at Misawa AB; all the education I needed about squatting for longevity. It was a rural area, and every day you would see so-called elderly folks working the fields in a full squat - a position the average American (regardless of age) couldn't attain without a lot of effort, and maybe couldn't recover from. Also saw a fair share of traditional porcelain hole-in-the-ground toilets that required a full squat to use; traditional Japanese dining tables that were maybe a foot off the ground where meals were served ... a lifestyle that required mobility. Worth following.
Squat is important , but there is also reasons why we move pass the squat. Being able to squat is extremely important and it will make the heart stronger. Once the body could squat , it is not necessary to squat frequently to retain it.
@@test123497 Actually there is still reason why to squat often for modern people , to simply just exercise more often is a good reason. But squatting on the street , now that's a thing to reconsider. Mistaking laziness as healthy habits , it's a different matter. For people who often squat , it is also a good resting position.
I always thought someone should design a SIT/STAND/SQUAT desk. Doing deep squats daily as drastically improved the health of my ankles, knees, hips and back.
I had bad knees at 50 and since then I’ve been knees over toes all the time … and - my knees now? PERFECT! I deep squat all the time and the mobility it provided opened my mind on how I should train going forward. Now at 53 I’m feeling like I’m in my 30’s. Aging is truly a sitting disease 💪🏼
My question is, if this deep squat hurts my arthritic knees should I do it anyway? Will my knees get used to it? I’m assuming if I’m not pounding on my knees I’m not doing damage. Ahh he just said if I feel pain talk to a medical professional. I guess it’s not for me😢
As an old duffer of 57 who's had a career as a desk jockey, I've started your squats, I started in our home hot tub as it takes some weight off and easy to balance. I've found it a good start and it's helping. Now to "on land" squats.
@davevisse, lol, young man. I'm 72, so yeah, from my perspective you are young. I've spent time in Asia and am well aware of the squat (many other commenters have had similar experiences seeing it). My wife is Asian and she uses this position for many gardening tasks and sometimes she sits on the sofa in a squat. I learned it while serving in Korea (44 years ago). I prefer it over using knee pads for a host of tasks. For example, I clean my pool skimmer while in a squat and assemble furniture as well. I also do it as part of my strength training regimen. BTW my knees are great and my balance is good. My wife, who is 65, can balance on a bathtub edge in the squat. However, if you don't have experience with this squat, don't try it on a bathtub. Lol, the bathtub is not a place to do it if you have grown up in a Western culture but if really young and if in good shape, or grown up in an acrobatic family, then give it a try.
@@chrisw5509 Great comments....and thank you for your service! I've been regularly doing the "squats" and I am improving. Both in flexibility and in balance. My biggest fitness issue currently, is the guys I play tennis with like to drink beer following our exercise! LOL....but I am going with Ben Franklin on this one....Beer is proof God exists. Cheers....and keep up the good life!
I've been loving reclaiming ATG squats over the past few years and I'm currently 63! Working this movement has been teaching me progressively more and more about how my body works and paving the way for variations on it!
I love the resting squat. I learned it in southeast Aisa and found it healthier for bowel release, low back pain relieve and keeping the legs and ankles flexible. Well done, thank you for sharing this education!
As a sedentary person in their 70s, with stiff hips and weak knees, I really appreciate your options for easing into squats. Maybe one day, I’ll be able to get up out of a squat without assistance 😊
Squats have healed my lower back pain that extended all the way to my knees, no amount of visits to physio (over 50 times to several different ones) have worked (neither their exercises) for many years. I've found out squatting myself few years ago, still do them daily, no more back- and kneepain, but it will come back when I don't do them for a few days. Results came quick as well, after a week far less pain and it takes longer before it came back. Doing it for 6 months, pain coming back after few hours extended to a day, few years, extended pain not doing them to few days. Hope this anecdotal experience helps others, truthful video!
Absolutely amazing video, your strength and mobility is mind blowing. I am 64 and just started the Asian Squat a year or 2 ago, and could only do 20 to 30 secs at first. I just did it for 5 mins watching this video. Thank you so much for sharing this !
this squat resting pose was common in Japanese till recently. We used to find many sitting in fromt of convenient stores usually anti social young kids.Being 56, I do find time whenever can do this squat position any time of day. Thanks for the video! Keep it up!
