    I feel like Splatoon 3 is the exception here, they’ve confirmed that it will have all the weapons from Splatoon 2 on release and more, and it actually has significant differences like the Squid Roll, as well as fixing some of the problems with Splatoon 2 like the boring special-spam meta with completely redesigned specials.

    Okay, as a Splatoon veteran from day one, I'm gonna say that Splatoon 3 already looks vastly different from the other installments. The issue is the marketing is making it hard for new players to see the difference. The game has new movement mechanics, new maps, a new hub world, new story, new weapons, all sorts of content that can't be added to splatoon 2 post launch. It's gonna be a whole new experience. But nintendo is bad at making that clear in the trailers.
    Also, I'm okay with Splatoon specifically being part of the whole "continual updates" formula, since it's fundamentally an online multiplayer game. We need updates for new weapons and balance tweaking constantly or else the game will be an unbalanced boring mess. Meta changes are required to happen if they want it to be a real competitive experience. I'd argue it's not the same as Mario Strikers not having all the characters at launch, because that game is way simpler.

    • @Tinco651
      @Tinco651 Год назад +40

    Splatoon using this model works not just because they add new weapons and what not, but they also do special events for a period of time as well.
    Plus its mainly multiplayer, and when they did something kinda big, they did Octo Expansion, which is one of those DLCs that aren't required to have fun the way you were playing originally, but also is a behemoth that costs only $20 if I'm remembering correctly.
    Pokemon Sword and Shield's DLC is the opposite. Specifically locking most players (those without friends) of content needed to get into more competitive team building, lots of older Pokemon, and some new ones, that SHAPE THE META like Regieleki and Urshifu.

    Splatoon is a weird one because a lot of the changes seem small on the surface but a lot of them are actually massive when you take a closer look. The problem is, the only ones who are actually gonna understand the weight of the seemingly smaller changes are the “hardcore” fans of the games, the ones who played it religiously. A good example was how a lot of people said splatoon 1 and 2 felt too similar, but something as simple as having smaller, more close-quarters maps than the first game was enough to be seen as a defining character trait of the second game to its regular player base.
    I think this in particular is just a larger problem with splatoon as a whole: unless you religiously follow the series you have no clue what’s going on or what any of it means.

The 3Ds game has more content than a switch game, let that set in. And Nintendo doesn't even have to update New Horizons anymore, they made their money and don't have to finish the game fully. I was hoping AC:NH would be my favorite in the franchise, but it's the worst and I hate it with a passion. (And this is coming from a long time Animal Crossing fanboy!) The fact alot of new fans first game was New Horizons makes me sad. New Horizons had the worst case of the "Free Updates" thing due to the game not being finished at launch and the type of game it is, It's not like the sport games where you get extra characters, this is where we have MISSING FEATURES AT LAUNCH and are getting them through updates that spread throughout a year! I don't care if the updates are free, a $60 game should be finished at launch like the other ones I bought. Even at the state that New Horizons is in, it's still very unfinished and unpolished. I agree with the sentiment people have been feeling about the recent Mario sports games (arguably the Mario Party games too, but they aren't even being updated), Switch Sports, and so on. It sucks that content-wise the games have been so lacking. Unfortunately, however, people seem to forget that the Mario spinoffs have been in decline (at least on home consoles) since the Wii U (other than Mario Kart 8, which I love aside from its roster). It isn't a new thing for the Switch, it's just that now Nintendo has seen the success of using the update model for Splatoon, Mario Kart, and Smash that now they're trying to do that for all of their multi-player/party games.
    They seem to not realize that the model works on a case-by-case basis. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate launched with an obscene amount of content already so it wasn't really filling in gaps. It was just seen as more on an already complete game. Splatoon was a new IP, and a shooter at that (a genre which the update model is more expected and common). Since the series was new, there was no previous games to compare it to. So when the original game on Wii U utilized this free update strategy, it wasn't seen as bad since it's not like a Splatoon game released on GameCube or Wii with twice as many maps and gear (as opposed to something like a Mario spinoff). The model works for Splatoon and has been there since day 1. New Horizons, however, I think already released with enough content, but I understand people's frustrations with it.

