    Just did this yesterday. Car wouldn't start and after bimmerfest diagnosis... I figured it was the fuel pump. This video was awesome. Saved me so much cash and brought me greater understanding of my car..just awesome!

    Did this yesterday with the help of this video. Many thanks! A tip for the guys reading here. My fuel filter “failed” last year and the symptoms of both failures were similar; Give gas and no joy and engine eventually turns off. Fuel filter being clogged caused the pump get noisy, just a FIY. Symptoms for the fuel filter failing was engine shudder periodically during low rpm and idle, often after starting the car again after doing a store run.

    Great step, by step video. I was having issues reinstalling the sending unit until I remembered you installed the rubber gasket on the tank before seating the fuel level unit. I did not remove the seat back, before starting, I have a 525i and there was lots of room to work. Once again, great video.

    Test the system. Resting voltage should be around 12.2-12.4 volts. When the car is running the voltage should be between 13.8 and 14.4 volts. If you're within this range I wouldn't worry about it. You can also test fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve at the fuel rail. You should be around 50PSI with the engine running. If you are within these ranges I wouldn't worry about it too much. If anything, I would siggest replacing the fuel filter as a precaution.

    Great tutorial - saved me about $600 in labor and parts (I replaced the pump and reused the assembly) on my 2001 540i.
    Coincidentally, once I got everything swapped out and buttoned up, I turned the ignition, and *CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK*. I could hear the fuel pump whirring when the key was at the 2 position, but the lights (interior and exterior) would dim at each click and the engine wouldn't turn. I thought I might have had a sizeable air bubble in the fuel line since I lost quite a bit of fuel when I disconnected the line from the sending unit, or that my tank was so low I was starving the fuel pump once I swapped it out, but it ended up being a bad battery with a bad cell. I was only getting about 11.5V with the accessories off and under 10 when cranking. Turns out my alternator issues earlier this year had crippled my battery. Luckily, it was 2 years and 9 months old and still covered under warranty, so I swapped that out and now we're up and running beautifully. Thanks!

    It wouldn't hurt, our tank was about half-full (or half-empty if you're a pessimist) and we didn't have any trouble. You probably don't want to be sticking your hands deep into a full tank though.

    Just did my fuel sending unit left side. Not to bad, but I got stuck at one point. I tried putting the rubber seal on the cap first but was unable to get the metal ring started. Then I remembered you putting the seal in the tank opening first. Your tip saved me, thanks.

    Thanks for the video. It was easy to follow and didn't have brutalizing music in the background.
    FWIW, it was a bit of a fight to get the housings to set down well into the new O-rings. On the driver's side, the second side I did, I sprayed a little silicone lubricant on a shop towel and wiped it around the bottom of the housing where it fits inside of O-ring. Worked like I charm. Settled in like butter. I re-did the passenger side, as I didn't like the way it fought the O-ring. I figured it could have rolled it as it was forced through. The silicone spray on the rag helped a lot. Cheers.

    Car started for a few seconds then stopped and would not start. I pulled out the fuel pump in pieces. Not only had all the rubber pieces started disintegrating in the black plastic pump mount, they fell into the gas. The pump was free of the black plastic housing and had torn the hose to the sender.
    When I changed my fuel filter, I had an idea to hook up my fuel transfer pump to the fuel line where it attaches to the filter input and started draining the tank. All kinds of #$%^^ came out so now I have some 15 gallons of contaminated gas.
    Putting the new pump in took a lot of effort. I found it finally worked by directing the internal gas line to the right, then double back to the left to help get it out of the way. The top sender unit piece is a precision fit, on top of it already being spring loaded from underneath. When you finally get it lined up and ready for the big ring, you have to hold it in place and let the ring fully seat it. I pulled the ring back off after tightening and the sender lid was fully seated and sealed.

    The fuel pump would turn on with the key in position 2. I have had an ongoing issue with poor performance especially with heavy throttle (basically felt like the car was shutting down). I tested fuel pressure at the Schroeder valve on the fuel rail and found that it read at a mere 10-15PSI (engine off). The fuel pressure regulator was fine which meant that the fuel pump itself was not physically moving enough fuel. Fuel pressure returned to within spec after the fuel pump was replaced.

What else could it be ? There was nothing wrong with anything before we did it we just happened to have the fuel assembly on hand were thinking mabie it shocked the pump and now we have to replace the pump? The pump does make a little sound for one second when I put the key in . Please tell me what u have for my car or suggestions

    Will this be the same for a 1998 540i. Getting sputtering at acceleration. Now getting misfire codes. Also got a misfire code for tank being run dry but it had about 40 miles to empty. Its been driving bad and sputtering lightly for 2 weeks, only at acceleration. Couldn't figure it out but the code saying the tank ran dry might help. Any thoughts. Great video. I did the level sensor on the driver side. My thought is to do the fuel pump and level sensor at the same time since I'm in there.

    Why not replace pump with assembly? wouldnt that be easier and you wouldnt have to mess with wiring?
    Did you depressurize? I was told a good method is to disco power from the pump and then start car - will depressurize . Or is this not really necessary? ABout to try and worried that im gonna make a gasoline mess.

    Just tried this, got everything in just need to seal it down. I'm having trouble trying to get that white piece back in, after re watching the video I noticed you put the seal down first then pressed the cap on top of it? Does it make it easier to go in when the gasket seal is at the bottom then pressing the cap over it ? Thanks

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  9 лет назад

      Porter Filmz It was much easier to seat the gasket first and then put the top of the sending unit in place. The lock ring that seals the top of the sending unit to the fuel tank will press it into the seal making for an air tight seal. It's just cumbersome to put the gasket on the sending unit and try to put it into place.