Great video! When I work my office job from home I use a standing desk - but on the floor! It's a Stag and Bear and I love it. It's really made for putting on top of your regular desk so you can stand and work, but I use it directly on the floor and sit on a yoga cushion. Sometimes squatting, but most of the time just moving through different stretches. It really helps the pain I usually get from sitting at a desk all day.
You are a true inspiration. Your videos have motivated me to push past my fears and regain my strength. As someone who has suffered from arthritis in my entire lower body area for years, I had been afraid to move. But after watching your content, I found the strength and motivation to get going. Thank you for your contribution to my newly acquired strength and health. It truly means a lot.👑💜👑🙌🏾💪🏾🙏🏾🌞🥰🤗
F46 here, coming out of longcovid, entering perimenopause, newly diagnosed adhd.... Exercise is such a fantastic "drug" for everything, I'm so ready to build strenght and mobility and have my athletic self reactivated. This was gentle and highly motivating ❤
Another thing that will help you live a healthy long life is HRT. There is lots of great scientific backed on RUclips by Dr. Mary Claire Haver, Dr. Louise Newson, Dr. Lisa Mosconi.
It's been a pleasure to watch your videos! I'm 31yo guy who has always suffered from not being able to lift heavy weights because it always end up to some kind of mild injury which takes me out of gym for a while (not really a technique issue, but other health problems) It's been a long journey for me to accept that my body is not made for that. Nowadays I enjoy much more gentle type of excercise and have actually got inspired to do contemporary dancing which is superb for movement training. Thank you for being part of my mental journey for healthier ways to move!
I was “blessed” with an abundance on top. Consequently I couldn’t bend at my back to reach low things because the back pain. This made me a pro squatter! I’m so grateful for that! I did have reduction surgery. now I can run! I love being able to squat well. I use it in my job all day as a Paratransit driver. My knees are killer and I’m 50! Thanks for this video
I’ve always wore flat shoes…then I got arched shoes to help prevent damage. But now my sciatic nerve has gotten hurt. Am I to blame my attempts of preventing damage for my damage? That’s irony if I’ve ever heard it
This makes so much sense. The number one problem for Americans and Europeans in our monastery was the inability to sit cross legged for long periods because they would have back pain. Though sitting for more than an hour cross-legged in difficult and even Asians squiggle and move to adjust themselves, it is something that made yoga and meditation easier for Asians. This is simply because there is no other position in which you can stay alert and comfortable for long hours and all the everyday squating and sitting of regular Asian life makes it not first time activity to sit cross legged. In fact I remember people from villages would have an even easier time than people from cities because people in cities use Western Toilets and Chairs half of the day at work.
ive been gyming but avoiding squats for 15 years, started to squat 2 years ago and 6 months ago deep squats, my mobility has gone up insane levels, my shoulders, chest muscles packed on new muscle mass ( i guess from the testorerone) and i realized how locked my ankles and hips were and unlocking them with each squat session feels amazing. DO SQUATS guys
Excellent information thank you so much,, I’ve been doing the resting squat for about a year now to a 15 minute meditation that I used to do standing up! I’ve been doing that meditation for 20 years so now I’m sure for the next 20 years I will be doing my resting squat every morning for at least 15 minutes! Life is good
when i moved to japan i was amazed at japanese abilities to sit on the floor and everyone could deep squat. i can now do both just like them after a lot of practice
I had bad knee pain when I started motorcycling again 2 years ago, but after squatting and doing leg days, it went away. Turns out, my leg muscles just needed to wake up again! What people forget is the Knee is mostly a joint/bone. The Muscles around the knee are what causes soreness, so if those start to Atrophy, that's where the actual pain comes from.
I love this video. I am currently healing my plantar fascia (heel injury in both feet), a condition that my poor ankle flexibility contributed to (or maybe caused). With my ankle rigidity I can't squat to save my life, but I see how important this movement is. I'm going to add "learn how to squat properly" to my list of fitness goals. I'll have to go slow while my PF is still a problem but increasing my ankle flexibility will serve both to facilitate healing and squatting, and it feels good to have another goal besides just healing from injury. Thanks for making this vid.