    The only time the DLC and Free Update thing is even sort of fine is when the game can stand on its own with out it.
    Example: Breath of The Wild was a VERY complete game, with plenty of content at launch. So when the DLC was announced, it wasn’t “oh, they are releasing a ‘finish the game’ DLC” it was more like “WOAH, new content in this already complete game I like? SIGN ME THE HECK UP!!!”
    Or in Smash Ultimate, the game was already a complete and fun experience with a whole bunch of characters from over gaming history, and then with the DLC it got MORE characters to play around with, and sometimes even game modes like Stage Creation would be added.
    The Best Way for it to be handled is if they ask themselves “can this stand on it’s own without the Update/DLC? Can I or others enjoy the game even if we don’t get the DLC/Update?”
    If the answer is Yes, then you can move on with the plan.
    If the answer is No, and the game needs updates or DLC in order to feel fun/complete, then probably a good idea to reconsider the plan.
    As Reggie has said, “If it’s not fun, why bother?”

      imo Kirby Star Allies already had solid amount of content, the updates only added old characters (which are almost all OP by the way lol), a new difficulty for the boss rush mode and a new mode. People might find the game bad because of its level design (I don't) but the game still had a fair amount of content.
      Everyone loves Forgotten Land, but I personally didn't like it and it may be my least favorite Kirby Game, sure the 3D is new but in exchange of it we only had 10 (+ Crash (single-use ability) and Sleep which isn't even a real ability) powers where Star Allies had 23 (+ Crash, Festival (single-use), Sleep (still not an ability) and Cook (single-use for Kirby, whole gameplay for allies) and 3 dream friends at launch, with 10 others added with free updates, which makes 37 (+ Crash, Festival and Sleep) gameplays in the game.
      Forgotten land was very restrictive (e.g. can't skip stairs by flying cause they limited the flying height) sure the game is in 3D and needs a little bit of challenge but the others where platformers too and you still could fly as high and as long as you wanted, player two playing Bandana Dee with one of the most boring gameplays they could've made ("B, B, B, repeat", "Dash-B (/Dash Jump B, they're the same), miss, repeat", "hold B, fly, press B again, repeat" and "tackle, A, B" (which doesn't deal damage)) while Kirby gets overpowered upgrades, I played as both Bandana Dee and Kirby, Kirby was fine but Bandana Dee was really frustrating, seeing Kirby anihilate anything while I struggled to do one B B B combo without getting hit because of the end lag. Kirby's abilities were really restricted too, most of them being "B B B", "Dash B" and "Dash Jump B" only or even just "B", the mini-bosses are just meatsacks that you just end up taking damages by touching them cause most of your attacks causes you to move forward.
      All this to say that Kirby Star Allies wasn't that empty (I literally have 75+ hours on the game cause I did every guest star mode with every ally, where I have less than 20 hours on Forgotten Land)

Its definitely a lot more fun playing together with friends, but clearly was not made with singleplayer in mind... meanwhile the forgotten land has a pretty long campaign as well as a second one after you finish the main game, plus lots of fun minigames

    I love it when people talk about this. However I know, I've seen the comments but they're right. Spaltoon is an exception. That works well in context of the games world. New products and music are made every day in the real world. The reason it doesn't work in Animal Crossing and Mario Sports is because there is no excuse other than corporate greed. There's no excuse for thousands od items to be missing from Animal Crossing after launch and even after all updates have been released. And as for Mario Sports, we have had an unbeleieve amount of options in prior games but now they're taking away something we had access to 15 years earlier for zero reason.
    There's also the fact of legacy. Once the servers for these games go offline you will never be able to access this content ever again. What are the people who are interested in retro Nintendo games supposed to do then?
    It's because of this exact reason I haven't bought any game with this release strategy since last year. As soon as I heard Mario Golf was doing it I was fed up and done with this terrible business practice and only bought finished games like Kirby and Pokémon.

