Missouri was my first ship in the navy in '91 and '92, I was in deck department. In 2003 the ship moved to Pearl Harbor and I was part of a volunteer crew to help clean up the ship since it was mothballed for so many years. When we got there, the teak wood decks had 3 ft weeds growing out of it, it blew my mind. Then in 2005 I visited the ship as a museum and the boat deck on the starboard side, which was my deck that I cleaned everyday, was open to see inside the berthing area, and the one berthing people could tour happened to by my old berthing where I slept and lived. I was so amazed that my old bunk area was part of the museum tour. I'm proud to have been a part of the Mighty Mo and also the navy fleets I was a part of the years after.
A great video that choked me up a bit. I went aboard the Missouri as a little kid in Bremerton not long before her reactivation. I told my sister that someday I'd be on a ship just like it someday. Fast forward a bit, and I'm in Navy "A" School, receiving my first orders... Which, of course, were to the Missouri!!! My father's first ship was the battleship California, and he was aboard for just a short time before Dec 7th, and I was about to become a second generation BB sailor!! After telling him about my orders, he suggested that I didn't "lose my battleship" like he did !! Sadly, this was just before her Desert Shield deployment, and those orders changed. I'd have been part of the decomm crew in this video. I still think of her as "my ship"...
I was in Long Beach the day she was decommissioned i was there during my 2 week reserve duty on the USS. Walbash. MO. IS NOW ON GUARD DUTY OVER THE ARIZONA AT PEARL HARBOR HAWAII.
And cool fact one the hull of the 6 iowa that was scrapped, was used to repair her sister wisconsin hull's, and that how she earned the nickname wisky.
Agreed. China would be a nightmare because their govt can't even respect the Chinese people let alone anyone else. All the Asian nations are sick of China's bullying and the western nations support them. America is vital. I just pray the Americans keep their freedom in the face of the marxists trying to take over there too.
Although I never served on The Grey Lady and we all knew her by so many other names. Having served on two of her Escort Ships, one during Desert Storm I have all the respect for her and her Crew. Bless THE MIGHTY MO.
Our military leaders and those in congress who approve our defense budget are of the opinion that the Missouri and her sister ships are no more than super expensive launch platforms. But I do believe those ship are a lot more than that and they could serve our country again if modernized and equipped with newer more efficient forms of propulsion and they could do so much more efficiently that a 13 billion dollar aircraft carrier. There aren't many nations in the world capable of sinking those battle wagons, not even those new super modern and ultra quiet Russian attack submarines who demonstrated they could easily sneak up on one of those new carriers and sink them. I am convinced when given the proper weapon systems, electronics and propulsion, the Missouri and her sisters could keep up their outstanding service in defending our nation. The pentagon sent aircraft carriers to the gulf and the Iraqis said: "who? what? oh well...." They sent Storming Norman and his brand new Abrams tanks, the fiercest war machines ever used on a battlefield and the Iraqis went: "Storming who? What tanks?....." But then they sent the Missouri and the Iraqi soldiers ran for their lives knowing the rain of fire that was about to hit them. That right there shows just how effective those ships can be and the torpedoes capable of penetrating their belt armor hasn't been invented yet. So my suggestion is, bring them back and let them carry our flag again
I appreciate your enthusiasm, but the fact is these ships are almost 80 years old. No, stop and think about how LONG 80 years really is. They could not handle the requirements of 24 hour service day in and out. THE WEAR AND TEAR OF HUNDREDS OF MEN LIVING ON IT DAILY.. The ships were constructed in the technology of that time period. Trying to bring them into the 21st century really would be impossible. And these ships are historic, and irreplaceable. How terrible would it be to see them destroyed and sunk. No, they definitely deserve to be maintained and admired for their service as museum ships, and be admired by the public who come to be on a piece of history.
I served on the Big J BB 62 and the Mighty Moe BB 63. Rock solid ship's I guess they were to expensive to maintain. The US Navy now builds state of the art destroyer's that keep hitting other ships... just saying. NAVY you have nothing to lose by bringing a Battleship battlegroup back.
It has been said that the aircraft Carrier made the battleship obsolete I don’t believe it. I love the carriers but the battleships should still have a role in our navy.
@Mike Hunt the only thing i can think of is to keep them battle ready and use them as a mobile shore battery for a last ditch effort of protection, should some country get brave enough to invade.
The sinking of battleship Yamato, the largest and most powerful battleship ever made to 386 aircraft, 7 bombs and 13 torpedoes was the final nail in the coffin that battleships were far inferior when compared to the carrier.
Since recently our larger ships have been rammed by Chinese and North korean tankers and large vessels. Unfortunately we lost good American personnel. Also there has aris difficultly with access denial weapons or missiles. We need to recreate a new class of battle ship. One that can survive torpedo, missile, and Naval gun fire. A hull that can take it on the chin, nards, and guts. A punch out enemy boat like no other. We want a 200 plus nave. We will need 300 plus ships to stamp out the Chinese, Russian, North Koreans, and Iranians. At least two of these ships add to the 12 carrier ships.
I really need to get out to Pearl Harbor sometime to see the Arizona and Missouri. When they took the Missouri to Pearl, did it travel there under it's own power or was it towed?
