This is one of the best tutorials on printer defects in the internet - I am an IT and electronics repair engineer and I have learned a few things from this video - Great stuff.
Thank you very much for this video! I've been an IT professional for more than 10 years, but never held a position that entailed very much printer support. As such, I haven't done more than replacing toner cartridges (and solid ink, and inkjet cartridges). My personal printer at home, an HP LaserJet 4000dn, started acting up and this video helped me to diagnose the reason toner was building up on a thin strip of the drum. I really appreciate that you describe the cause of the malfunction and explain the purpose of the individual parts of the toner cartridge, and not merely state a given part is bad.
Thank you for this video. Apparently my Magenta cartridge had sprinkled the toner all over the place but thankfully not on the actual negative drum or printing drum, or whatever you call it. Cleaning all the cartridges and gears of cartridges with damp paper towel removed all those weird random dots on different papers. This video was helpful. Thank you.
I had the problem with gray pages. I just took the toner cartridge out of the drum assembly (sold as two separate parts) and very carefully blew the toner sitting loose in the drum assembly out (careful not to spit on it or accidentally blow the toner in my face). The prints come out clean again now. I did that outside and over the grass, there was not much toner there to clean out. It made a big difference in print quality. It made it print like it was new again. We had the printer since maybe 2005 or sooner and have only changed the toner twice. The first one was the starter cartridge that usually doesn't come with as much toner as one bought separately. Then the second one changed was another full one. I never needed a new drum yet and never had any issues with the printer other than ONE paper jam. Of course my laser does not print color but I had an inkjet and I hated that thing, inkjets are nothing but trouble.
Thank you. My issue was that the developer roller was COATED in toner. I to clean it and let it dry and i printed a page and found out there was little to any ghosting, after printing a cleaning page and printing more, the ghosting is super faint. this probably means it needs to be cleaned a bit more or replaced. Either way, you have saved me tons, thank you.
Thanks for this very informative video. I now could diagnose the problem, there are horizontal lines of same distance on the paper due to marks on the drum. Even though these marks on the drum are very difficult to see, they cause the toner to sit there and therefore are transferred to the paper. I believe it was caused by the fact that I haven't used the printer for about one year, and the toner left on the drum, from the contact with the wiper blade or de developer roller, affected the surface of the drum.
Good job sir ,,,,,,,,,,,, i unable to find solution for laser printer cartridge on internet, but this video solve my cartridge problem now it's working good , thanks.

I took the toner cartridge drum out of my Brother MFC-8810DW and took it outside and lightly banger the drum on a rag to get the toner ink that accumulated in a pan beneath the or adjacent to the roller out of the cartridge. Then used compressed air to blow out this powered ink until it was gone. Turned the roller by hand and cleaned the roller of toner ink with isopropyl alcohol on a clean cloth several times, till clean Took cotton tip applicators and cleaned any surfaces I could get to on the drum, including inside the slot that the green tab runs on. Now first printed copy no longer gets a 3 inch +vertical black line on the right side of copied paper when printing from the computer, so far anyway. Seems to do the trick. Just clean up the drum. I did not take the drum apart.
I have a problem not exactly the same as shown in the video (12:50). Prints have three white horizontal bandings across the page at the same distance (about 7,5cm). White horizontal strips have about 7 mm height.
viandant5 HP LaserJet 1018. And now I can see there are sometimes 4 white stripes. Depends where on the printout first stripe appears. If at the top of a page than 7,5cm interspace makes it possible to fit four stripes on an A4 sheet.
Krzysiek Krzysiek 75 mm is the drum. the defect is related to the drum. may be a broken gear, a bushing. check if on the drum there is an adhesive sheet, or if it's dirty
I have a colour Ricoh MP C2504, never been serviced. Genuine toner, on the last 1/4 for yellow, last 1/2 for cyan and magenta. I've replaced the toner once. 25000 colour prints in total. All three color drums now have toner stuck to the drum, with light coloured intermittent lines on the page. I've tried cleaning the transfer unit and noticed the auger was a little clogged but not lumpy - didn't work. Would it be the wiper blades on all three drums are all going at the same time. No issue with the black drum or when printing black only.
Hi, Thank you for your video. my brand new canon cartridge 137 black is too light. when printing small size words, it looks too light to read. The colour also seems not to be stable in every spots on the page as the old cartridge. I tried to clean the roller but it was still the same. please help.
Thanks for making this video. my printer is working bad. papers come out of the printer with black strips and stains. paper no longer remains white. i see the toner dirty with black powder. Cleaned it but it doesn't improve. it keeps on coming out. does it mean the toner is bad and should be replaced? or is it something else? Its the original toner and didn't go through half of its lifespan
Probably the problem is the toner cartridge, may be the toner is damp or too old. the wiper blades of this cartridge are made of rubber that become weak after some time
We have a laser printer where a crudely written '!' seems to impress itself as the rollers turn about. I keep thinking someone crudely impressed the '!' into the drum roll or the charge roll. People are too timid to say that it was vandalism, but the '!' looks too articulate to be a random artifact. I have a minor problem, my prints are a bit grayish with minor horizontal fine lines, earlier prints were jet black. I am using hp m126 nw printer with 88a introductory cartridge that has been refilled for first time.
viandant5 bushings of magnetic roller earlier had some kind of lube (silicon lube maybe) but when I refilled some toner got stuck to them, so I cleaned them with a soft cloth, they are now clean but unlubed. Where are contacts of magnetic roller?
magnetic roller bushings must not have lubrification. the contacts of the magnetic roller are on one side of the magnetic roller, those metal flags. may be theu are bent
Thanks for help, everything is okay, I even relubed the bushings, check every thing. The problem is toner, I mixed old toner with new, I guess that is what is causing the problem.
