Thanks again for trying out our Gold kit! You were honestly a great student! ...besides not keeping the pipette vertical lol... And your dyes came out amazing, both pre and post teaching ;)
Watching this was relaxing and then also frustrating when Anthony does the things that we all did at the start of this addiction. Glad to see this collab. Waiting for the next dyed-disc-only round on the channel soon :-)
I love when you make rounds when playing with your own bag and you play tournaments and try to shoot well. I feel like if you kept doing more of that instead of disc reviews people would like it more. I really like watching you progress and one day win a elite event!
Really great job on the video, and on the dyes! This is how it starts. Then, next thing you know, you have a big front load food dehydrator (not an air fryer or oven!), a direct drive record player, gallons of clear glue waiting for use (and reuse), a corner full of jugs of chemicals, and racks of little glass dropper jars (way easier to control than pipettes, in my opinion) filled with a rainbow of colors ready to go. The toothpick works fine for getting rid of bubbles if you don't have a torch, like you were trying to do, but instead of popping them by stabbing them drag them to the edge of the pan and they will either pop easier there or at least be out of the way. The only thing I feel safe using to clean discs is and not ruin stamps is the Magic Eraser or just some Dawn dish soap and water, I have definitely had alcohol strip a stamp off off like that before, and acetone does it instantly. Even the magic eraser can take off a stamp it if you scrub too hard. I hope to see you continue with dyeing and making videos of your results!
Dyers Guild kit is definitely the best way to get into dyeing discs! I did it for the first time at the Music City Open last year at the booth. If there's a PDGA event, they're usually there.
one cool thing you could do if you really take a liking to dyeing discs, is whenever you play against pros/whoever, if you win or lose whatever said challenge, you could take one of their discs from the bag and then they have to give you a disc to customize and dye then they have to throw the disc you made for them for a pro tour event
You can use a food torch to pop the bubbles, especially after you’ve put your dye in the glue. The torch will pop the big surface bubbles so that your disc doesn’t have colorless spots in the final dye.
This is such a cool idea. I wanted to do something like this on my channel, but the guys that did my dye jobs take a while doing the process and I wanted to get it all done in one sitting.
I started with lotion dyes, which was cool because the discs smell like coco butter. Also did shaving cream and dry powder dye, which creates a burst effect. I've found, for more detail, less moving it around with the toothpick is better. That target grid in the bottom of the pan is an amazing tip.
Dunno if I missed it but when you were asking about ovens, the thing everyone uses who does it on the regular is a dehydrator. The right size for disc trays, most have multiple shelves so more than one at a time and they have timers. 120 for 45-90 minutes is what I see a lot do it for and they seem to get awesome results.
You will get less dye clumps on the bottom of the bottle if you add dye to hot water. I know adding water to dye sounds the same but it is not. Put the hot water in first and then the dye. Mix and then add in the acetone.
a tip, if you want only a one color rim for example on an DD, take a sponge, dip it in the color you want, for example blue, then whipe it on the rim, you can do it 2 or 3 times, to get it darker more intence, but it works! I did the same, pushed the disc down in the gluebed and the color is great, pattern, but the glue dryes and it is a little bit of work to skrub it off afterwards, but its okey, looks cool with dyed rim :) i have also dyed again discs, that im not satisfyed with, a second time, the colors became then mor intence and it worked great, alwasy wait 48hours, let the bed sit, maby it isn´t neccesary amount of time, but thats what i do :)
You could look into getting a food dehydrator to use for heating your bed. They are usually large enough, but finding one that doesn't have a center channel might be a bit tricky. They have a timer and don't get hot enough to melt your disc. I just had a look and the one from "Elite Gourmet" for 40$ might be a good fit, you might have to use a tin that is a little flatter though.
You can just add more dye (glue too) onto a bed after pullingna disc from it, add swirls and put another disc in. And repeat. And repeat. And repeat. It cuts down the cost even more and you can make "sets" of discs like this 😎
@@dyersguild ah ya man thank you for making the cool pack of things to get started. :D we have done acrylic pouring in the past and it seems fairly simalar
i've never dyed before. I have a stack of discs prime for dying, but always worried about messing it up. It definitely looks like less is more when it comes to manipulating the dye. the more you run the toothpick through it, the more it wants to blend instead of show the pattern. Could probably be utilized to force blending into the pattern. I might have to pick up one of these kits
I was like you when I first started dyeing, afraid I was going to mess up. But, you have to take that first step and you WILL make mistakes, but that's how you learn!
@@BodanzaDiscGolf Sweet :P Disc dyeing is quite fun. Makes someone, like me, who as basically just above no artistic talent, feel like even I can do something thats actually quite beautiful. And, another plus with floetrol instead of glue is that you can use it on like a canvas as well. So, you could do it with your wife/kid as well, and hang the result on the wall somewhere. Might have to wait a bit for the kid, but whatever :P There is a lot of tutorials or just "this is what I did, and this is the result"-sort of videos out there. This really makes me want to try dyeing for the first time.
Do it, we make disc dyeing easy! If you have any questions or concerns, you know where to find us!

