This Guy and whole grew up and went to my high-school Its great to see small town guys getting big names for themselves God bless you guys. Great band, even greater cause. :)
^agreed. drop b is NOT an open tuning. An open tuning allows all 6+ strings to be played to create a (typically) major chord with the tuning note being the root. Drop B tuning is not particularly major or minor. It is C# tuning (standard, but 3 semitones flat) with the bass string "dropped" to B. This allows the player to use one finger to make "power chords", which are just 5th chords (which can be major or minor depending on the context). In this case, the open bass strings produce a B5 chord.
I don't understand why so many people dislike this little series of videos of Chris. In this one, yeah the guitar does have inlays which sucks for a tutorial. But I mean still, atleast he's doing something for you people /:
Drop B does change the sound of the guitar, yes. Drop B is a very low tuning, you will need bigger gauged strings to play in drop b and stay in tune. Also he is using distortion. If your amp has a built in distortion then use it, if not then you'll need a distortion pedal. Amp settings should be a decent amount of gain, treble, and low end. Low mids.
Hey man basically its drop D tuned down a step and a half, so the strings are BF#BEG#C# - in terms of using this tuning, you'll want to get your guitar set up for it. Atm I use drop B on my Ibanez MTM2 with D'addario 12-60 (12, 16, 20, 34, 46, 60) strings on it, but I'm actually planning on going thicker to a custom set of 12-64 or something. I wouldn't try strings that thick though, if you are starting out, I would get the D'addario 12-54 (12, 16, 20, 32, 42, 54) set and see if that works for u
The open chord would be a B power chord, Chris probably just meant a dropped tuning as in if you play the bottom 3 strings "open" it makes a power chord
@SixStringHarmonies Lowest I like to tune is drop C personally. Yeah I think Pantera has used every tuning possible and even made up tunings lol. When I started I played a lot of standard stuff like Metallica, then went to drop d for A7X, Disturbed, etc, now I just mainly use drop C or drop D. Wouldn't mind doing some drop b again though just to change it up for a while.
@SixStringHarmonies Hope you don't plan on playing heavy metal in standard tuning. I don't understand how you get a tuning is "too low"? I've got guitars in all tunings and never have problems with strings...
@bkellum89 it's a joke, my friend.....But as a matter of fact, Metallica, for instance, did a fine job playing metal in standard tuning imo. No need for tuning tricks like a 3 tone drop to add "darkness"....they did it with clever intervals, tri-tones, and lyrics.
I am new at playing guitar and I was wanting to learn how to play this song when I get a little better. I don't exactly know all there is to know about guitars yet, but does Drop B give that guitar the sound it has now? And what should the settings on the amp be?
@SharpShooter92 Look, I know reading can be challenging for you, but if you read my response where I stated it was a joke, that should clarify things. Just read slowly and sound out the letters. I assume what you mean by "metal guitar", is that it's equipped with Floyd Rose and a locking nut/tuners, and active pups. I agree my Clapton Strat and ES-335 are not good "metal guitars". I use a PRS SE Allender sig w/ EMG's as my "metal/active guitar". Sounds great thru my THD Flexi 50 no doubt
·B chord is: B F# D ·Drop b tuning is B F# B E G# C# so, there's no D ( third minor of chord b). And cuz there's no third, it can't be a minor or major chord. Because the chord B minor has B D F#, and without D, it would be just an interval of a fifth, not a chord of any kind.
@dmohr7 I like his tone, and obviously alot of other guitarists do to, since a lot of more well know guitarists use EMGs and dead notes or palm muting.
@KillswitchEngage42 No, i did not say that. I said there are no shitty guitar players. I did not say there are guitar players that are better then others. If he wants to write hardcore riffs and does so, why bash him?
@KillswitchEngage42 It's quite true actully. To someone who can play "only" chords this might amazing playing, to someone who cannot play a couple of chords may be amazing. I realised in my previous band that guitar players bash eachother too much..
@cheesheil Yeah, they're pretty Christian off camera. I know Mike, their singer, from Dayton, Ohio when he used to play hockey with my friends an I. Have you ever met them? Besides that, I could try to explain why maybe they don't write uber-technical stuff but I didn't write the music and I'm not in the band so I don't know. Go to one of the shows and ask them yourself, they'll give you a straight answer. And w.r.t clothing style, who cares? They wear what they want just like you do.
If you watch in the related video section to the right>>>>> There is a video called "The Devil Wears Prada Rig Tour". You question about amp settings will be answered there.
