9:50 - I recommend putting a lantern on the ledge next to the handbrake. It’s perfectly positioned to allow the lantern light to make the sight glass a lot easier to read.
Generally if I’m running the S282, I’ve got lanterns on _at least_ both the rear shelves in the S282, and usually one on the front shelf too (when it doesn’t fall off). Of course, the three-lantern game limit does make things difficulty if I ever need to run multiple locos …

    • @bowser5678

I usually put two lanterns on the tender, one for each side so I can read pretty much everything inside the cab.

One lantern on the tender is the bare minimum. Three, with two on the tender and one above the throttle is optimum. Two is decent, and either placement for the second will work

Every time I'm at the steel mill and need cash, I'll take jobs back and forth between steel mill and goods factory.
All the track is 50+, most of it has no speed limit. and there's almost always jobs going in between. and can be done in under 10 minutes a piece.
It's actually where I did most the testing for the Pennsy F3.

Yo, Hyce! You don't have to leave flashlight outside if you don't want to. Lay them LED's/bulbs on the shelf in a cab and it will recharge just fine. It's more convinient way- you can always pick it up, flash for a second to make sure to have water in the glas and put back on shelf. Much easier than with lanterns ;)

The ultimate power combo I found for engines is 2 DE6s with the slug in the middle. To save ever having to turntable anything I have the cabs of the DE6s facing opposite directions. I've earned myself my first million in a few hours with this engine setup. Love the game, it's a challenging train sim that really punishes you for dropping the ball on attention.

    1. You can put the flashlight inside the cab, for example, on the shelf near the speedometer. It will charge as long as it is "daytime".
    2. You can buy multiple flashlights.
    3. When the sun is near the horizon, lighting depends on where you loot. Apparently when you look away from the mountains, they are no longer rendered or processed, so they no longer obstruct sunlight. Yes, it's a bug, hopefully they'll fix it eventually.
Does reducing cutoff (but keeping the regulator at the same position) fix wheelslip in real life? In the game it does, but I have always thought that high steam chest pressure would cause the wheels to slip at any cutoff for some reason.

One last thing. I would honestly LOVE a modded playthrough, although perhaps not too modded? My suggestions would be Zeibach's Couplers(for AARs, of course!) and Expanded Station Range(so you can go from the Steel Mill to the Farm or vice versa without losing a job you wanted at either, ONLY IF YOU HAVE THE RAM). Ones that are nice to have all the time, and that you can add into your current save is Discreet Info Plate(very nice for liveries), Easy Tex(to fix the backward sides on cars and cabooses, meaning no backwards Explody Bois and ES&D Caboose!) and Number Manager(custom livery number boi, but only for skins that support it. There's an Erie, US Army, UP, and Pennsy S282 that support it. Sadly nothing for the ES&D Mega Pack yet), which will help make a fun experience!

It's actually pretty impressive just how far the 282 can go with no fire and no water. I had an....... incident recently, whereby I ran her out of water, and dumped the fire, much as you did, and ran on the residual steam in the boiler. I came out of the harbor initially, was running a heavy train, and had done a bunch of shunting at the harbor before taking off over the road. I was heading for City South West, but ran out of water (In both the tender and the glass.... it's always a panic when you see no water in the glass, grab the injector in a blind panic and realize it's already fully open and not putting any water in) and dumped the fire a few switches back from that last one before the steel mill. I figured I'd cut the train off before that last switch, quickly detour the locomotive into the steel mill to take on water, back out, hook up, set the switch off towards CSW and be on my way. Unfortunately, when I jumped out to cut the consist off.... well... I thought I shut the regulator fully, after the fact I discovered what I actually did was open it all the way.... luckily the cut off was only a little forward of center, but, combined with the confusion and lack of realization that the loco was under power, it was enough to let the loco get away from me far enough, and build up enough speed that I couldn't catch it. I chased her all the way to the switch for the goods factory, where thankfully she was still on the rails and had slowed enough for me to catch up and get aboard. I got her stopped, and still had enough steam to make it most of the way back to the steel mill. I got to just about the start of that really short climb after the last bridge, and she just didn't have the pressure left to get up the hill. I think had it been flat she'd've made it to the water tower just.
Anyways, I grabbed a DE2 to drag her the rest of the way...... and just as I was coupling up, I learnt a valuable lesson about airbrakes. The fact that they do, in fact, bleed down over time. Which is precisely what happened to the air brakes on my consist I'd left on the hill before the switch off up to CSW.... so I turned round to hop in the DE2 cab just about in time to have a glazed look of confusion at seeing a cut of cars heading towards me like a cruise missile....
Yeah, that was a fun day, I think I probably lost my railroading license.... but.... I don't know, maybe they'll believe me when I say it was all night shift.

      @IceBear702 9 месяцев назад +1

Similar thing happened to me only backwards. Went up a hill to grab a DE2 after I lost water in the 060 not far out. Came back down to find that the whole train started slipping down the hill about a mile out, probably going 30+. So I’m full speed in the DE2 trying to catch up and lose sight for a while. Me being the brilliant engineer I am, stops paying attention. The cars and 060 had stopped at the bottom and here I come barreling down at Mach Jesus. The rest I’ll leave up to your imagination.

Ah, indeed! And "D" = diesel for the first letter (compared to "S" on the steam engines), and "E" = electric, "M" = mechanical, and "H" = hydraulic for the second letter.

