Honestly; this is probably one of the saddest stories of a fictional video game character I’ve ever witnessed. Zack was just such a genuinely nice guy; despite his nature he had to deal with his best friend/mentor degrade; watched his hero turn villainess and then held captive in a lab for 4 years to appease some lunatics crazed obsession with experimenting with S cells/ jenova cells, only to eventually get labelled as a fugitive and killed for simply trying to not only live his life but save another persons. Zack Fair attempted to do right by every single person in the game, even the established villain he tried to save. Ultimately all he wanted was to be a hero and the only person he managed to save was a guy who forgot all about him moments later. He passed in his legacy to Cloud purely because he had no other choice. His life was over and his dreams were never met; he never became the hero he dreamed of being. At least we all know that cloud did right by him by becoming the main hero of this franchise. All thanks to Zack!

Cloud also said in the lifestream that he hate the way Tifa and her friends were childish (even though they were children) and would laugh at everything, where as cloud saw himself as someone who couldn’t fit in, so in a way Cloud has always been moody or more emotionally detached than most children

Tifa never shows concern for how Cloud fights until Cloud begins being controlled more by Jenova and murders Shinra soldiers. This doesn't happen until the fights at the Gongaga reactor. Given they'd definitely fought soldiers before that and Tifa had no problem, I don't think Cloud was going for the kill in most prior battles. Of course to we, the player, it always looks like he's slicin and dicin, but the same is so for Zack. They don't animate them using the blunt side, it's just supposed to be presumed, I guess.
The intro just blows me away, because in the original the prerendered cutscenes looks light years better than the in-game scenes, but now it's the other way around! Amazing how far graphics tech has come. ❤️
Angeal's Death hits the hardest as he was like the older brother to Zack, All of Zack's suffering was then freed with acceptance with Arelith's peace and acceptance for Zack knowing as a Hero comes with consequences, yet being a hero is to have Dreams and Honour.
Man the "Me? Gongaga" line just isn't the same without the og voice actor he just nailed that one down this one sounds a bit awkward Edit: it's also kinda cool to always see Sephiroth being a cool guy up until he just goes batshit crazy, like how he just lets Zack return to check on Aerith and basicly gives him the hand wave of "go take care of your girl"

I actually was a bit upset when I first found out they were bringing Zack back as it felt like it trivialized his struggles. So, I prefer the route of there being different timelines. In this timeline (the "original")...Zack dies. In the Remake timeline, he manages to elude death. We're just not playing that original story right now with the trilogy. In fact, it kind of makes me think of Final Destination, lol. For each person that didn't die in Remake, death claimed them in Rebirth. Biggs I think has now died. Wedge has. Aerith seemed like she was going to subvert her fate, but ultimately leaned into it. Zack might be the only one who escaped, but I'm not holding my breath that Death won't get its prize by game three 😂😂
While they didn’t change the animation, I like the new audio. The redone sound effects are noticeably better, and the new voices (well, in this scene anyway) are pretty close in quality to the original. Hot take, I actually like Genesis’s new voice a little more here. They also changed Angeal’s line when he interrupts Genesis from “You’ll destroy us all” to “You’ll destroy this place” which is more fitting
Seeing Sephiroth as a good guy is surreal. I think the remake is going to focus on the contrast between Sephiroth and Jenovas hold of him since their first reunion in Nibelheim.
Idk about that. Only reason being is, the Sephiroth we see in remake is the one from Advent Children doing timeline shenanigans. And the Sephiroth that *should* be from the original timeline is in the north crater chilling in a rock presumably, having already fallen into the lifestream with Jenova We'll see though when Rebirth gets here!

