I was just thinking ... at 2:19, when he says Mulan's "unsuited for the rage of war," it looks in the movie like he's actually saying he's going to send her back home. If that's the case, Mulan could have just kept her head down and gone back home, having accomplished her original mission (to protect her father). She went ahead with it from there anyway purely because she chose to.
