This is actually pretty good. The toner quality for moisture reminds me also to tell people not to use unapproved toner. The mention of dust also reminds me of making sure to empty that waste cartridge.

This is a very good video.. I have a color laser printer that was repeating text every few inches but in a lighter shade, each image faded more than the previous image. I noticed that the image was well fused to the paper, so the issue was not the fuser. I created and printed my own sheet with blocks of each color, K,Y,M,C with each block surrounded by a black border. This was only printed once at the top of the sheet. When printed, ONLY the Black (K) image repeated down the page, including the black outlines of the color blocks. The 3 other colors printed only once and were well fused to the paper. Conclusion: The Black (K) Drum is bad and needs to be replaced.
btw... to make your test sheet in Paint or some other program, you need to convert RGB to CYMK. This conversion is R+G=>Y, R+B=>M, G+B=>C *** Use color values of 255 for each. Size it to fit in Portrait Mode, placed at the top of the page and Print.. this will give you a good indication where the problem is.

@@viandant5 I ended up having to junk the printer and get a new one. It turned out that the circuit board got cracked during our move and even though I repaired some traces and got the printer to print, it seems there's an electrical problem that is not discharging the static from the black drum. So, it's holding onto the toner and gradually reapplying it until it fades out. So, with the fact that toners and drums were getting harder to find and more expensive at that, and that mac drivers were no longer available and it was at least 15 years old (worked great but slowly) I scrapped it. The printer repair shop said that HP printers were the most reliable, easiest to get parts for and easiest to repair. So, I got an HP M182 color laser. It's fast, prints well, takes up to 14" paper and supplies are a lot less expensive, it's wireless AIO. Higher end models have duplex printing, but we don't need that. So, very pleased with it so far.. AND it came with full sized toner cartridges.. Highly recommend if you're looking..

Great job, perhaps the most useful video about printer defects on the internet. Having trouble with my CLP-315 as it's printing ghost images (b&w and color) but the defect disappears over time. Also there is a wide blurry strip (black if printing b&w and yellow/black if printing color) that moves on every page. Next thing I could find is some toner residue on the belt in the form of a wide strip that I suppose can make the wide stripe and I have cleaned it up but the defect still persists. I'm very appreciate for some advice.

Same exact problem here! Same exact model and issue (if viewing the printed paper as portrait, my streaks go horizontally from edge to edge of the paper). My issue started when I replaced the Samsung OEM yellow toner with a 3rd-party yellow toner. I think at first I just had yellow streaks (due to yellow toner cartridge leakage), but now also have the black streak. If I print a blank page, the same streaks also occur.
I have cleaned the drum, belt, transfer roller on the rear cover, replaced the 3rd-party yellow toner with a different brand 3rd-party yellow toner. The black toner is Samsung OEM with ~25% remaining. Any help is well appreciated!

My MFC-9130CW is ghosting on the black toner only. I already changed out the drum, still have the problem. Toner cartridges genuine Brother. The toner stays on page so probably not fuser. Tried several different paper types, same issue. Contacted Brother CS and after responding to request purchase date, serial number and page count they ghosted me. Printing text isn't too bad but bar codes like return labels are unscannable. Blew out machine with compressed air after taking out all components, had problem with false waste toner box full error but that went away.

    I have a LaserJet 2200dn.
I see ghosting of my text as outlined in Step 3 at 1:09 in the video.
My ghosting is exactly 94 mm apart as outlined at 1:20 in the video.
1:20 appears to show a page from the HP LaserJet 220dn manual.
I know the optical drum on my ink cartridge is the problem, not the fuser, becasue the problem is on the page before it reaches the fuser.
The ink is steadfast on the page after printing and cannot be smudged indicating the fuser is doing it's job properly.
The toner cartridge is new and is original HP manufactured.
The optical drum is constantly coated in ink particles, and I don't think it should be.
When I carefully clean the drum, no sooner have it cleaned it than it is covered in ink particles again.
I have run the printer cleaning cycle a few times by pressing and holding the Go button for 15 secs or so, and releasing it.
This has helped a bit, but the ghosting is still there.
    Any ideas?
(I opened up my reserve new original HP cartridge, out of the box, and tried it as well.
It produces lots of smudging, not ghosting, and again the toner is everywhere.)

I replaced all four cartridges recently anyway after they ran out.

because I only use the laser printer for like once every 2 months or so, I guess the damp or air-exposed toner could simply be too damp to work properly sometimes, and what you need to do is print like 10-20 pages to dump the toner as well as clean the drums? LET THE PAPER DO THE JOB, and don't freak out if for some reason you opened up the imaging drum and try to clean it, maybe the towel is a little dirty or you touched a bit with your hand and not realizing it, when you install it its like the whole smear of it just made it worse like it doesn't print anything anymore so you think you fucked up big time(just redo the cleaning it with IPA and let it dry, remaining few dust is ok, but there are still ghosting, thanks to the damp/weathered toner)
this idea kind of works, but I've never seen it, I just applied what I kind of know from using fountain pen and previously refilled inkjet cartridges continuously, but on the partial reverse as the ink is dry powder; You have to use the machine and keep the ink going in order to maintain it.

The only difference I can think between copy-pasted written work and the rest of it is either based on position on the page, or that maybe the typed text is printed in black ink and the rest of the graphics/drawn/copy-pasted stuff is printed as a graphic and using colour inks (combining all colours to get any black/almost-black colours needed there). You could test that idea by telling the printer to print only using black ink and do a black and white version of your printouts, or you can test the position hypothesis by moving things around on the page to switch them around (unless you've already done that accidentally or on purpose and ruled it out). I can't help beyond this, you should probably call a professional - unless anyone else here can help given more info.

Salve.
