Interesting comparison & both great cameras with their different strengths and features. One thing you missed with frame rates - the R5C can shoot up to 120p 3K raw in cropped super 16 mode.
That is interesting. I have an R5C and discovered this feature thanks to you. I'm still confused why Canon has 4K 120 fps (XF-AVC) in full-frame and 3K 120 fps (RAW) in super16, but there's nothing for Super35 past 60 fps for any settings. I would think that it would be easier to do a cropped slow motion than full frame.
Apparently 4K full frame 120 is line skipped. Still looks fine to me but it's not as processor intensive as oversampled in the other non raw modes. I'm guessing super 35 oversampled or raw modes are too many pixels for the processor to handle beyond 60p whereas super 16 is approximately half that number of pixels.
@@csound55 Yeah. I get that logic. R5C definitely can't do Super35 oversampled because then it would have to read the sensor faster than the highest raw output. 60 is the ceiling for raw/oversampled. But, my thinking is, if it can do line-skipped 120 in full-frame, why can't it do it for Super35? Usually, for other manufacturers, it's easier to do cropped slow-mo, so the absence in this camera seems unusual. Don't get me wrong, I'd prefer 120 in full-frame than Super 35, but why not both?
Thanks for this one, Josh! Looking at shooting a micro feature on one of these soon! Surprised at the similarity in color. Arguable you could even use them together with a little color grading!
Nice one Josh, well put together as always. A hell of a lot of work went into this video! Look at how clean the R5C is at high ISO's. Believe it or not, I was filming a Cellist in an old church recently in very low light and it was the first time since owning the R5C, that I raised the ISO to over 3200. The footage looked great at 6400 and 12800.
cool comparison video, thank you! as an R5C owner I find the quick one touch C70/R5C menu most similar to the BM menu system but there are limits to what it offers
This is a brilliant comparison, thanks Josh! I thing i think you missed, the S35 crop mode on the BM, it has 4k 50p at 4:3 and 17:9, which i think is super interesting. I currently own the BM and an R6, but looking to upgrade the R6 to the R5C, I wanted to see if they'd match and looks like they do :)
Well done. I've always thought the Black Magic had a really good look. Nice colors. Clean. I'm happy to see the R5c held it's own. I just shot a job with an R5c and it's pretty dang easy to get a nice product from it. I think the cost value and the result you get for the studio usage the BM is great. You don't move around that much. Stays in focus well. Is B-Raw that good? Seems everyone likes to use it. Kinda like RED raw? I don't have any issues with Canon codecs but I also don't swim in other pools.
Thanks Scottie! BRAW is really nice to edit, especially in Resolve. It's not quite R3D but very good. If Canon and their codecs are working for you then that's all that actually matters.
Hi Josh, if you ever get your hands on a Red Komodo X it would be awesome to see it vs the R5C. I'm considering adding the Komodo X with my R5C and c70 since it has the RF mount. Thanks for the time and effort you put into these videos, I just subbed and going to go back through your archives.
thinking of getting one. I have a question. I know that it has the same features of the R5 for photography... is the autofocus system of the R5c in Photo mode the same as the r5...? Thanks!
@@Serson hey man thanks! I was asking because some ppl told me that the R5 was better... to be honest I don't know if the latest firmware updates changed that for the R5c making the autofocus identical or not. I am planning to use the R5c for both video and also nature and wildlife.
Thanks for making these vids. The BM full frame is absolute magic at 400 iso. Beyond that - it falls flat. I have one. Working with support as not sure if it’s a bad unit or just poorly tested before release and all units out there have unusable higher iso use. Even at 1250 it gets noisy shadows.
It was such an elaborate comparison. Absolutely loved it, man. Just a bit of confusion regarding the indoor shot at 5:23, this is the raw ungraded clip, right? So, here the noise refers to the noise we see in the RAW file when interpreted in Clog2, correct? Or did you interpret it in clog3?
Great video, can I ask you a question. I really wanna buy the 6k full frame and use it mainly on a tripod. How bad is it without image stabilization? Will it get shaky on a tripod? Thank you for your time
thank you very much, another question I have is I'd like to buy the bmcc 6k to film myself making pottery on the potter's wheel. would manual focus work since I don't move a lot. @@Josh_Sattin
I keep seeing this camera pop up on every comment section of every other camera comparison. I used to own one and the image was magic. Something special about it. I think this is a sign. I've been battling back and forth with a 6k full frame or r5c. I can essentially buy multiple used FPs for the price of just one of those cameras
Curious to know if you did in camera black balance with the R5C before shooting the exposure tests? I find it can help a bit to reduce chroma noise in the shadows.
Blackmagic really dropped the ball on this camera. Limited frame rates, bad low light, horrible rolling shutter, bad form factor, no internal ND, and the list just goes on and on....and I love Blackmagic! I really hope the new URSA Full Frame will be better
So happy to watch this comparison. And glad you included RAW w the R5C (some RUclipsrs don’t and defeats the point of the comparison). Great video!
Thanks for watching!

It would be huge if Canon enabled Open Gate in the R5C, even taking a hit in resolution or framerate.

Both look good but the blackmagic looks better. Very impressive if you see the price.

The R5C 8K raw is interpreted as Clog2 in the NLE.

It's a pity that you didn't have Sigma FP on the study.

I love Blackmagic usually, however the CANON R5C just looked better in most of these shots.
Would these cameras work well together in a two camera interview setup?
I bet you could get that to work if you are using lenses in the same family. There is a good amount of flexibility with BRAW.
Curious to know if you did in camera black balance with the R5C before shooting the exposure tests? I find it can help a bit to reduce chroma noise in the shadows.
Yes, I did the ABB in the R5C and the calibration in the Blackmagic.
6k has gyro data that davinci can Read and stabilize and it also removes rolling shutter .
And obviously you end up with a slight crop
Ping thinks the R5c is garbage doo doo … Ping has spoken