SPOILER WARNING! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK For all the things this game's voice direction did wrong, Cloud's scream upon Zack's death is sky much better than the OG that's for sure
3:38:43 always makes me believe that Sephiroth was a truly good person deep inside. Yes he always had some ego issues and pride with being the best that made him act questionable even before Niblehiem, but when push comes to shove he truly cared for and would sacrifice for his friends. That is, until his whole reality came crashing down and he lost his way after the Jenova reveal.
Aerith really held on to that gift right until the end. And she always came in pink. Waiting for him, hopeful, despite knowing he wasn't coming back. Kinda like her mother. I hope in the Life Stream, they get to share dreams and memories as much as they like. Edit: 5:34:20 oh ! Well, better than to live in ignorance.
I just want to say I appreciate your cutscenes. You do a great job with transitions, and I like you still have the gameplay portions which include dialouge. Thanks you!
I’m new so i can’t seem to find anything wrong with Zack’s voice? I think the va did a very good job and he sounds just like the nice, confident dude with golden retriever vibes that I imagine Zack to be. Maybe its just that everybody got used to the old va and that’s why you can’t give this new one a chance? Idk just thoughts.
@4:37:18 is the perfect way of how the og actors made the scene looked impactful. The new VAs aren’t bad at all but having the og voicelines made me more nostalgic & think how much depth/tone it gives when watching the cutscenes.
Most of the OG was text based more than people remember. Only the key scenes. The addition of full voice acting really made the world of difference with this game for me. He’s a bit nasally compared to Rick but the adjustment to this Zack doesn’t take long if you’re open minded, the performances are very similar really and I’ve learned to see this as the canon one after smashing it out in 3 days

My eyes full if tears when i watched Zack passed away... although he died was not in vain. He deseved the title " Soldier 1st Class " for his sacrificed & dedicated his own life for protect others 😢😢😢
As backwards as it is this game was my intro to the FF series and then I played VII so I was super excited to see the references and consequences of the remake
Honestly, I think the new VA did a good job. No one will EVER compare to Rick and his performance will always be unmatched. But personally, I‘m content with what we‘ve got here. Blown away by this story in new graphics.
I hope it doesn't hurt new fans to the game. Zach's character comes off differently. He seems younger, goofier, and a little more carefree. For a story that focuses soo heavily on one person, that lack of charisma is a little unengaging. I'd been playing reunion for a couple days now and couldn't pinpoint why it wasn't gripping me in the same way. Rewatching the old cutscenes reminded me the VA was super important for me to empathize with the story.
Square Enix made the decision to go with completely new VA for pretty much all the characters in the remake so not much can really be done since it's their decision and all.

It was for a stupid-ass reason, and they absolutely shouldn't have, especially considering that the old VAs had already recorded the whole game at that point, but now they couldn't just go “Oh, wait. Let's bring the old actors back to record the new lines for Reunion”. And since they needed to record the lines that weren't voiced before, they couldn't just use the old VO for the entire game. Funny, though, that they left this one line in a cutscene and didn't change it. Did they just forget to change it, or is Ian here actually right, I wonder? Guess we'll never know.
I cried when I realized that Aerith was waiting, his parents were waiting, even Tseng was waiting, Zack left them all hanging. Such a tragedy. Such a beautiful story.

