A good film with great acting from Dustin and his co stars reflecting the complex dynamic of coming out of prison and navigating the parole system. The principle character has a strong sense of personal moral rules yet they mainly lie at odds with society's rules and thus he has a Shakespearian tragic flaw which dooms his attempts to re-integrate society. His parole officer exemplifies many in the carceral system who singularly lack compassion and understanding yet Hoffman's character is arguably not fit to live in freedom. A lingering question left unresolved is if he had had a more humane parole officer could he have gone straight. Teressa Russel puts in a compelling performance as a romantic young woman ready to support a man who does not meet any of the standards extolled by the society in which he lives except for ruthlessness and self assertion. this is a fabulous movie. great character study. I'd really like to see what he did and where he went for the past number of decades. a new flick should be made showing what happened all those years and where this character is today... still a bad ass.
