Depends on how close you are to the epicenter, the type of earth under you, the buildings's structure. I lived in San Francisco during the 7.1 earthquake in 1989 (on my birthday of all days) Most buildings built on bedrock were ok. Many of those in the Marina neighborhood which is not on bedrock collapsed and sank into the ground.
It's because (1) strict earthquake-resistant building codes, and (2) Japan has big earthquakes so often, anything not capable of withstanding it already collapsed in a quake decades ago. And was rebuilt stronger. @@kzhemh Epicenter was 12 mi away from the nearest major city, 17 mi below the surface. 1989 quake was 56 mi from San Francisco (10 mi from Santa Cruz), 11 mi below the surface. It should have been a non-issue for SF, except most of the city was built on landfill. (Similar problem happened with the 1985 mag 8.1 Mexico City quake. Epicenter was 220 mi away, 20 mi deep. But Mexico City is built on a dry lake bed which liquefied.)
First time see airport or airline staff give out blankets to stranded passengers. Japan customer service always one step above. Here in America? No staff will care that you sleep on the floor. You’re lucky to even see a staff

Thank you all for showing your support for Japan and leaving your heartfelt comments on this channel. The highway you see in the livestream is one of the designated evacuation areas in Uwajima City. While it’s not visible from this camera angle, there are emergency stairs to climb up to the highway. In the center of the screen, Kisaiya Hiroba Park is one of the main tourist spots where you can shop and enjoy Uwajima’s beloved local foods like "Taimeshi" (sea bream rice bowl) and "Jakoten" (fried fish cake made from small fish). As you can see, the bay is very close to the tourist spot, and there are more businesses and residential areas nearby. When the Nankai Trough Earthquake occurs, the tsunami waves could reach this area in less than 50 minutes, not just once but potentially multiple times throughout the day.