I ran two steel rail jobs from steel mill to the harbor with a single 060. did make the hill so added another 060 i found at the farm at the back to push up that hill. Well silly me didnt throw the right switch so i took the LONG way to the harbor thats 40 the whole way and ran both engines out of water. chuffing into the harbor with like 4 bar each 😂still managed to drop both cuts in 2 separate yards with each engine taking half the train and made it back to the roundhouse to manually add water. That was an experience 😅

Nitrogen is not (very) reactive. Argon, as a noble gas, is inert. They don't burn or explode*. They are an asphyxiation hazard; they are dangerous in large volumes only because they displace breathable oxygen. That's what that symbol on the tank means: the gas isn't poisonous, it just suffocates you if you get caught up in it.

What this game needs is a mod that allows you to multiple-unit the steam locomotive with any of the diesels as long as the steam locomotive is in front, and also a multiplayer mod..

Nearly running out of water? With Hazmat? Wow, that's serious-ly dangerous!
I should probably stop joking about calling this a "serious" playthrough...I restarted the game myself, but I let myself use all the handy HUD tools and views, which you aren't. But then again, you did spontaneously blow up an oil refinery.

Amazing Hyce had what was a rolling bomb and nothing detonated, and you even managed to run out of water and still not blowing to kingdom come. You're either getting better or you're slipping I'm not certain but want I am certain of is next episode something will go boom or in the dirt. It is the order of things for your playthrough and so it shall be.

    Title Smells Like Kenosha!
    0:02 Decisions... XD
0:37 Your PC smells like Kenosha right there, sir!
    0:45 Oh, the HUBERIS!
    1:05 Acktchyually, it's 10. You skipped #3... ^^
    1:11 Right Across The Board!
1:17 To be fair, If You Can See... (Badum Tss!) shunts with just 1 pick up or drop off, they're done fairly quickly. Just don't do the others, especially if it's 3.
1:22 Like that one... that's free cash!
1:24 That's actually a rather nice one as well ^^
5:57 Well, that will age like fine milk! XD
    6:53 lol
    8:02 Innit, broff? XD
9:00 Jumpcut! I preferred the timelapse with untimelapsed audio ^^
9:33 Ultimate Foreshadowing entered the chat.
10:01 Also, you could double-check thrice with the tri-cocks... and it just wouldn't happen as quickly, I presume ^^
10:13 They absolutely did and I wish it was a little less scaled. Should be an option! No need for 100% real scale unless we'd have 100% real scaled maps, but a little less compressed ^^ - felt better in Overhauled with the mod, just sayin' ^^
    10:47 Tha' was Bri'ish!
11:29 LOL! Getting Vietnam Flashbacks of the 4-12-0 that kept grinding down the wheels at the slightest of effort already! XD
13:49 Next to the blower... ^^
15:49 I haven't seen all the 101s yet... but I guess all those things are "well misplaced" there, right?
15:59 Guess anything single digit is fine ^^
    19:36 Morer Gooderer!
20:08 Would have been a fairly decent suicide burn, though ^^
    21:36 If power.notEnough steamEngine.add();
Or at least get the remote and a DH4 somewhere in the consist ^^
    23:16 Such Sadge!
    25:15 Shöve møre!
    29:14 lol
    30:09 RiP iT!
30:13 And thusly the grade beginneth!
31:04 Spark arrestors are overrated. It's fine.
    41:24 Real thing missing? ^^
48:07 "That slosh amount is ridonkulous!" _~Hyce_
48:58 That was perfectly planned and realized **chef's kiss**
    49:46 Wheel shape: D ^^
50:53 LOL! Derail Valley Is A Horror Game!
54:40 We heard it, though! XD
55:05 I'm pretty sure I have done that in Overhauled with Zeibach's Air Brake mod. The independent wasn't self-lapping there (actually, you could decide, there were options for each loco) and you could just set that to release with the automatic still lapping.
55:17 Well, we couldn't but out the engine, but have the tender brake still I guess...
55:37 A wild Vietnam Flashback of the o6o appeared!
55:57 If you just flat spot them enough, they will brake you down anyways XD
    57:59 Dot Jiff!
58:32 Since I've done that already as well, I actually do have a question. After having one so, why does taking out steam (typically by using it with the cylinders...) reduce the water level at the same time? Does taking out steam cool it off, so it shrinks in volume?
59:01 History doesn't repeat itself, but it rhymes!
1:00:46 Hi there ^^ **shakes her fat and fluffy sun butt** XD
    1:03:50 LOL!
    1:05:07 I am!
    1:05:10 Not anymore! There's a blanket! XD
1:05:29 We could pull up a pop filter if we had one... :P
1:05:35 Still not on there, but pretty much every yard has a water tower somewhere.
1:07:24 ThErE iS nO fRiCkEn WaY!
1:08:13 New piece of soundtrack :)
1:09:42 This is also how you can loop more than 800m of train :)
1:10:01 Get all the extra light(er)s...
    1:11:33 The wo'uh!
    1:11:47 Louder!
1:12:46 You also should have gotten the extra flash light... less Horror Game ;)
    1:13:13 lol.
1:13:49 Sounds like you've been playing 7 Days To Die XD
    Debrief: No Kenosha. Next time!

That must have been an extra board night shift. The regular crew would have left the engine on the lead with no fire and out of water.

  • @FrederickG1992

Okay at the end you ran the steamer with no fire. Is it practical too run a steamer with no fire that has pressure?I think not cause your sucking cold air thru the boiler that still hot. Unless it’s necessary. The last scene of sun hitting the 282 reminds me of a photo I have of 3254 doing the 1990 fall run bys at the pre Steamtown NHS with buildings that don’t exist anymore in the background sitting on the hill main

That water usage seems a bit too much... Surely a tender wouldn't drain water that quickly on such a short journey. I know its hard to accurately scale water usage to the map size but it was a really short journey really and the tender was empty?!
