+Jamie or James or Jim Price And based on one of the greatest crime book ever written "No Beast So Fierce" by Eddie Bunker. I think that and "The Big Nowhere" by Ellroy are my favourites.
One of the most interesting & realistic crime movies ever made. Mesmerizingly human story. With superb casting all around. And personally, Dustin Hoffman best performance ever. Max Dembo: Brains & Balls.
this is a fabulous movie. great character study. I'd really like to see what he did and where he went for the past number of decades. a new flick should be made showing what happened all those years and where this character is today... still a bad ass.
A good film with great acting from Dustin and his co stars reflecting the complex dynamic of coming out of prison and navigating the parole system. The principle character has a strong sense of personal moral rules yet they mainly lie at odds with society's rules and thus he has a Shakespearian tragic flaw which dooms his attempts to re-integrate society. His parole officer exemplifies many in the carceral system who singularly lack compassion and understanding yet Hoffman's character is arguably not fit to live in freedom. A lingering question left unresolved is if he had had a more humane parole officer could he have gone straight. Teressa Russel puts in a compelling performance as a romantic young woman ready to support a man who does not meet any of the standards extolled by the society in which he lives except for ruthlessness and self assertion. @@marcscraigslist_account8297 that is your only contribution to a substantive commentary on a serious film? English is my third language. How many languages do you speak?
@stevemorse108 I speak two languages. And for what it's worth, I am not as eloquent or as well-written as you. I figured a skilled writer would want to be made aware of misusing a word. Perhaps I was wrong.
Hoffman was fascinated by Edward Bunker and spent a lot of time with him preparing for this role.
Edward Bunker saying that he has no guts. Even he could barely keep a straight face when he said that line.
One of the greatest films of all time

I saw that movie when it first came out, great movie. Dustin Hoffman played a hard core ex con.

You're not Wrong!!!
No Beast So Fierce should be required reading.

NO ONE knows about this film and it's SOOOOOOO good.
No, I didn't know about it, but I sure knew about Bunker! Gotta watch it.
Here's another great one that "nobody" knows about: "And Then You Die".
He was in Runaway Train and Reservoir Dogs . Always a ex con .
He was GREAT as Jonah
Art imitating life...
Bunker was GREAT as Jonah
Bunker sure has more bad ass charisma than Hoffman.
Hoffmann one helluva an actor...same guy as Tootsie Rainman and Graduate...lots of range...unreao
Why with all Maxs connections did he ended up using junkie face Gary Busie for a driver?
And they also leave unresolved what happened to Gary Buseys character. We have no idea what happened to him after Max Denbo shot him.
Preston Castle brought me here, fascinating stories
A good thief for his age.

@@marcscraigslist_account8297 it just sounds a bit pedantic. I would be I retested in your thoughts on the film and it my comments about it.