Because Cloud is so damn emotionally and socially stunted, he didn't even know what a high-five was 😂. Or, was utterly floored that anyone would want to high-five him. Jokes take even more time to process and understand and that would've short-circuited Cloud completely 😅. He does eventually get better...but whoa, boy, he's had a hill to climb!
I'm glad I watched this before playing the new remake. I just bought it, and I was pondering whether or not I should watch this because I heard that it spoils some things. Luckily I there wasn't much here that I didn't know already just because ff7 has been around so long, I've already been spoiled for most of it, but seeing the story first hand is still SO good!
LOL No, just new contracts. I have mixed feelings about the voices myself but overall I'm just glad CC was revived because this is a very bel9oved title to me.
there is a mod that replaces the new voices with the original PSP ones (Rick Gomez, yay), BUT it is glitchy and the voices after Banora up and stop working, so it's a work in progress
I was kinda curious at first whether or not the new voice acting was just an exchange of canonical intent. Just from the first few lines of dialogue, it was unironically jarring to hear the change of character in Zacks optimistic and cocky attitude into one of inexperience and naivety.
Coming here after Remake and Rebirth, this adds so much context. And boy oh boy, do I love Zack even more now. He was such a great all throughout, and I wish him a happy ending so badly. Preferably with Aerith, which might be an option going by Rebirth's ending, and if not perhaps with Cissnei. She never got to tell him her name, after all. Ultimately, thank you for making these videos, I would've never experienced this amazing story if not for them.
While I’m not a fan of the new VAs for Zack and Sephiroth, I love the new cast. But when watching this game, part of me believes that they weren’t given enough time to do more takes. So if it sounds like they did it in one or two takes, it probably was.
I love the game, the story and characters when I played this way back in the day, and it's even better like this. If however, I was to make one small suggestion: it's that they really should have toned down Genesis' continued and prolonged use of quotes from that Loveless book. At first it's a cool quirk granted, but the more he appears, and the more the quotes come thick and heavy, the more problematic I find it becomes. I mean, how much more personal details could we have gotten out of him if the quotes had been toned back just a bit?
So Sephiroth managed to take hold of the Life Stream because he doesn't degrade, as such, his cells could not difuse. Impressive. Hardly a monster, regardless of his Jenova origins. A monster wouldn't have such control, much less how to use it. Genesis is POS. Truly a dark angel. He's the only monster I saw through the entire game. He was truly LOVELESS.
Oh man the feels and the days of playing this on psp. Zack's new voice is something ya gotta get used to.. I for one don't like his voice in this one, sounds really try-hard and childish but i love Zack anyway. Zack will always be my fav! I love Cloud to but, it started with Zack and he'll always have a special place in my heart ❤😭😭😭
I'm generally one to like English voices in games and anime so I don't have to focus on it the whole time, like watching anime on my second monitor while I game on my main monitor but the voices are pretty bad this time around.
Well, the flashback sequence was an emotional ride. But now, it's time to finish Cloud's story. It's time for him and Tifa to snap out of it, as Barret says when they leave the Life Stream. It's time to see if dreams and honor are enough to stop the end the of the world and honor the fallen.
I just realized.. these game mechanics are the foundations of the newer FF games. More active based combat and excitement. The sales from this title must've been absolutely bonkers. I played it in 08 or 09.. fantastic!
I like how cell phones suddenly didn't exist in the next game. Imagine if Aerith could contact Elmyra or Barret could have called Marlene. I wish they would have taken as much time on this game modernizing it as they did to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Would have been one of the best games of all time.
I didn't know this game existed until today. Some of the events in this one were brought over to FF7R. The entirety of FF7 is really complex and hard to follow with all the flashbacks and whatnot. I wonder if things will go down differently in Rebirth. The Remake itself is severely lacking story-wise, but then I saw that the entire remake is going to have three parts; Remake, Rebirth (coming at the end of this month), and a final not yet announced part, so there's plenty of opportunity there to present the rest of the story, or even present a story that deviates from the og FF7 story. I don't know why but the slums and the plate and topside and all that, it just gives me major borderlands vibes for some reason, and I love it!
I still can't believe what a amazing Job Square has done with that Remaster for a freaking PSP Game. The Graphics are not so much weaker then the two Remake Games, what is amazing.

I'd been playing reunion for a couple days now and couldn't pinpoint why it wasn't gripping me in the same way. Rewatching the old cutscenes reminded me the VA was super important for me to empathize with the story.

Square Enix made the decision to go with completely new VA for pretty much all the characters in the remake so not much can really be done since it's their decision and all.

It was for a stupid-ass reason, and they absolutely shouldn't have, especially considering that the old VAs had already recorded the whole game at that point, but now they couldn't just go “Oh, wait. Let's bring the old actors back to record the new lines for Reunion”. And since they needed to record the lines that weren't voiced before, they couldn't just use the old VO for the entire game. Funny, though, that they left this one line in a cutscene and didn't change it. Did they just forget to change it, or is Ian here actually right, I wonder? Guess we'll never know.

