Thank you for this review. BEST review I've seen for this movie: That opening in the crypt (and the opening credits) always drew me in as a kid. Seeing it later on DVD in the '00's without commercials always left me a bit confused. Growing up, I enjoyed the two-hour blocks on Creature Features on a Saturday night that this move took up. The DVD views always left me thinking, "What did they cut out? It was better in the '70's." I appreciate learning why Bela Lugosi's monster stumbles around with his mouth moving and no sounds coming out while looking for the secrets of life and death book.
Thank you for the kind words. That opening is just perfect--it's my standard for Cool Creepy Cemeteries. When I saw FMTWMfor the second time, in my twenties, they simply CUT the discovery of the monster--one of the two best scenes! The Lugosi situation is baffling to me--why didn't they just loop his dialogue with another actor? It really hurts the movie.
It's great to see some love for these classic Universal horror movies. Sure, some are better than others, but I'll take even the not so good ones over 95% of the rubbish Hollywood makes today. Great channel. Best wishes from England.
It's mine, too, after BRIDE. So many of the B movies I love are messy--churned out. But they were churned out by TALENTED people. I think this one sucks, but it's got such good stuff in it.This may not make sense, but it's how I feel. (A Universal sleeper: NIGHT MONSTER.)
A movie I loved as a kid was That Touch of Mink, with Doris Day and Cary Grant. A couple of years ago I decided to watch it again, having not seen it since childhood. I settled in to enjoy this charming, funny, frothy romance that I remembered so very fondly, and it was.... terrible. An awful movie. Like you, I regretted watching it again. I would have much preferred living with a lovely memory. Some things from childhood are best left unrevisited.
You gotta tread lightly on your memories, right? At the time of first watching, it was probably just what your mind needed, what you were open to. But we grow in our tastes.
You rewatch this movie and the damn song is stuck in your brain for months. That the guy looks like Salvador Dali's brother the meth head just makes it nuttier. He's scarier than the freakin wolfman.
@ Well, he does look a bit deranged with those wide eyes and creepy smile but I have to admit I enjoy that scene. Plus he gets to piss off the wolfman in a hilarious fashion 😂 And now I feel the need, the need for faroli..…..🎵”Tonight we toast our happy host, farola faroliiii”🎶 Peace, y’all!
Imagine being among the first to see Frankenstein in the theater. Must've been truly terrifying. But familiarity breeds contempt and all that. We love them for their entertainment value, which they've still got.
@@haha-kq6rz oh, i love all of them. the series starters and early on movies are truly great films; very important to the history of horror. the sequels starting with this film are a lot of fun! i really wish they had done more one monster meets another before jumping into the monster rallies. i do find the karloff mummy film to be rather dull, but it is very well shot. i enjoy the little b-movie sequels very much.
I grew up a universal monster's kid and I still am. I even paint universal monster paintings and sculpt Universal monster sculptures. Because I love them so much. I like having them all around me. Call me sick, but I love um
Flash Gordon (The one with the soundtrack by Queen), Tron Legacy, and Speed Racer. Three movies I get a lot of flak for loving. Don't care. Love them anyway.
FLASH is loads of fun--its in the same vein as FIFTH ELEMENT. TRON LEGACY looks amazing (love the music, too). But it should've been called BASIC STORY OUTLINE. SPEED RACER I need to see again when I'm more open to it--its like having a liquified pinball machine poured over your eyeballs.
I only wish that they got Glenn Strange for the monster instead of the silly looking Bela. Same with Ghost of Frankenstein. Glenn, where were you when they needed you!!
I've long insisted that the first shot of the monster in the ice is Glenn Strange (even though I've never read of any researcher making that claim). Strange had the correct presence for the role.
I’ve come to the conclusion that any and every film with “VS” in the title is very rarely done well and made solely for leave your brain at the door, popcorn munching entertainment. Add to the fact that universal studios 1940 film franchises are not exactly the go to cornerstone for good, relevant continually. Thanks for posting. 😅
"Vs." or "Meet" in the title guarantees you're seeing Product. I do like it when a director takes advantage of the studio seeing a movie as just part of a franchise, and they do something wacky or daring. Doesn't happen a lot, but the results can be interesting (even subversive).
All those old shows and movies that I loved and thought were good, aren't the same as when I was young. The real McCoys, my mother the car and the rest were good at the time and that's all we had and all we knew. Times has changed and so has entertainment.
Sure--I wish more people would get over their childhood loves. If you don't mature in your tastes, you lose out on so much. So much entertainment is meant to be disposable--one watch, you enjoy, you move on to something more sophisticated.
Don’t care if it’s bad ! I love this movie !!

Thank you! And I agree. I've seen this one more than once--even with its flaws it has some really great moments.
what are you talking about ? frankenstein meets the wolfman is my all time favorite movie musical! that burgermeister can really belt one out!
He'd really let himself go by the time he appeared as the Burgomeister Meisterburer in "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town."
Faro-la, faro-li!
I also loved this movie as a kid!!
Still my second favorite of the universal monster sequels. Behind Son of Frankenstein.

All those old Frankenstein movies were actually pretty stupid, but we love them anyway. Audiences were more forgiving in those days.

frankenstin, bride of frankenstein and son of frankenstein are all great movies.
@@johnrunion5357 All the Universal Frankenstein movies are wonderful, regardless of how stupid and formulaic they are.

Well, if it's here I loved it, so welcome, you're among friends. :)
well when I was growing up it was better than the regular programming from the 60s and 70s and I still enjoy it to this day
That's why I love these movies--they may not be scary, but they're different, and that oddness continues.
I enjoyed your pop culture inserts!
It was one of Jean Rollin's favorite films.
If I ever directed a movie I'd be trying to be Kubrick and would end up like Jean Rollin, with more lesbianism.
I love it, i like lugosi as yhe monster
Even with his dialog cut, he has an awkward strangeness.

@UpInTheAtticJSW Gil Perkins was the stunt double for Bela for the ice scene and the fight scene at the end of Frankenstein meets the Wildman
I mean the wolf man
The monster met the wolf man not Frankenstein

@UpInTheAtticJSW agreed! 😆👍
Caddyshack (1980) is one of those films for me, loved it as a kid but as an adult I find it quite boring and mediocre.
Comedy is the quickest aging of genres.
Wolfmen don't die by splattering tho! Don't you remember The Monster Squad? They got, WOLVERINE Levels of Regeneration from being blown up!
I always wonder, where does this power to keep going come from? WOLVES don't have this ability--why does a werewolf?
@UpInTheAtticJSW Simple my friend: Moon Magic.

I loved this movie as a kid, but yeah... it's pretty bad.😂 I love a lot of bad movies.
It's bad, but I still love it. As the great philosopher Homer J. Simpson said, "I can't stay mad at you."