    I was actually hoping you'd replace the pump itself out of its plastic "harness". I need to replace mine as the back-pressure valve failed and that one is inside the pump itself. Any hints?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  8 лет назад +1

      Unfortunately, the effort involved in replacing the pump insert in the plastic hanger/basket is a delicate procedure. The plastic becomes very brittle after being submerged in fuel and will likely break trying to release the pump insert. If the plastic were to break you'll then have to order an entire assembly which is only available from BMW. If you are attempting to install a new insert be extremely careful when removing the original pump. There are plastic retainers that secure the pump in place.

    • @michaelXXLF
      @michaelXXLF 8 лет назад

      Hmm, thanks for the warning! Guess I'll have to see what happens.

    • @michaelXXLF
      @michaelXXLF 8 лет назад +1

      I am glad to to be able to tell you that the plastic cage holding the fuel pump on a '97 E39 is not the least bit brittle, it is pretty tough actually. You need three flat screwdrivers and quite a bit of fumbling to get the pump out. Problem is you can't push the pump and you can't really pull either because there is nowhere to pull and there are three screwdrivers in the way ...

    Nice one Gareth.
    What are the signs that the pump has failed?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  9 лет назад +1

      +Musonda Kapatamoyo Best way to figure out if a fuel pump has failed is to test that there is power at the sending unit connector/harness when the key is in accessory mode. The fuel pump is supposed to prime when the key is in POS2. If there is voltage at the connector but the pump will not turn on it has failed. If there is no voltage at the connector for the sending unit I would check other electrical items such as the fuel pump relay first. Additionally, a failed crank position sensor will prevent the fuel pump from turning on as well but you will have a code for an open circuit on a failed crank sensor.

    Great video. I have a 1998 BMW 540i (147,000 miles). I have some gas leaking on the access panel to fuel tank on the drivers side under the rear seat. I'm going to replace that rubber ring and hopefully that will fix the leak. Sometimes when I start my car lately, it will die within 1-2 seconds. It usually will start back up. Would that be the fuel pump or sending unit? Is it the exact same process on both sides? Thanks.

      @fcpeuro  8 лет назад

      The leak is likely due to a bad seal on on the access cover. The car starting and then dying quickly could be a few possibilities. Does this happen when the tank is full or while it is below half a tank. The process is basically the same for the left and right side. The only difference is the right side of the rank has a fuel transfer sucking pump but that does not interfere with any replacement of the pump or level sending unit.

      It died once today and the tank is 3/4 full. Don't remember the other times where the gas was. It has happened about 8 times in the last 3 weeks. I ordered a new seal today. I have been smelling gas for about 2 months now, usually when I fill up with gas then it goes away after a day or two. Only one side is leaking that I see, do you recommend doing both sides or just wait until the other side starts to leak? Any ideas what might be causing it to die right after it starts? I think I understand, both sides have a pump and sending unit, the right just has an additional transfer sucking pump?

      @fcpeuro  8 лет назад

      +MRXCHRISS It could be due to the fuel tank leak. It's a pressurized system. However, it could also potentially be caused by other things such as a bad fuel pressure regulator, clogged fuel filter, etc. It's basically impossible to say what the problem could be with certainty without diagnosing the car in person as there are many variables. The sucking jet pump which transfers fuel to the right side of the saddle tank is likely not the issue if it's happening regardless of how much fuel is in the tank.

    How can I tell if the pump is bad

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  2 года назад

      The vehicle will not start and or have a hard time starting. You can also jump the fuel pump relay with the engine off, and listen to see if the pump kicks on and sounds healthy. You can also use a power probe to bench test the pump.

    Gareth, I replaced the fuel pump 2000 528I. Now when the car is going uphill the car begins to sputter and sometimes die. Any thoughts?

      +gr8day42 Does this happen when you have a full tank of gas or below half a tank of gas? I have a couple of possible answers for you but first need to know the condition in which it occurs.

    • @gr8day42

      +FCP Euro It happens when there is half a tank or less.

    That's not the fuel tank. It's the rear passenger commode.

    Question: is the fuel pressure regulator located close to the fuel filter in an '01 530i (E39)? If not where would it be? Thanks !!

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  7 лет назад

      Yes. In fact, the fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel filter on a 2001 530i. When replacing the fuel filter you will be default be replacing the fuel pressure regulator.

      FCP Euro i appreciate the reply. I just ordered a new fuel filter. My mechanic said I have low fuel pressure. After installing a new fuel pump and checking all fuses, aside from the fuel filter, what else can cause low fuel pressure?

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  7 лет назад

      There are a variety of things that can cause a low fuel pressure condition. However, the easiest place to start generally is with the fuel filter as they are often not replaced regularly and can restrict fuel flow significantly when they get clogged. There are some mechanical related components that can cause fuel pressure to drop such as leaky injectors but that requires further testing.

      There are a few places to look. For a car to start you need three things: air, fuel, and spark. The first place to ensure that the fuel pump is in fact actually working. When you turn the key to position 2 you should hear a "whirring" sound coming from under the passenger seat. If you do not hear the duel pump priming you will need to inspect the fuel pump relay in right side of the trunk above the battery. If the relay is not working or is faulty it will prevent the fuel pump from turning on. In fact, it is normally recommended to replace the fuel pump relay when installing a new fuel pump for good measure.