After watching the whole thing i cant stand zacks new voice every time i see him i want to hear the og actor no hate to the new va but i think the old was way more iconic

I'm glad I watched this before playing the new remake. I just bought it, and I was pondering whether or not I should watch this because I heard that it spoils some things. Luckily I there wasn't much here that I didn't know already just because ff7 has been around so long, I've already been spoiled for most of it, but seeing the story first hand is still SO good!

I just replayed it and i love it. It has an user score of 8 in metacritic and very positive in Steam. They really did a goob job with the remaster.

You can tell the game is kinda dated from the dialogue but it’s a blast from the past for sure!
there is a mod that replaces the new voices with the original PSP ones (Rick Gomez, yay), BUT it is glitchy and the voices after Banora up and stop working, so it's a work in progress

I was kinda curious at first whether or not the new voice acting was just an exchange of canonical intent. Just from the first few lines of dialogue, it was unironically jarring to hear the change of character in Zacks optimistic and cocky attitude into one of inexperience and naivety.
Coming here after Remake and Rebirth, this adds so much context. And boy oh boy, do I love Zack even more now. He was such a great all throughout, and I wish him a happy ending so badly. Preferably with Aerith, which might be an option going by Rebirth's ending, and if not perhaps with Cissnei. She never got to tell him her name, after all. Ultimately, thank you for making these videos, I would've never experienced this amazing story if not for them.

I watched ff7 remake first it left me with so many unanswered questions (WHICH ARE STILL UNANSWERED 😭)
While I’m not a fan of the new VAs for Zack and Sephiroth, I love the new cast. But when watching this game, part of me believes that they weren’t given enough time to do more takes. So if it sounds like they did it in one or two takes, it probably was.
I love the game, the story and characters when I played this way back in the day, and it's even better like this. If however, I was to make one small suggestion: it's that they really should have toned down Genesis' continued and prolonged use of quotes from that Loveless book. At first it's a cool quirk granted, but the more he appears, and the more the quotes come thick and heavy, the more problematic I find it becomes. I mean, how much more personal details could we have gotten out of him if the quotes had been toned back just a bit?

So Sephiroth managed to take hold of the Life Stream because he doesn't degrade, as such, his cells could not difuse. Impressive. Hardly a monster, regardless of his Jenova origins. A monster wouldn't have such control, much less how to use it.
Genesis is POS. Truly a dark angel. He's the only monster I saw through the entire game. He was truly LOVELESS.

I for one don't like his voice in this one, sounds really try-hard and childish but i love Zack anyway. Zack will always be my fav! I'm generally one to like English voices in games and anime so I don't have to focus on it the whole time, like watching anime on my second monitor while I game on my main monitor but the voices are pretty bad this time around.

Well, the flashback sequence was an emotional ride. But now, it's time to finish Cloud's story. It's time for him and Tifa to snap out of it, as Barret says when they leave the Life Stream.

I just realized.. these game mechanics are the foundations of the newer FF games. More active based combat and excitement. The sales from this title must've been absolutely bonkers. I played it in 08 or 09.. fantastic!

I like how cell phones suddenly didn't exist in the next game. Imagine if Aerith could contact Elmyra or Barret could have called Marlene. I wish they would have taken as much time on this game modernizing it as they did to Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Would have been one of the best games of all time.
Watched this for some research mainly into Genesis on a theory I recently discovered but I kept getting side tracked about 👏Sephiroth’s👏Daddy👏issues👏

I remember playing this on psp and when I found out zack dies I got sad and didn’t want to play anymore cuz I really liked zack lol
I didn't know this game existed until today. Some of the events in this one were brought over to FF7R. The entirety of FF7 is really complex and hard to follow with all the flashbacks and whatnot. I wonder if things will go down differently in Rebirth. The Remake itself is severely lacking story-wise, but then I saw that the entire remake is going to have three parts; Remake, Rebirth (coming at the end of this month), and a final not yet announced part, so there's plenty of opportunity there to present the rest of the story, or even present a story that deviates from the og FF7 story.
I don't know why but the slums and the plate and topside and all that, it just gives me major borderlands vibes for some reason, and I love it!
When they're on the snowy mountain all I can think is, how are they not dying from the cold. 😂
