When Cans Collide!
The explicit dynamics method of FEA is ideal for modeling highly nonlinear, large-deformation, and contact-dominated problems such as collisions, multi-body contact, forming, and highly nonlinear material or geometry.
If you make parts or products that are formed or bent as part of the manufacturing process, or unintentionally damaged during some event like a collision, the explicit dynamics method may be used to simulate it for a better understanding of the behavior, and to guide design improvements or protections.
This simulation shows the resulting damage of aluminum cans colliding at high speed while being conveyed.