Hey viandant5, Your video is very helpful but after refilling, replacing OPC drum and cleaning the internals of the toner cartridge, I am getting vertical lines on the page at the one end. Also, the paper from the back is also getting dirty. There are no misprints and the OPC drum becomes dirty after printing. I am using Samsung ML2161 printer with MLT101S toner installed.
it's difficult to say without seeing the cartridge. Are you sure of the quality of the toner you used? did you remove the doctor blade? it's easy to damage it. is the wiper blade ok?

Thanks for the video sir. I’m using hp laser jet M577 mfp, I print out today and saw dark spots on my print out sheet, what could be the problem? And also I removed the drum and saw something like dirt on the drum.
a lot of unseen dots or particles will be there, that can be seen when you use a polymaster for offset printing, what would be the solution, i changed both the drum and blade and the toner as well. but the persists, can you help
Hi! Thanks for the video. My xerox 6027 will print perfectly but making copies would result in half the page completely blacked out. Do you have an idea what might be wrong?
Is it really called a doctor blade, or is this a translation mistake? And in the end you mention a lubricated blade, that wasn't introduced in the beginning. This is a very good video from an expert.
Hello, nice video and channel. I have a Vertical white line or lines problem in a Brother MFC-L2710DW but it is not happening all the time. If I print 1 page, 2 o 3, it is ok. But if I print 5 or more pages of a larger document, the page number 5, 6 and then the rest, show a vertical and clearer band or stripe, always in the same side of the impression. I have clear all the printer and the change drum and tonner thanks to all your videos. What could be happening? The printer have only 3 years old. I was thinking of some dirtiness in the laser unit but it is not easy to access to it. Could you give me more ideas please? Thanks for your help.
@@viandant5 It has been already changed for a new one. It is completely covered with toner powder. Drum also changed. I have cleaned it completely. Thanks for your time and help.
@@a4-driver917 It could be the fuser unit. When the fuser is cold the copies are good, but after a few pages the rollers become hot and you have the problem
Hi, great video, i have an issue with my canon 1023, i bought a new toner cartridge cause it gaves me an error of out of toner with my old cartridge, so bought a new and after install it gives me the same error, i've removing the seal correctly, and i can see the magnetic roller full of toner, same as the developing unit, what can it be? Sorry for my english.
May be the toner sensor inside the developer unit, but first of all start cleaning all contacts and inside the printer near the toner cartridge and the developer assembly
First of all many thanks for your very informative videos. I have a couple of new old stock Lexmark Optra and T6xx cartridges with a common problem: All internal components and toner are in top condition. But hardened developer rollers render them unusable. Seems as though developer rollers in 4039, 4049 and T640 are identical. Got any ideas where to get replacement for these? Are there providers in the EU? I really don't want to dispose of my valuable cartridges just because of this common, annoying problem.
I have an OKI c821 laser jet printer, mainly used for printing on T-shirt transfer paper size A3. It has developed a single short horizontal line on the prints. It's always in the same place, possibly blue, bottom right hand side, 8cm long starting from the edge and about 3cm up from the bottom of the page. It does not repeat up the page so I really don't know what it is. If it was the blue drum wouldn't it repeat up the page?
+aharz1 it's difficult to say, probably it's not the drum but it may be related to the drum unit. it may be a bad contact into cyan drum unit, or it can be the drum with a defect and the charge roller discarge though that defect
thank you for your excellent illustration, but I have a different problem and I'm not sure about the reason. the problem is a grey area (about 0.5 cm) is appeared in the upper right side of the paper only when I use duplex. The single side printing is perfect but the problem raised only with duplex. . my printer is Samsung SCX-5635
Hi there, I have a trouble with my printer. I watched your video, but I cannot find my exact problem in it. My printer is a Brother HL-2040 series (laser) printer. When I print the "test print quality" page, the ink on the page is fine, but there is always excess black/gray dots or smudges on the sides of the paper. The dots are packed rather densely, but mainly show up on the right and left sides of the page, especially the left side. I do not think the dots are evenly spaced apart like the two criteria given in your video. They appear somewhat randomly, but are on the left and right margins only. I tried cleaning what I thought was the drum, but there seemed to be a lot of black ink being wiped off, so I didn't want to wipe off all the ink. Unlike your green drum, mine is black. Also, I noticed a bend in the middle of developer roller sealing blade, but I don't see problems with lines, so I do not think that's it. What do you suggest I do?
