    I tried this method, cutting the anthers off and dropping them in the pistil but that flower aborted. What I ended up doing is just holding a postcard underneath the flower and brushing off a pile of the pollen and just dumping the pollen on the pistil and that one formed a fruit.

    Thank-you for all your informative dragon fruit videos! Do you know how long collected pollen will last for in the refrigerator? Pollen collection would be important for gardeners that only have a small amount of plants and would want it to last as long as possible during the flowering period.

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  6 лет назад +1

      Chris Brown I've read that the pollens will last one month if frozen although I have not proven this through my on dragon fruit planting. I still have pollens from last year's flowers frozen that I intend to use for the first flower of this coming flowering cycle. Cheers.

      Chris Brown I also read that pollens are good for one week if kept in the refrigerator. Thank you for watching.

      Hello. I usually wait like 9 pm at night to pollinate. Some flowers will bloom later after that so I'll check those flowers early in the morning and pollinate them that time. This method has worked for me. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers

    So hand pollinated dragon fruit variety can never become self pollinated right????

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  2 года назад +1

      Hello. If a dragon fruit variety is the fertile kind then there is a chance it can become autogamous or what is referred to as self pollinating. A fertile variety becomes autogamous when the stigma is already touching the anther or they are at the same distance from the center of the flower that as the flower closes/wilts the stigma and the anther will touch each other ensuring pollination. Thank you for your question and thank you for watching. 👍😊👍 Cheers

    Thank you my friend, that was very interesting, it explains why all my flowers had dropped off. I’ll be sure to collect and freeze pollard in readiness for next season. As there are so many varieties of dragon fruit, is there a way to determine one variety from another? The only clue I have is that my variety has white fruit, and the leaves are big and solid with spikes. Regards Peter of Shoalwater, Western Australia.

    • @sackboymahalo
      @sackboymahalo  5 лет назад +1

      Hello. Although I collect and freeze pollens I see to it that whenever there are flowers that have bloomed and are ready for pollination that I first collect fresh pollens from all those flowers then I mix it with the frozen pollens before I start to do hand pollination. I don't know how viable are the frozen pollens but with the mixture of the newly collected fresh pollens chances of pollination occurring is greatly increased.
      This link might help you determine varieties: ucanr.edu/sites/sdsmallfarms/files/219663.pdf It is great to hear from somebody from Shoalwater, Western Australia. Greetings from San Diego, California. Thank you for your comment and thank you for watching. Cheers.

      Yes like pollens from red or white flesh varieties that I have. This is referred to as "cross pollination " and doing this process increases the chance of producing larger size fruits. I hope this answers your question. Thank you for watching. Cheers.