Wow what an incredible journey that you have made for you and for us.grateful to you for these 3 months and feeling really overwhelmed 😢that it is over.hats off to u encouraging us to do what is best for us and I have to say this journey was the first time I could complete this 12week program complete of course the modifications that made me do this.😢 I really find myself feeling stronger and mobile with all the pains in my body to complete at the age of 55.thank u so much Heather.❤
Ya I get that too. Im finding out it's the pinching or butt wink on my lower back. But this might be because of my stuff ankles When I sit on my toes I eliminate the syncope by keeping a straight back. It might be because I can breathe more deeply.
My Korean mother raised us half-asian girls with floor squats. I remember her making kimchi in this huge metal pot on the floor in what we dubbed the "kimchi squat". Even at 65 years old, this lady is still as flexible as she can be. It's TOTALLY healthy for you and your soul.
I found the squat position (more precisely, squatting and hugging my knees close to my chest) to be the best stretch exercise for my lower back. Almost completely eliminated my lower back pain from sitting.
I am 60+ woman who's had a thigh injury. medical professional struggled to [really] be helpful, but I found stretching (among other things). recently I started squatting - and it's the best. Now seeing this video, I feel on the right track. Thanks! loved the video, going to sub and watch your other vids.
This is hugely true. I was struggling with waist pain for many months. Then I realized my waist pain was caused by stress on my waist and hip. I started: squads like sit-down, dumble swing, and deatlift. I couldn't imagine fixing the Beck pain problem. The video also justifies my comment; thank you!💪💪💪💪💪💪💪💪
Also at 59 I had knee issues which I was able to completely fix by going ATG to a 6 inch depth. Had to train for it going lower over time. Beats the hell out of surgery! Awesome vid as always. You rock.
That's awesome! I had started mobility training here before I dislocated my knee in Nov. It has been extremely difficult the last 4 months but this month I'm back all the way and then some in my deep squat. Anyway, I say all that in commiseration. Congratulations on no surgery!
Lifting is stretching with load. As a long time squatter my PCP and my men’s doctor says that squatting most likely has had an impact on my testosterone being more elevated than 92% of men my age.
My Gran is in her 60s & does these low squats every day without a second thought, moving across the floor with a dustpan & brush as she sweeps up, then does the same movements for hours weeding the garden. She's always on her feet & says if you sit down for more than 30 mins after the age of 50, you'll never get up again!
I kept falling backwards due to my Stiff Ankles (Did not know that until now). Glad to have found this video, putting something below my heels helped a lot!!
I am 68 years old and about 6 months ago, I happened to see a video about the benefits of squats, so I decided I would try to do some. At first, I couldn't even do a 'proper' squat but I persevered slowly and now I can do a resting deep squat for 5 minutes and find it easy to do multiple squats. I deep squat while I am cleaning my teeth and each time I come down the stairs at home, I squat down on the step behind me. Loved this video.
I've watched that whole video while squatting on my low yoga blocks :) Amazing video as always! I got my first Vivos in 2020 and in the last 2 years I completely transitioned to 100% barefoot shoes, it was the best decision ever! Awesome you're partnering with them :)
I agree. I have lower back pain and a pinch nerve though and this has caused me a lot of leg pain. The' "specialists" have worked on me for over a year. I have had test, injections, meds, acupuncture, myofasical treatments and seen a chiropractor. I have a long history or fitness and working out,. Injuries and illness have set me back since 2020. I love your programs and just turned 71. I still have hope that I can reboot and get back at least some of the mobility and muscle I lost.
That’s an Excelent video. You are very knowledgeable. Can you please make a video about vertebrae, coexistence and spine alignment. I live in the mountains as a lumberjack. I don’t have chiropractors around I have to self align myself all the time. Must get the job done. It would be absolutely great if you can make a video of spine alignment exercises.. thanks ahead … please do it!!
I started drinking my first coffee this way, the first year was responsibly uncomfortable..my feet would even tingle .. BUT now 5 years later I am down here (currently having a coffee) for up to 20minutes a morning!
