one of the most underrated movie ever. Despite it has come out in movie theater at the same time of the LotR, this movie should have been considered much more. Absolutely epic
I remember watching this film randomly and going into it with absolutely no expectations and just being completely blown away by the film visuals, the soundtrack and just the general feel of the whole experience! It is one of the few times that has ever happened to me!
I feel so mad about this soundtrack didn't get an Oscar. I understand the competitors were huge in that year, it was just unfair. In this soundtrack Hans Zimmer did a job beyond words.
totally agree, they should make Oscar prices for past movies that society recognise as memorable master pieces. Totally underrated movie... but maybe this has a meaning. Like the centuries-old samurai fashion, that suddenly disappeared with the modern age advent, this move recall the ephemeral feeling of a sakura flower, Beautiful but quick. A short moment that has to be enjoyed because you watch and feel it, not because it is a famous thing.
I just visited my best friend in the hospital who is dying of cancer to say my last goodbye... It's a flood of emotions... And now I just want to be in such a place, in a field with a breeze, to reflect and find my inner peace... Goodbye my friend. It was an honor and a privilege to share some of the best moments of our lives. Watch over us...

This is easily my favorite yet. Braveheart and Gladiator are legendary masterpieces of film history in the last 34 years, but Last Samurai is easily in my top 3 favorites of all time. I must have listened to the score more than a thousand times for my ambience will writing and now thanks to you, I can do the same, but with less awareness that I'm listening to a series of tracks and instead to a seamless masterpiece. Thank you!!

I think you are really on to something. Since modern movies are so terrible, the only place of enjoyment is on cinema from the past. There are thousands of movies that you could create this type of ambiance to. I download and listen to this like my other Itunes songs. Seems only fair to chip in something. Je décrirai le film du "Dernier Samouraï" par la recherche du "moi" supérieur. (Meilleur version de soi-même) On voit des moments intenses en émotion quand il souffre de son addiction à l'alcools et dans le même temps la recherche du "Pardon" d'avoir hotté la vie du mari de la femme qui lui sauve la vie, de son addiction. Il y a un autre moment qui m'a marqué, juste avant de tuer le samouraï avec un moyen pour le moins inattendu, un drapeau avec un tigre flottant dans le vent ... Cela nous apprends l'humilité face à tout adversaire et en l'occurrence plus faible que soi car on va être honnête, les chances de survies du soldat avec son drapeau face au Samouraï est de l'ordre de 7 contre 1, voir plus. J'apprécie aussi quand les samouraïs font des paris sur le soldat pendant son apprentissage au Katana. C'est un film hors du commun !! Ceux qui ont créer ce film leur ont fait honneur ! La preuve je m'en souvient encore. Comme si c'était hier 😉 Avec respect et humilité. 🤫🥰🙏🙏🙏

In subsequent years, however, the film has been criticized for its romanticization of Japanese and samurai culture, ignoring of crucial aspects of the Meiji Restoration, and adherence to the white savior trope, in which a white hero plays a crucial role in the liberation of non-white characters. Examples of this trope can be found in films such as Dangerous Minds, in which a white teacher enters an underprivileged school of minority students , or Dances with Wolves, which sees a jaded lieutenant in Union Army become part of the Sioux nation and help them fight both their Pawnee enemies and the invading American military.
In an interview with The Guardian, Watanabe speaks in defense of The Last Samurai, pushing back against its perceived use of the white savior trope. The actor conversely sees the movie as progression in Hollywood's portrayal of Asians on screen, and a step in the right direction following decades of overtly racist depictions.

My thoughts:
What might be said is that many Japanese people wanted to support the emperor and end the shogunate because the feudal system exploited them. They saw clinging to the old ways as making Japan vulnerable to European powers in the same way Qing Dynasty China was. Embracing the emperor and modernization was a way to change the country for the better relative to the West and promote Japanese nationalism and culture all at the same time.
If anyone mourned the end of "traditional" Japan, it was displaced Japanese daimyo and their samurai and the West. The fact that the 19th century American cowboy and the last Japanese samurai overlapped in time means that is very easy for Americans to romanticize this period by finding shared themes between the last samurai and the closing of the American western frontier.
