Alright, let's see those mph from some of ya'll!! Thanks again to LMNT for sponsoring this video! Head to drinklmnt.com/sampler to get your free sample pack with any purchase, and keep your body headache and cramp free this riding season!!
I peaked at one moment at 27.5 mph on fletcher. But most of my top speeds were around 22 mph. I watched your video and then mine. Not sure what fps you record but mine was at 24 which generally makes it look faster and you looked quite a bit faster than me. So I wouldn’t doubt you got close to 30 mph at one point. Nice video.
A basic function cycle computer will record your max, avg, time rolling, distance etc - plus real-time speed. I went back to using a wired unit and favoured brand (Cateye Velo 7 - cheap, tiny and light), after countless fails with dead batteries and failed sender units with (relatively) expensive branded wireless computers. Plus, my last wired Cateye lasted from the 90s to 2017. The battery lasts forever and you know its time to swap the battery by the dimming display over a dozen rides or so (but it keeps functioning because it's wired), so you have plenty of opportunity to swap out.
Garmin smart watches have good gps accuracy and max speed is identified after every ride. Ive had wild estimates from smartphone gps recording in strava.
Time to get a wahoo roam🤘 you get the speed and you can mount it so you can keep your phone in the bag. Awesome video. Thank you so much for posting vids🍻
If you just want to collect the stats and not do a hud, You can get a garmin watch or a garmin edge and add the speed sensor to your rear wheel. Record your rides with the garmin and you'll have all the data you could want.
Yep this is what I was going to say. With Garmin GPS tracking you don't need cell service. As much as you put into your riding and your fitness I am amazed you don't use garmin. there is no subscription fee and they track all kind of fitness and ride info for you, like max speed, HR, etc. Add a watch and track sleep, O2 saturation, etc. Cheers. Love your vids thanks for another one.
My bike is currently in the shop getting tuned up and it will be done later this week, but these past few videos have been hyping me up for when it gets out of the shop and when i can finally ride. Thanks for the great vids.
Probably the best and most accurate way to measure speed is a speed sensor and a way to access that sensor with a bike conputor . I held off on bringing technoligy on my ride but i came around . I did not even bring my phone . Now i have a garmin computer and watch . I have strava and trailforks . For an old guy this may seem surprising but having some stats helps me monitor health and give me some morivation on repetitive rides to make it more interesting. I have got above 30mph on singletrack which is max for me and maybe above the control i like to have . I am slowly realing myself in on speed and keeping myself no more than 80 percent of max capabilty .
@@matt45540 Actually my Garmin computer registers jumps with distance hangtime and speed . I am not sure if they have a algorithm to compute that with overall speed . I would assume they do . The jump calculation is a nice addition to what you can learn from a ride with technology. I don't see any of the MTB RUclipsrs doing a test on this tech from Garmin . It also may give insight in your jump performance and may even help to improve skill . Not sure if the accuracy but for me it seems consistent .. I can say it's helpful .
Nice run....One of my favorite Pisgah loops.... about a month ago I almost ran into a horse climbing that section, hit a tree about a year ago with nice scar on my left shoulder. Strava says mid to high 20's for me on max speed... Strava speed who knows.
Phone GPS and Strava both glitch out. My Strava has shown me hitting 57mph on my local trails. Now I never know whether to believe my PR's or any trophies. Probably best to just ride for the stoke and forget the numbers. 🤘🏻
We have a short steep hill on our trails where we've hit 40 mph before. That was on fully rigid bikes in the early 90s too. Dont know what they are hitting now.
You’ve got to be hitting 32-36. Especially that lower section. I was getting anxious watching with a squint in my eye. Awesome run!!! Can’t wait to see your actual mph
I have found that rolling distance and speed (from bike computer) on mtb trails (because they are not flat or straight) are greater than distance and speed measured by apps such as Strava that use gps. So on a steep downhill, 30 mph top speed on Strava might actually be closer to 34-35 mph.
If you want to track your speed and distance really good then you should consider buying a garmin or some kind of speed sensor for your bike, they work really well.
For future reference, phone apps like that generally can't record stuff when they're in the background or when the phone screen is off. The phone will kill the process to save on battery, protect your privacy, and so on. So basically to have a reliable recording you need to have the app in the foreground and the screen on while you're recording. Or just get a Garmin. (Or whatever your favourite brand is / can find a sponsor for)
Hey Alex. Im one of the trail builders at the Amelia Earhart trails. When we finish the jump line we would love to have you come xheck it out. I'll DM you
Hey Alex love the videos man. I finally took the plunge and switched from riding BMX to picking up a Marin hardtail about 3 months ago. Been loving it so far. But I've pretty much stuck to my local bike park (Duthie Hill in WA) and a couple local rides where I haven't needed anything but a water bottle. Now I'm looking to get into proper trail riding out in the woods. In doing so I know I'm gonna have to carry some gear. Going to pickup an Evoc hip pack pro. Trying to figure out exactly what I should be bringing along. I'm thinking a frame mounted pump, a tube, small patch kit (haven't gone tubeless yet), a multitool, some tire levers and food. Those seem like the essentials, but beyond that, a lot seems up for debate. Anyways, I was thinking that it would be a cool topic for a video. For the beginner rider who is pretty comfortable on the bike, but making the transition over to proper trail riding. How you can go a few different routes with mounting everything to the bike, using a hydration pack or a hip pack. What you need to carry and some recommendations on specific products or items that have saved your day on the trail that people may not think of (quick link taped to brake cables I've heard for example.)
The 10th fastest was 1:11 @ 21.9mph avg.... So you could get top 10 iam sure. Getting a strava top 10 is always a virtual 👊 feeling... Got a surprise 7th yesterday... Stoked! 🤘
I thought the GoPro had a thing that you could turn on for speed mph? Great video Good stuff Alex. Strava tells you how fast your going also. I tried LMNT and the flavor is good it's just too salty even if you keep adding more water I didn't feel like it was a benefit in fact it made me feel kind of clogged up with too much salt in my system
I have a question….where did you start from exactly because I see several different trails called Spencer . There’s lower, gap and upper. I plan on riding there when I visit Asheville for my bday in April so I’d like to know where I should start. Beginning from upper looks fun and takes you all the down to fletcher so would that be ok? I also plan on riding Kitsuma one of the days also. Gateway trail system will all those flow trials is on my list too which looks close to Kitsuma. Any help would be appreciated brother.
awesome video! I found you through Seths channel and Ilove your personality and I like watching your videos. I want to buy a new bike because im using my dads previous bike he got in 2016, a full suspension 26 inch turner which is nice but to get all the parts I want on it i'm just going to save to get a new bike. Should I get a hardtail or full suspension?
This has probably already been said but in case it hasn't, you aren't going to get accurate speed just from a gps on your phone. Especially when going really fast. You need a speed sensor linked to your phone or head unit. So in a sense this isn't accurate at all.
Alright, let's see those mph from some of ya'll!! Thanks again to LMNT for