This one pretty much touched on everything I've been going through since I started my journey in August 2023. Unfortunately I'm currently the guy who went to hard and is experiencing painful tightness on both legs just above my knees. Currently taking it easy with some rehab. 312 plus pounds at the beginning of August and currently 227.
what's wrong with her? don't you think she'd benefit greatly from doing some squats herself? bullies are not always just the maes, sounds like you found a female version.
I hate this " consult a medical professional" so much. Whenever I go to our medical professionals they always wait for me to be dead to say that im not fine, they saying that I just need to rest or stuff like that when I clearly have problems with my knees and my legs in general. this is pissing me off,, I want to get help ON MY OWN, cuz Im the only one who wants good for myself.
Well, the most appropriate example of 'a medical professional' in this case wouldn't be a doctor. Joints, muscles and mobility as an end in itself aren't things emphasized in medical training, with the partial exception of Orthopedics. Medicine is way more about recovering from disease than optimising health. A Physiotherapist would have been better.
full knee bending stimulates release of synovvial fluid, which improves knee health, my ankles are super stiff, but i still manage to sit in a squat a few minutes a day and the impact its had on my knee health is material.
I squat every morning to poo in the woods out back. I make a nice compost pile, no smell or flies. Feels nice to close the loop with nature, give back something to balance out the resources embedded in the food. Nice to have a mobility exercise integrated into my morning that helps nature.
Brilliant video, to the point and simple enough to get you started, but without loosing out on essential knowledge. Pleasant pace in the video and voiceover too. Great work.
Great video. I enjoy your channel very much. Keep up the good energy my friend. To the „stiff angles“ part i think i has to do a lot with people wearing shoes that elevate the heel (like the majority of modern shoes basically), resulting in shortened achilles tendons over time
For everyone, regarding every health-related topic here: Not documented/not reported does NOT mean "Non-existent" 01:03 Thanks for the rest of the video
Thank you! This is what I have been looking for to strengthen my lower body. I was a cross country runner, track guy, and basketball guy in high school. Doing all that I did for those activities was overrated to me and felt pointless. Pounding my legs was not the business. This is it!!! I begin applying strategy immediately. My results were immediate. I started to feel good. I felt energized. I felt hopeful because I see the longevity of this posture. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
OMG THANK YOUUU. !! I almost stopped watching at half the video because I thought I had enough information needed, but you said the most crucial part, about back pain and alignment. I saw a nother video about how it is okay to bend over when sqautting, as LONG AS YOU CAN HANDLE THE WEIGHT and NOT ego lift! It needs to be emphasize for some people. I always had lower back pain when hearing influencers speaking about keeping my spin e straight, but that cost me way more injuries and now that I arch my back a bit, I can squat heavier, pain-free, and controlled myself all the way down. I always had back pain, mind you, but it is not significant, anymore and I perform better. I always train for the real world, so keeping everything perfect at the gym will NOT work out very well in real life
Thanks Brother, I had a Lateral fusion (1&2) lumbar. It's not my first rodeo, my legs atrophied despite pt. My rt. foot has foot drop from an earlier procedure so I appreciate your channel. I'll hash it out, thanks for everything 😅.
Ahhh, yes. That's what we used to call the 'Asian squat.' Being of Asian descent myself and growing up in the Asian community in SoCal, deep squatting was something everyone just did, from young to old. Well past into my 40 and still do it without thought.
Back in the days, lots of homies squatting like that with racer bangs and Marlborough Reds...maybe even flip flops haha I've also read that fighters coming out of Asia (like MT fighters from Thailand) have better inherent balance and leg dexterity/flexibility because of the squatting than someone like a wrestler from a Western country.
When children see something interesting on the ground they don't bend over. They squat instead. This a natural phenomenon we tend to forget once we grow up.
All my super elderly Asian neighbors are in the deep squat for a long time like every day. They're usually working in the garden growing veggies. I started practicing this because of them. But I never knew all these benefits. Thank you!