I think you have to change the toner cartridge, and before reinstalling the new toner cartridge you have to clean the drum surface with a soft cloth. Brother technology put the waste toner inside the toner cartridge through the drum, so if you use a defective toner cartridge the toner on the drum surface may contaminate the new toner cartridge giving background during the print
Thank you for responding! The thing is, I changed the toner cartridge maybe 3 months ago, and the printer is not used often. Also, when I print the test pages, the text on the page is clear and crisp, which does not indicate low toner. The issue is the toner specks/dots on the left and right margins. :( I will try checking the toner again, and will also try cleaning the drum surface some more. When I clean the drum, should I keep wiping it until no black toner comes off? Or is it supposed to have some black toner at all times?
Hmm, I don't think I mean the developer roller. In the Brother HL-2040 laser printer, the drum part is right next to the toner cartridge. When I take the toner out of the printer, it comes attached to the drum unit, and I have to then press a lever so that I can remove the toner cartridge part and actually see the drum.
Toner cartridge and drum cartridge are separate units, obviously they have to stay close each other. you should keep wiping the drum with a soft cloth until no black toner comes off.
This is an excellent video. Can someone please inform me where I could purchase spare laser printer cartridge parts--like the drum, rollers, doctoring blade and gears? Thanks
@viandant5 the right and left ends of my doctor blade is damaged {minor serrations}, hence I get vertical white lines on right and left margins of my print out. I had hardly used that part of the printer since all my printouts were with margins 1.5". Is there any option of getting the part in the market..my printer is Konika minolta pagepro 1500w . Anyway thanks buddy for the video, it helped me diagnosing the problem.

okay, thank you.
I fixed it, I really appreciate, sending love from Ghana, west Africa.@@viandant5
a lot of unseen dots or particles will be there, that can be seen when you use a polymaster for offset printing, what would be the solution, i changed both the drum and blade and the toner as well. but the persists, can you help
thank you very much abaut this
Very nice video sir.....thank u
Hi! Thanks for the video. My xerox 6027 will print perfectly but making copies would result in half the page completely blacked out. Do you have an idea what might be wrong?
I think the scanner under the glass is dirty or defective
Is it really called a doctor blade, or is this a translation mistake?
And in the end you mention a lubricated blade, that wasn't introduced in the beginning.
This is a very good video from an expert.
yes it is called doctor blade
Thanks!!! really helped me.
Are you sure the toner cartridge is ok? Is the toner roller evenly covered with toner?
That roller is a common problem on Lexmark cartridges. Delacamp or Uniener have them, or you could buy an empty cartridge from ebay or something else
@@viandant5 Many thanks for your quick reply. I could not find Uniener though. Do they have a webpage?

@@viandant5 Great! Thank you!
3:42 Lines in the drum surface
Brother mfc l3750 only on the black. What should i do? Thanks a lot
Clean the corona wire of the black drum unit, check the drum if there are lines on the surface
Very nice efert . Thanks
thank you for your excellent illustration, but I have a different problem and I'm not sure about the reason. the problem is a grey area (about 0.5 cm) is appeared in the upper right side of the paper only when I use duplex. The single side printing is perfect but the problem raised only with duplex.
.
my printer is Samsung SCX-5635
+Ramy A Mosa it's difficult to say, probably a damaged or dirty paper feed roller. try cleaning them with alcohol
If this only happens with duplex it suggests something dirty/defective where the paper redirects for duplexing; so one of the duplex rollers maybe?
I will try checking the toner again, and will also try cleaning the drum surface some more. When I clean the drum, should I keep wiping it until no black toner comes off? Or is it supposed to have some black toner at all times?
The drum is not in the toner cartridge. Do you mean the developer roller?
Hmm, I don't think I mean the developer roller. In the Brother HL-2040 laser printer, the drum part is right next to the toner cartridge.
When I take the toner out of the printer, it comes attached to the drum unit, and I have to then press a lever so that I can remove the toner cartridge part and actually see the drum.
Toner cartridge and drum cartridge are separate units, obviously they have to stay close each other. you should keep wiping the drum with a soft cloth until no black toner comes off.
I am getting red line on the right side of paper. How do I clean this? Thanks.
Without knowing which is your printer it's difficult to say. may be the magenta cartridge.
This is an excellent video. Can someone please inform me where I could purchase spare laser printer cartridge parts--like the drum, rollers, doctoring blade and gears? Thanks
In europe you could try Delavamp
super useful! thanks a lot *****
That cartridge it's the same as Brother TN-2010/TN-2220, may be you can find it searching for Brother part
Thank you...
nice video ,thank
hey thanks for this video mate. i have a problem which the paper got a dark print on the side of the paper(very dark) which is like black lines
+Vijay Gowtham which printer?
Have a Samsung M2885FW which prints four equidistant horizontal lines. Cleaned the drum etc but does not help. You have covered vertical lines but not horizontal lines. Any suggestions ?
They are repetitive defects, it depends on the distance of the defects. I have a video about repetitive defects
Does the damaged drum cartridge cause grinding noise ??
Yes there are gears rolleras and other moving parts