    Just some of my thoughts on the topic
    With Splatoon 2 the problem wasn't the "add more content in free updates later" thing, it was that main weapons that were present in Splatoon 1 weren't in Splatoon 2 at launch (such as inkbrush and bamboozler). Nintendo has confirmed however that all main weapons are coming back at launch so this will not be a repeating issue. Splatoon 3 is seemingly missing a hook however (a functionally different argument from saying Splatoon 3 looks too similar to Splatoon 2 in terms of gameplay), and I do hope we get some sort of crazy reveal that proves to be the hook
    I can't really comment on Mario Tennis or Golf since I didn't get those.
    Animal Crossing I didn't really mind it since it was my first Animal Crossing game and it gave me a reason to revisit the game.
    Nintendo Switch Sports, I don't really think the game's incomplete, I think people are just wanting to judge it largely off of nostalgia blindness. Whether we like it or not Miis haven't been a big part of Nintendo's branding seeing as their inclusion in games has been much, much more slim. We may miss this time period, but calling Switch Sports bad because it doesn't satisfy our nostalgia is a bit unfair. The sportsmates are cute and very expressive (though they could use some more facial customizations so everyone doesn't look the same), and the environments are brimming with detail and life. Not to mention HD development takes way more resources than before, so we can't really expect as many sports as Resort had. Nintendo Switch Sports fulfills its role as an easy to pick up party game; is it perfect? No, it could certainly benefit from options like doubles badminton or manually selecting a tennis court, but by any objective metric Wii Sports and wii sports resort aren't that impressive either, we essentially developed Nostalgia blindness to a tech demo (I have a lot of Nostalgia towards it, too).
    I also can't really comment on Strikers since I didn't get it, but if they're only adding characters, it's probably not going to fix the problems with the game and the amount of content it provides (same would go for Tennis and Golf if applicable)

The problem was it was just too short and too easy, the free DLC was Heroes in another dimension, Soul melter EX, and three new dream friends: Taranza, Magolor, and Susie. These two modes actually had a decent amount of challenge, ESPECIALLY the final bosses of each mode. I truly enjoyed the game and I recommend it to anyone who is a casual Kirby fan and kids.

      Yeah…I think Kirby star allies was pretty much finished and it was fun to speculate about the characters coming similar to smash in a way. Even in an interview the director said that heroes in another dimension was just originally extra levels in world 4 that the player could do after beating the main story, implying that it was a dlc and not missing content

    While I agree that it can be annoying at times to have these free dlc updates, I actually kind of think it’s for the better. They only do it for small arcade-like games. The kind that you would normally pick up and play every once in a while, often with friends. Problem is that these games can get old really fast. The new content, while very small, gives people a reason to go back. It definitely feels like this has become more of an excuse though, looking at the minimal characters in Mario Strikers. And the gradual updates of Animal Crossing New Horizons was definitely a terrible decision.

    The sad part is that even Nintendo's third parties are guilty of pulling this "minimal viable product" mindset. Pokemon Sword and Shield for example, claiming that there were technical limitations to include all old Pokemon in the game... then paywalling them behind paid expansions, and finally still leaving several Pokemon behind anyways. There were very few technical changes needed to add a new Pokemon into the code, most of the heavy lifting had been done all the way since X and Y!

I think if they at least finished a game then did something like that then I’d prefer it. I also hope Daisy is in Strikers and I hope that bit about Breath of the Wild 2 is not true. 🤔😭

I thought there would have at least been a free update to add a map or two. This cycle that Nintendo seems to be repeating lately truly sucks.

  • @kittypaisley2029
    @kittypaisley2029 Год назад +4

    I'm a GameCube kid, and while I appreciate Nintendo's earlier games due to nostalgia, the amount of content at launch across generations is roughly equal. The difference is that free content updates have allowed for glitches to be patched out, additional content to be released, and unfortunately the ability for other developers to collect extra money from players. This results in older games being 100% complete forever, and newer games potentially being 100% complete at launch and even more complete after updates and DLC launch. I hope that Nintendo (and other developers, for that matter) use these updates correctly and provide games more complete than games released before the ability to update software.

    Good video, though I gotta say I don't agree with your Splatoon 3 argument.
    They've made it clear that all weapons are returning, some which aren't even that good are getting buffs and adding more to mobility with squid surge etc, that alone is great but you're also forgetting the story and lore in the game, all of this on top of new weapons being added with gimmicks and existing weapons getting plenty of variety, and that's just the battle mechanics, weapons and story, let's not even get into how much customisation options there are.
    Other than that bad point I agree with your video, I just wanna buy a game and get most of the good the previous entries had.

