    I'm in no way a martial artist, nor a fighter, but learning a lot on the field of functional fitness (12+ years in the making) - when I hear "you should kick in this angle" makes me giggle, as there are such a great variety of hip joint / femur length / tendon attachment parameters at different individuals, that literally a simple squat works super different between 2 persons, and this also stands for any explosive movements such as jumps, kicks, etc. So I totally relate with the facepalm moment when you talked about these absolutes.

      @THIS---GUY 2 года назад +2

      I personally learn the most from "what if" questions. Nothing is cut and dry I like to cover all areas of a technique and ask on certain application of technique.
      I'm a wrestling coach and love when kids ask what if. It means they're thinking about how to properly use the technique. It helps me guide students in the right direction.
      These questions are best asked at the end of the training or during one on one or small group drills.

    • @remongeurts9335
      @remongeurts9335 2 года назад +1

      @@THIS---GUY I get what you mean and you should definitely do whatever works best for you. My main point is that they want to know all the “what ifs” without even knowing the basic technique. For example when the coach is covering a BJJ technique and this one dude keeps asking “but what if I just punch him” or something like that. Sometimes they ask all these what ifs to kind of debunk a technique without even trying. Also like Seth mentioned, there are no absolutes. Do whatever works best for you.

    • @THIS---GUY
      @THIS---GUY 2 года назад +3

      @@remongeurts9335 I can see how those questions are distracting from the lesson. I always tell my students to save those questions for later in the practice or after but sometimes a good question comes up and we'll stop class to cover something specific and get back to work. That's why I personally ask after the seminar or during rolling after technique.
      I always say there's no stupid questions (there are actually very stupid questions lol) but I always try and cultivate a student's interest and mindset.

    "Don't hit harder than you want to get hit", I feel like this doesn't actually communicate what you followed it up with. What you said is more like, "Don't hit harder than your opponent wants to be hit", which I think is better ettiquette personally. Just because you want to hit hard, doesn't necessarily mean I want to get hit hard having maybe only recently recovered from a concussion. IMO this is the biggest problem with modern martial arts gyms. People are so unaware of how bad it is for you to get klobbered on a daily basis. Love your videos! Peace and love.

    Hey Seth, I just sparred in Muay Thai for the first time last night. I got punched in the face so many times. It was awesome and I learned a lot. The second guy I sparred with worked me over really well and talked with me afterwards. He's a local pro and immediately sussed out my background and spoke to me in a way that made sense based on my own experience. Just another update. I hope you don't hate that I do this.

    Ad.08 - I had a couple of situations in Krav Maga training, when we trained light sparring that was called "forehead, shouders, thighs " - you get a point when you tap other's person forehead et, you get the point.... I was rear-open-hand slapped twice by a trainer and a collegue I was sparring with, and actually I didn't know what to do then, I laughed it off when it was the trainer, that did it, but collegue pissed me off. I felt like it was breaking rules. What would You do? :D It's kinda question about sparring etiquette. And yes - I know it wasn't sparring per se, but still :) It was weird :) Is it normal to beat beginners, when you're a couple of lvls above them?

      @@sparkyy2890 Yes, that's what I meant. At least leaving my own body. Definitely not in the habit anymore. Though I do understand that it's also a fidget thing or 'not being sure what to do with ones hands' thing when out of their comfort zone... it does come across as disrespectful, for sure, during class.