Interesting and informative. Flexibility is not a problem with me (70 yr old) I've always had crazy hyperflexability but, unfortunately, chronic pain and fibro from my 30s. The doctors have been suggesting Elhor Danlos (sp) . This has resulted in serious joint damage despite my lifelong practice of yoga and episodes of weight lifting. Your sitting on a low stool and being aware of slow going Looks promising for my difficulties with knee pain . Would you have any more ideas for knees that are non destructive. Im' pretty darn tough with regard to pushing through necessary pain. Been doing a lot of the old fashioned isometric (?) exercises to , hopefully, better support those knees which are, now, arthritic. Vielen dank.
Great video! I sat in a squat to watch this video! lol Good points on the old way of don’t go below parallel. It never did make sense to me and my body. I should have listened to my body! My back and knees would have thanked me. lol Getting them turned around now though with your guys help! Cheers!
I've seen other squat videos and they are great. However, the guidance in this one along with the fantastic background music makes takes me from desiring to actually attempting to do squats until I get past the uncomfortability - indefinitely. Thank you!

I am so incredibly grateful for "there are no bad exercises, just bad preparation" part. My biggest issue always is this thought of "I'm sure I'm doing it the wrong way" and I constantly correct myself over and over again and try to be perfect and precise with my every move, which kills any fun I could ever possibly have from excercising. This one sentence... just unlocked me
great tip for incorporating the deep squat into daily life for me, was cleaning the floors in it. moving around in it naturally, going through a full room with a floorcloth is really good and develops a lot of mobilty while squatting :)
I have had joint issues from childhood, clicking joints with movement, hips that would try to dislocate, not to mention scoliosis in 4 places, congenital skull defect, and as I get older pain in multiple joints that has been diagnosed as arthritis.. Thankfully, Yoga has virtually eliminated sciatic pain, and I agree with being strong helping us live longer, my aunt who is almost 90 walks 3-5 miles a day, and looks like she is 60, not to mention still being very sharp mentally.

I appreciate your service!
a good rule that helped me: for every 1h sitting on a chair, I go for 1min into the squat position
heck yea love that. Maybe even 2
do you add those minutes into a long session like 3h sitting = 3min long squat? im curious in testing it out
@@fortnitetrashcan8308😂
I do the same thing, roughly once an hour I squat for 2-3min, it helps me A LOT with a desk job

@@Llucius1 Dumbest comment ever!
Likewise. 55 and I regularly front squat arse to grass and knees over toes. Knees have never been better :)
a sitting disease... nice!
Is that you in your PFP? No way you are 50, you really do look 30, that's awesome.
My knee is osteoarthritic and I wonder if doing these squats will help it, I'm 55

As a sedentary person in their 70s, with stiff hips and weak knees, I really appreciate your options for easing into squats. Maybe one day, I’ll be able to get up out of a squat without assistance 😊
Good! Don't give up!
Buy exercise bands. Those help me a lot.
Doing it with assistance is better than not doing it all. You're doing great 💪🏻😏👍🏻
Squats have healed my lower back pain that extended all the way to my knees, no amount of visits to physio (over 50 times to several different ones) have worked (neither their exercises) for many years.
I never understood the whole don’t squat past where you can’t see your toes. Has never made sense. Thanks for clearing this up.
I also recommend checking out Kneesovertoesguy if you haven't already.

I did have reduction surgery. now I can run! I love being able to squat well. I use it in my job all day as a Paratransit driver. My knees are killer and I’m 50! Thanks for this video
I started squatting years ago for sciatica relief. I wear flat soled beach shoes whenever possible. Your videos are very inspiring.
awesome to hear
Yes ! It’s made my sciatica better !!
This definitely just made me pause, get up and go get low for a minute, squatting deep and just exploring some movement, feels so nice

Back in the days, lots of homies squatting like that with racer bangs and Marlborough Reds...maybe even flip flops haha

Looks promising for my difficulties with knee pain . Would you have any more ideas for knees that are non destructive. Im' pretty darn tough with regard to pushing through necessary pain. Been doing a lot of the old fashioned isometric (?) exercises to , hopefully, better support those knees which are, now, arthritic. Vielen dank.
So thankful I grew up using a squat toilet and not wearing shoes in the house. Also find it more comfortable to sit on the floor than a chair or sofa.