@GWDPREZ07 its metalcore hich is a sub genre of metal, so technically it is metal, which means it is metal if im not mistaken. so i guess you have a 42 inch johnson and are a white irish guy
@bkellum89 Alternate tunings always pissed me off. I understand the purpose but when I wanna play metallica it's in standard, avenged sevenfold... mostly dropped D or below, SRV plays everything in E flat, Alice in Chains.... down a full step for almost every tune. Then you've got Pantera who go a quarter step down for most early stuff like "Walk". Now ya got guys playing dropped C#, C, and now B all on one album.....ugh....I don't have seven guitars. Don't get me started on "Nashville Tuning"..
@SixStringHarmonies I will say it's a hassle with 2 or 3 different tunings on a cd. Metallica doesn't sound as heavy tone wise, if that makes any sense as some of the metalcore bands. They're more thrashy in their older music which is good, but not heavy like these bands in my opinion. I like both though lol.
@superbeasstt how do you know for sure? just because they said through some interview? is there any footage or any substantial evidence of them attending church? bands who claim to be christian just say it to make a buck...
This Guy and whole grew up and went to my high-school
Its great to see small town guys getting big names for themselves God bless you guys. Great band, even greater cause. :)
I seriously got chills the first time I heard this song... still do.

I love how heavy he made the guitar sound especially those open palm mutes
Love that brutal tone. Still can hear every note.
I don't understand why so many people dislike this little series of videos of Chris. In this one, yeah the guitar does have inlays which sucks for a tutorial. But I mean still, atleast he's doing something for you people /:
If you look on the neck of most guitars, you will see little dots or designs on certain frets, so that you can know where those certain frets are
Beautiful guitar
@walkkdatshibby the movie is based on a book One of there parents was reading they were named after the book.
Drop B does change the sound of the guitar, yes. Drop B is a very low tuning, you will need bigger gauged strings to play in drop b and stay in tune. Also he is using distortion. @MattDeatherage well actually "the Devil Wears Prada" is a reference to their religion. it's suppose to mean don't pick things over god.
Hey man basically its drop D tuned down a step and a half, so the strings are BF#BEG#C# - in terms of using this tuning, you'll want to get your guitar set up for it. Thanks for the tips. been trying to get this down for a while.
@rrplymouth70 Why did he pick the wrong guitar? What's the big deal without having inlays?
Chris I don't even care man. You may not shred like most guitarists out there, but man you can write good music. In the end, that's all that matters.
This song is sooooo fun to play! GOT DAMN!
So wouldn't having inlay's HELP you when trying to watch this and learn? or am I wrong?
@SuperBspb Ok... nice... Is Dean a good guitar?
@SixStringHarmonies Hope you don't plan on playing heavy metal in standard tuning. I don't understand how you get a tuning is "too low"? I've got guitars in all tunings and never have problems with strings...
So... drop b would be a minor tuning?.
@bkellum89 it's a joke, my friend.....But as a matter of fact, Metallica, for instance, did a fine job playing metal in standard tuning imo. No need for tuning tricks like a 3 tone drop to add "darkness"....they did it with clever intervals, tri-tones, and lyrics.
please tell me what kind of guitar model?
What brand is the guitar? Sounds good!
@dmohr7 Hate to tell you this but, thats an Ibanez, not an ESP.
I am new at playing guitar and I was wanting to learn how to play this song when I get a little better. I don't exactly know all there is to know about guitars yet, but does Drop B give that guitar the sound it has now? And what should the settings on the amp be?
Chris,
Could you make a video on how you make your guitar burps and chugs sound clean.
@Spaceysquid why can't you learn both?
What's the intro song to the video in the beginning?
What's the name of the song at the beginning?
i always wanted to get one of these guitars, they are good and not that expensive
i guys, any tips on how to make the low string stop? My string stays ringing out whenever I play the higher strings. 2:40 min in the vid
is he using a emg 85 in bridge????
whats the song in the intro
@bob3063v i think its's Ibanez GART60. I think so
what song was in the intro??????
See you next year in Malaysia... \m/
I hope they come to Malaysia too, haha; but I don't think they will be allowed to perform though, because they are a Christian band.
Asher Paul Ang I went to their show in Malaysia a couple of months ago.
They're coming again!?
@SharpShooter92 Look, I know reading can be challenging for you, but if you read my response where I stated it was a joke, that should clarify things. Just read slowly and sound out the letters. I don't play guitar so I'm just wondering, what's an Inlay?