My fastest time down Fletcher is 1:35 with a average speed of 20mph, max being 25.
Went ahead and ordered a pack, let's keep you sponsored forever.
waist
my bad
I started using LMNT a few weeks ago and I no longer get horrendous post ride headaches. Stuff really works
Posting your stats in the description for the ride might be cool but I agree the HUD would ruin some of the immersion for me man.
I peaked at one moment at 27.5 mph on fletcher. But most of my top speeds were around 22 mph. I watched your video and then mine. Love your solo POV rides, Alex. Nice work as usual.
I reckon you were hitting 30mph on that trail easily, as ever great content dude
Love the constant update... love to see old but renovated Sampler ☺
Looked like a great day for a ride! Thanks for sharing.
You solo rides are my favourites , oddly because it feels like I'm riding along with you lol.
You were fire balling on that last section!
I wish I could ride all these east coast trails. There are a lot of good ones!
Yo Alex, if you track with Strava then we can all see your trails. That would be super cool. Good community on Strava, too.
If you just want to collect the stats and not do a hud, You can get a garmin watch or a garmin edge and add the speed sensor to your rear wheel. Record your rides with the garmin and you'll have all the data you could want.

Now I'm motivated for a hot Missouri morning ride! Thanks for getting us all stoked as always!
My job here is done
I hit 24 MPH yesterday there. You were for sure sending that wayyyyy faster. My guess is 30+. Sick trail!
yeah i did 30
Thank you Alex. Always a good watch.
My bike is currently in the shop getting tuned up and it will be done later this week, but these past few videos have been hyping me up for when it gets out of the shop and when i can finally ride. Thanks for the great vids.
LMNT rocks!
Great vid. Thx
Every week, you deliver an incredible video! Thank you!
I hit 28 mph on trace ridge on a 2019 release 4c with a fox 34. I'm 6'6" and was around 250 at the time. Really dumb. So fun though.
Idk about Trailforks or Strava but you can have a max speed or average speed data field on garmin.
Garmin works really well!
Loved the video. Will be going there in the next few weeks I hope.
28.8 a couple weeks ago on Lower Fletcher according to my Strava

