The Joy of Water Pump Pliers. No matter the name, there is magic in these simple wide mouth grippers

- Many call them water pump pliers but they are known by lots of different names. Regardless, these wide mouth adjustable pliers are a mainstay in all tool sets and are used almost as much as screwdrivers. Size matters, but not as much as you'd think.
My favorite, and the gateway drug to water pump pliers is the Knipex Cobra, with the 250mm being a good starting point at an affordable price and with plenty of room grow or shrink on each side of it. On Amazon at: amzn.to/3xPi97L
There are lots of great tools but Knipex just seems to do almost everything right.
For years and years, I thought these were called water pump pliers because they were intended for working on water pumps. Finally, I figured out that it's because they open and close like a pump handle. D'oh! And Knipex Cobras get my vote as the best, for what it's worth.
Now that's a cool piece of trivia. Thanks1
Nah. It's because they were used on water pumps on autos and in industrial pumps they hold the lock nut for the impeller fan.
Picked up 3 Knipex at Menards today and after the cashier wrung them up she had to look over the total for about 10 seconds thinking she did something wrong; she couldn't imagine 3 pliers being over $100. All she said was "Holy shit, those are expensive!" Yeah lady, I know 😭
Just came across your channel-I AM TOTALLY IMPRESSED (WOWED even) with your presentation and your obvious deep research and experience-Thank you, I'll keep coming back. Cheers-Will
A couple of thoughts...
Those Knipex adjustment buttons are replaceable... the kits include pivot pin[1], button cap, spring & screw; and can be had from most anywhere that sells Knipex.
Knipex also makes a rarely seen/mentioned 10" 'Channel Lock' style version... the 89 01 250. They market them as 'Groove Joint' pliers.
Knipex makes Cobra's up to 560mm (22") that are fabulous for larger stuff, and the Pliers Wrench up to 400mm (about 16")... that additionally doubles as a pretty good press on occasion.
I know it's entirely personal preference, but more often than not I'm reaching for the Knipex Alligators. I find them more 'nimble', and definitely easier to clean if/when spooged.
Cool videos, Thanks!
[1] Most of the kits come with both new & old style pivot pins.
Cobras are great, and twin grips are fantastic. Alligators are my go to though. Even though I've never had an issue, I feel that dirt getting in the button could be problematic and the mechanism could be damaged in tight spaces. Alligators are simple and have the advantages of box joint design. I'm probably just old school.
Cobras are the gold standard. I‘ve discovered that the 150mm Cobra 🐍 are the most versatile pliers, fit well in your front (or back) pocket and has a remarkable span.
I use my 180mm Cobra everyday at work. It’s large enough to handle anything I come across at work and just long enough to stick out of a pocket to grab easily.
Knipex makes the alligator. The Kleins are made by NWS.
When a copyrighted name becomes so common place the general public recognizes it as a general description the copyright is lost, this is why google is terrified of the term "google it" becoming synonymous with searching the web
I just heard the same thing about Nintendo and how they pushed so hard in the 80s not to have everyone just call any game console a Nintendo so they wouldn’t lose their trademark. Makes sense about google. In Germany apparently people don’t use the term “staple it” they say “Bostitch” it.
Aspirin and Heroin were both originally Bayer trade names for those respective drugs
Greetings from Bulgaria. Big and good collection.
Whoa, was that a Mrs. Doc cameo?
Kool video
You've got various comments praising the Knipex, and I like them and they are the design that the others copied when the patent ran out, but I have to say, the Stahlwille (or VBW who make them for S.) action is nicer/smoother (and the jaws are just as good); and perhaps best of all, Hazet's lever-button which allows you to adjust from near the bottom of the handle when you're reaching into a tight spot, and unlike any other of these wp pliers, adjust from both sides at a pinch (no matter which handed version you get), is just superb.
Thanks for the review pal. I thought I had alot of pliers
Knipex for the win even over my Mac ones but they all serve a purpose. Nice video though
Would a Knipex Pliers Wrench with teeth be stronger than the regular ones? Would it be better than the Cobras, at least for hex fasteners you don't mind marring? What do you think?
I’m interested in the extra small pliers wrench 86 04 100, supposed to release this year.
How about a review of auto-adjust water pump pliers? Like the KNIPEX SmartGrip 85 01 250 VS the Wiha AUTO GRIP 32637.
These look like a huge time saver, compared to my eternal struggle of constantly adjusting push buttons.
They've been on the market for years, why doesn't everyone have these? what's wrong with them? I've never use them in the wild, so I'd love to know what I'm missing.
Knipex SmartGrip Cobra Pliers 8501250. Convenience and Speed when a Cobra isn't fast enough.

Why not the comfort grip handles for 250 Cobra?
Have you seen the Bahco pliers? Be curious to see if you have seen them and compare to the cobra's . Love your videos keep it up!
I do have a set of the larger Bahco adjustable pliers. They live in my truck. I'll dig them out for a video. Thanks.
Until all ove my almost 30 various pairs of Channellock pliers and cutters start to fail me I just don't need knipex.
I've got an original 1933 pre patent pair of # 420's from my grandfather that are still going strong, so I don't see that happening any time soon.
I'm not hating on Knipex because I have no reason to and I'm actually thinking of trying the XS pliers wrench, but I just don't have a need or reason to buy them.
Last two tools I got from knipex had cast marks on them. Kinda upset me. One was hybrid linesman plier the other was a angled cutter.
Klein = nws
Do you have any Wilde Tools?
Not that I know of. Is there one you suggest?
😎🇩🇪😎🇩🇪😎🇩🇪😎
Watching from New Zealand, knipex are ok,but SNAP-ON work better
The Milwaukee’s work great with a pair of gloves on
I see nothing special about the cobras
It’s a silent K.
Germans pronounce it Kah-nee-pex
Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!
Most of them, copied the Knipex teeth, but none works as the Knipex does. As soon as I discovered Knipex tools, my enthousiasm hit the roof and my wallet asked me for a divorse!
It's amazing just how much a difference small angles make in grabbing fasteners. This is where the look-alike fall short.
Goodness those milwaukees look like knipex from the 1800s