Qual o modelo desta guitarra?
Are Dean guitars good?
·B chord is: B F# D
·Drop b tuning is B F# B E G# C#
so, there's no D ( third minor of chord b). And cuz there's no third, it can't be a minor or major chord.
Because the chord B minor has B D F#, and without D, it would be just an interval of a fifth, not a chord of any kind.
this is great music
i wonder what guitar is chris using?
What guitar is that?
HE MAKES IT LOOK SO EASY!
Have this same guitar. Love it
nice tone
@Tobiscuits yea it is music actually, its called "metal" buddy
TDWP!!!
HELL YESSS!!!
my second favourite band! :)
Y U upload it twice?!
these guys have put out 3 new albums???...all 3 new videos have songs from 3 different "new" albums
Me too!!! People always complain about the lack of fret markers. :D
@dmohr7 I like his tone, and obviously alot of other guitarists do to, since a lot of more well know guitarists use EMGs and dead notes or palm muting.
Hey! If anyone that is an expert with the guitars.... Can you recommend me a really good guitar brand please!
this is a pretty nice lick, dont hate
@1kydde2 Also forgot one statement. There is NO shitty genre. It's a matter of opinion aswell. Why go here if your only going to complain?
@marcussilvamgs
yeah and they had the name before the movie so dont make some dumb assumption based comment
Can you actually show us how to play the whoe song? Its a great song and I just wanna play it on guitar
Chris is a great guitarist ... only in these videos show us how to play their songs that's all
Chris ImI
@KillswitchEngage42 No, i did not say that. I said there are no shitty guitar players. I did not say there are guitar players that are better then others. If he wants to write hardcore riffs and does so, why bash him?
Im not a fan of TDWP, but I have to be honest, this riff is pretty fucking sick!
I know right, there's not even gear tour videos of them.
@berserker213 respect the band and the type of music dude.
@KillswitchEngage42 It's quite true actully. To someone who can play "only" chords this might amazing playing, to someone who cannot play a couple of chords may be amazing. I realised in my previous band that guitar players bash eachother too much..
He left .. and the sound changed completely. Not a bad thing .. just remembering d days gone by.
@brentgarner the band was formed before the movie came out
I love this song defiantly going to give it a crack now :D
can some one tab this plz
@Chaz6993X i agree, if all the most talented bands were huge then Dream Theater would be the biggest metal band in the world, rather than disturbed
@bkellum89 Alternate tunings always pissed me off. I understand the purpose but when I wanna play metallica it's in standard, avenged sevenfold... mostly dropped D or below, SRV plays everything in E flat, Alice in Chains.... down a full step for almost every tune. @veeragandersucks I did not mean he had shitty tone. I simply quoted Kydde. ;)
In my opinion the tone aint bad, but it's not great either. :)
@SixStringHarmonies I will say it's a hassle with 2 or 3 different tunings on a cd. Metallica doesn't sound as heavy tone wise, if that makes any sense as some of the metalcore bands. Killer riff!! :D
How to explain the fact Chris Rubey hasn't learned a scrap of theory: "It's basically an octave power chord."
Because that exists, Chris Rubey.
Sweet... Thx!
@Tobiscuits yeah cause its all that. lol "roaring" isnt that easy btw
Such a tony hawk look a like
what song is in the intro?
R.I.T. the 5th track on Dead Throne
thanks bro :)
@disturbedbass49 Yup, you make the best metalcore ever known to man.
Man Jeff Ling and Luke Kilpartrick from Parkway Drive NEED TO DO ONE OF THESE INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO'S!!
I do like these guys, even though i get how generic they are, especially on their old stuff
@Kyonoyes He CAN shred, he just doesn't prefer it xD he likes more melodic and jammy long-held notes :P
0:56 it's NOT an open tuning
@rrplymouth70 Why?
It's an ibanez artist
"That little diddy right there. lol"
@MetalMasochist why? What?
Owned.
Yeah they would
@superbeasstt how do you know for sure? just because they said through some interview? is there any footage or any substantial evidence of them attending church? bands who claim to be christian just say it to make a buck...
how do people make shit like this its epic
guitar is ibanez arz 800 red. good guitar for $800.00
@Spaceysquid Cause people like The Devil Wears Prada
WHY SO MANY DISLIKES??
Chris shreds. I bet he's probably just humble about it