I have a feeling the jumps would throw this speed off when he's in the air

Steven Cole Clint Gibbs on RUclips reviews garmin computers & watches he’s a mtber out of Florida great channel
Just so you know, the number of times I've visited Salida, CO because of you is more than I can count and live over 19 hours away!
25.7 mph at 1:15 on Strava for me. But usually Strava is either right on or way wrong.
Ayyyyy that's pretty darn fast bro!! Yea, ya which end you think those tops speeds I saw on there are? 🤣
I’d say probably on the wrong side ! I don’t think that trail would hold 40+ mph
Watching this while stretching before a sweaty Sunday ride.. Stoked! 💚
Yooo have a great ride my dude!
Nice run....One of my favorite Pisgah loops.... about a month ago I almost ran into a horse climbing that section, hit a tree about a year ago with nice scar on my left shoulder. Strava says mid to high 20's for me on max speed... Strava speed who knows.
super mega ultra rapid awesome video men as always great vibes

rlly enjoy watching your content, keep it up!
Super epic ride!
Me: he’s absolutely steam rolling down that trail
Alex: that wasn’t my best run
🤦🏻♂️😂

exercise is great for getting your head straight... and no im not a hugely active person but am willing to admit it helps immensely.
So much fun, max fun !!!❤❤❤
Let me know when you are coming to Pleasant Ridge to ride!!! Holston Creek Park has an awesome trail too!!! 🤙
There is a trail in southern France(champgneux) I hit 43 mph. and I was to scared to go flat out. You have to try it if you are in France.
Guess now you gotta get an old school bike speedometer with a magnet on a spoke.😄
You should get a Garmin connect so you can track everything
Great video looks like a sick trail. You were zooming.
Looked really FAST! to me. Keep on keeping on.
Would love to hear you talk about the bike you changed to some time ago.
Strava shows speed if you click into View Analysis in the activity
Hey Alex. Im one of the trail builders at the Amelia Earhart trails. When we finish the jump line we would love to have you come xheck it out. I'll DM you
Heading there Wednesday 6-6
man i haven't ridden in a while, you motivated me😂😂
No hud , i love looking at nature more than stats
Were on the same page
Hell Yeah. Awesome vid.

I also get really bad headaches after long rides. I guess I should probably try this stuff and see what happens.
The 10th fastest was 1:11 @ 21.9mph avg.... So you could get top 10 iam sure.

Sooo awesome epik cool beautiful treil lovet 🤘👍
Singletrack Sampler you need to pick up a garmin 130+ and a speed sensor, they are not very pricey and would record the data you are looking for.
Need a Garmin, or something that has a wheel sensor.
Your issue with no service is why I got one..lol!!
The Strava KOM for lower Fletcher Downhill is 52 seconds, = 29.3mph avg over 0.43 miles of the segment, held by Logan Eure.
Its actually not. Fletcher DH Gravity is held by a JP Rogers with a time of 1:08. Logan is in second.
Another great video! I’m curious which casings you are running?
Hit 28 on my T8 chasing my friend on his Supercal. Never seen an XC bike move like that
Stanky leg @5:13
Use a Garmin with a speed sensor.
Why don't you just use a Garmin headunit or watch? Those wil usually have a GPS connection even in the thickest of forests
I regularly clock 32-36mph on that trail.
See that's more of what I was expecting to see... SO FAST!
I have a question….where did you start from exactly because I see several different trails called Spencer . There’s lower, gap and upper. Often times motivation comes while we are doing a thing, rather than what we expect: to gain motivation to do the thing, while we're doing nothing.

you need to go old school, and use a bike speedometer.
magnet on a spoke, sensor on the fork, small display on the bars.
Can’t you use the GoPro stickers feature for speed?
You need a Garmin Edge or similar bike computer...
But you could also use free Strava to track on ur phone
Garmin edge with a 76 projects enduro top tobe mount is the way to go!
What are the orange cable clips called on the front of the bike?
I use suunto app with my watch and it said max speed 27.1 and I did it when it was super wet
The Specialized app syncs wit my bike. Tells me distance top speed average speed etc
I think if you record on Strava it shows your top speed in a segment. I could be wrong as it’s been a while since I’ve used Strava.
ah commented just before you mentioned it Alex lol 😂
You should get Strava! Then you can get your speed
lets go
23.7 was my top speed on fletch
31.5 mph Strava so many 30mph.
feeling under the weather with a crazy hay fever reaction right now, this video is just what I needed!
Glad I can help bring some relief man, get better !
You don't want to use Strava?
Don't GoPros have GPS built in, then you can overlay it on the video?
You can break 30 on both Spencer and Trace Ridge. You actually don't need to break in Trace if you know it well.
This has probably already been said but in case it hasn't, you aren't going to get accurate speed just from a gps on your phone. Especially when going really fast. You need a speed sensor linked to your phone or head unit. So in a sense this isn't accurate at all.
Ooops, never mind.. It never worked for ya.
Strava will give you that info
Strava will give you a max speed in your ride log, hard to say how accurate it is, but at least it’s a data point.
it will be as accurate as your GPS, which if it's your phone, is not that accurate.
I get my cross-country bike over 25 miles an hour riding on the street going to the convenience store.
I was always told trace ridge was the fastest mile in pisgah!
You always need service to track speed with your phone, because it's using GPS to track your speed.
Or they have these things called bike computers…. 🙄🤪😂😂
36mph on the exit section on a 2021 Kona process 153 CRDL
Strava top speed is inaccurate unless you have a wheel sensor
OH NO. It's a POV video.