You can use soap and water to wash the top so it takes the dye rather than alcohol if you're concerned about it taking some of the stamp off.
After the stamp starting to wipe off I suggested that... little too late lol.

Good tip to get rid of the bubbles is drag a tooth pick through the bubbles the will easily come to the surface and pop
Good tip!
You can use a food torch to pop the bubbles, especially after you’ve put your dye in the glue. The torch will pop the big surface bubbles so that your disc doesn’t have colorless spots in the final dye.
Just make sure the acetone is completely evaporated and lids closed... Otherwise you'll have a nice fire to keep you warm.
@@dyersguild I always keep the acetone far away from the workspace.

Thanks Chaz!
Perfect timing! I have a bunch of white discs laying around that I had this thought of maybe trying to dye them.
You're going to need more once you start your journey! lol.
My mini is my daughters initials that they helped dye. They love helping with dyes!
That's awesome! I had my daughter dye a few discs as well. It's cool to see the ideas they come up with.

The Govee teapot is the goat👏🏼

This, we use a 9 tray from Ivation. Makes things so much easier and consistent. We set it at 131° F and let clear glue beds sit for about 45mins.

Blood red is a deep reddish-brown shade with dramatic intensity and heat

I only do cell dyes, theyre so much fun.
I love the look of cell dyes!
@dyersguild and they're a blast making. I just love how we'll the color pops when using floetrol.
Dyeing is addicting.
If you put it in the oven and just turn the light on it will heat up the oven. It will keep it cozy without risk of damage
Until you forget about it and someone else pre-heats to oven...
Not a bad start.
Yo, did you tie dye that sweatshirt, or is that something I can purchase somewhere?
I grease stained it and it wouldnt come out so I did a bleach tye dye to save it!

Should dye with floetrol instead. Much better imo.

8 hours later: "Hmmm...where's my other pie pan?"
Highly recommend some see through plastic at first to learn how to set them in. You can see where it fucks it up lol
Agree.
^ This.
Was surprised how much the plastic affects the dye. Base plastic does not dye at all
Yes! Plastic type makes a huge difference. We have a disc plastic acceptability chart to see what works best.
@ yeah I read that after I tried to dx plastic. Was using the shaving cream method. Zero color on the disc
I'm a dummy who wants to dye discs!
Same! Like Dave, I'm also NOT good at disc golf either, but I have fun and that's what really matters.
Luckily we make disc dyeing easy! If I can do it, you can to!
Your wife must have Finnish blod in her. She looks realy Finnish. :)
Bodanza, love you buddy, but you’re missing that artistic bone in your body 😂
It's not this hard to to. So tbh
Maybe a toaster over
I'd recommend a Dehydrator, toaster oven might get a little too hot.