    The difference between Splatoon and the other games you mentions is that the core modes of Splatoon are online. The game needs updates to survive while games like the mario sports games/animal crossing don't really need them as much since the majority of the time you spend with them isn't online. Since splatoon has such a large focus on online the devs have constant updates and events like splatfest to keep people playing. The updates are also alot more frequent as at the peak of Splatoon 2''s updater we got a new weapon a week and new stage monthly. There was always something to look forward too. The system of content works for Splatoon but not the mario sports games. Great video though also I LOVE your art

  • @jacarias287
    @jacarias287 Год назад +3

    What??? No splatoon is a completely different scenario here, the new content keeps the game fresh through its lifecycle and changes the meta of battle, the devs can do their work balancing out the weapons and stuff after release and throughout the games life, splatoon is a specific type of game, its on an online multiplayer shooter, that HOW games in that genre work... you cant put it in this argument.

    The main time I would say that free dlc is ok is when the game is already bulky enough without it. If you play Monster Hunter, most people are fine with their title update structure every few months adding a few new monsters. This is because Monster Hunter games typically have tons of content with free dlc being a hook to get people to come back and for replay value in the future so there's more content if you wish to replay the game.

  • @oneattempt8029
    @oneattempt8029 Год назад

    I feel like what sets splatoon different from the other games that released an incomplete game was that they made the game a 'complete game' very fast and the content we had was so different that we didnt even think twice about "what is this mystery rank mode?" I remember playing the game a a day or two after release and there was only 6 courses and turf war with the only weapons being splatershot, roller, and basic charger, but the difference is that by the end of that week they quickly introduced ranked and many more weapons. At that point the game could have gotten no more updates and while it would be a very basic game, it didn't feel incomplete and everything else was a new bonus. "OH MY GOODNESS A NEW WEAPON CLASS??? WHAT THE HECK IS A BUCKET" but for a game like animal crossing new horizons it wasn't like they gave something that seemed like a complete game and was like "ok brb were gonna get even more things to add to this." Its was more like "ok we only have so much content and we need to ration it out like we're rationing food through the great depression" When I played the game I made it a few months in before sitting there like "...this isn't fun, it feels like a chore to play" and dropped it and never went back and I hate that that's probably going to be the norm of games now since all these games are selling so well. Essentially, just release something that feels like a whole game when it comes out and not after 3 years.

    It's always interesting to see animators develop their animation style over time. Looking at GetMadz's old videos, he has a very basic style, often used by a LOT of animators. But now, he has a very nice and unique style that is uncommon to see on RUclips. Another example is the Odd1sout. It's a little similar to the old version of his character, but it's generally more polished. (There are also moments where the style changes and then changes back and I'm pretty sure those are his other animators.)

    i love animal crossing as a franchise and i love animal crossing new horizons, honestly. i think making the game have so much freedom when it came to island customization was such a great idea and adding in crafting was an even better one, but i CANNOT for the life of me open the game back up. i just feel so burnt out when it comes to it and i think the fact that nintendo held back alot of what was considered cruicial and monumental in the previous games as new "DLC" is apart of that feeling. what upsets me even more is that nintendo literally HAD THE CODE for things like brewsters IN THE MAIN GAME ALREADY but they just decided to release it A YEAR LATER and it overall just makes me feel really sad :(

  • @alvo_Roto

    I feel like their approach to Animal Crossing was good enough because at the begging being able to craft, terraform and decorate your whole island with a huge amount of furniture that weren't in the previous game was enough of a novelty.
    What I think they did very wrong was the rate at which the updates were released. They took several months just to add diving again or the dream suite (kinda) and some holidays here and there. I took one year and a half to get the huge update that actually elevated the game to the same level as New Leaf, but for a lot of people that was, understandably, too late. It should've taken half a year or at least done by Christmas 2020. When they actually did it, most people had enough of the game already.

    Out of the ‘incomplete games at release’ examples, I’ve only purchased Animal Crossing. I don’t regret doing so and that game really REALLY came out at the perfect moment. However, New Horizons was my first and only Animal Crossing game I’ve played (and I assume that was the case for a lot of ppl considering the sales numbers), so all the missing content from previous entries didn’t bother me because I didn’t have any expectations in the first place.
    I definitely agree with you that this sort of ‘release now, update later’ should only be reserved for new IPs, tho I think they should stop doing it outright because in the future those games will not be able to be updated and they will be stuck in their earliest unfinished forms for anyone who gets them after.
