    The Beach Boys comment was actually pretty spot on. Most Misfits songs actually sound a lot like sped up 50's songs with horror themed lyrics.

      @RubyRedStone If people want to compare a punk band to the Beach Boys, Ramones seem more apt considering the amount of surf inspired punk they did. Just look at Sheena's A Punk Rocker and tell me it's not surf, or at least more so than Misfits.

    The whole idea behind the misfits is that's it's a lot of irony. Lyrically its blood, gore, and scifi. But sonically its upbeat and happy.

    Have a great misfits story. Saw them when they first toured with Michael graves . Went to club babyhead in providence ri. The show was delayed due to a pipe burst over the stage and we stood outside for 2 hours waiting to get in ,in the winter . When the misfits came on they played for 3 1/2 hours because of what happened and at the end they ran out of songs and they started asking the crowd for songs and started replaying songs . Was a great night ...

Also Ive always considered them a mix of hardcore and like 50s be bop/pop music lol so I dont think Sori's Beach Boys reference is that off actually-alot of their songs(not all but alot) have this sound

  • @Argarna
    @Argarna 6 лет назад +12

    My interpretation(s) of the song is that it’s someone’s longing to have a relationship, whether that’s a past romance or someone in the future. Also being so insistent for it that you end up trying to bring a woman back to life or cratering a woman from various remains (Bride of Frankenstein style)
    The line about “the rose that was burned by her sun” to me represented a past love that has ended, since roses have always been a sign of romance and when something has “gone up in flames” it means everything has gone wrong.
    Side note:
    I mainly read it that way because I was going through a breakup at the time I first heard it, earlier this year I met Michale Graves and told him what this song meant to me and he said that “I’m glad that it connected with you, because I wrote that song from my own young mans broken heart”.
    Just thought I’d share my insights on this song, I liked hearing your thoughts too, this song (band and Horrorpunk in general) has meant a lot to me for the last 9 years.
    If you liked this I would suggest the Graves era Misfits albums (American Psycho and Famous Monsters) the bassist and guitarist also had a side project between Misfits eras that you might enjoy called Kryst The Conqueror due to Jerry Only becoming a born again Christian.
    Always enjoy hearing your perspective on songs, keep up the good work :)
    P.S. not offended in the slightest comparing Misfits to The Beach Boys, if you look at how much TBB put into their music and we’re such perfectionists about it, it’s actually quite a high compliment

  • @pietrayday9915
    @pietrayday9915 6 лет назад +4

    5:08 - you're actually right on target: There'd be no Misfits as we know them without the Ramones basically inventing modern punk rock, and the Ramones were quite consciously and deliberately channeling the Beach Boys as one of their influences. Good ear, and good catch - not everyone will notice or point the similarity out, but it's not your imagination!

    this is more a modern sounding punk rock era of misfits. original misfits with glenn danzig on vocals were what these guys are known for. they influenced early usa metal bands a lot, bands like metallica and megadeth. metallica did cover of their 3 songs, die die my darling, last caress, and green hell. but i love all eras of this band. besides horror vibes, they use a lot of rockabilly stuff, musically, visually and lyrically. they even did an album of covers of the hits from the 50s. but sori is not that far off with beach boy reference :D honestly, i think punk stole a lot of that catchyness from the surf rock :D

Hardcore is basically more aggressive, abrasive and heavily distorted in comparison to standard punk and lyrically because of their horror themes and stage presence they are considered horror punk. What you reviewed was the second incarnation of The Misfits featuring Michael Graves on the vocals and musically the band was geared towards a more metal oriented sound in comparison to their earlier stuff with Danzig. Both the eras rocked so I suggest you react to some of Danzig's stuff, "Die Die Die My Darling" is a good song to start with

    Yeah like 5 million other people are saying, the only really worthwhile Misfits stuff is the Danzig era. But I wonder if that era of punk/hardcore will just sound feeble, simplistic and underproduced to newcomers. I don't think I've seen any reaction channels do old school punk to any degree really. I mean to me, the best stuff by Minor Threat, Black Flag, Bad Brains and so on are hundreds of times more intense, powerful (and enjoyable) than a lot of metal, but I can completely understand how someone used to huge productions would just find it dinky and 'homemade'. I guess Venom and Mayhem aren't a million miles away budget-wise but they still are recognisably METAL.
    As for The Beach Boys, they were one of the biggest influences on the Ramones, and the Ramones were a direct predecessor to the Misfits. A fair bit of early punk rock is very 'tuneful'.
    Anyway..
    Black Flag - Rise Above
    Minor Threat - Filler
    Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia
    Avengers - We Are The One
    Bad Religion - Fuck Armageddon...This is Hell
    MDC - John Wayne Was a Nazi
    Discharge - Protest and Survive
    Fugazi - Suggestion
    Fear - Let's Start a War
    Misfits - Last Caress, Bullet, Where Eagles Dare etc etc

    To all those people who think the Graves era is better then the Danzig era. It's real simple. Glenn wrote all of the songs in his era. Jerry pretty much just uses Glenn's method of writing songs for this album and anything else that the Misfits did after that. Don't get me wrong, as a person I'm more in tune with Jerry, and he was into a lot of the same stuff that influenced Glenn musically and Visually, so I don't mind him going on with the band without Glenn. And he truly loves the fans which I completely respect. At a concert in 97 he spoke with me for at least 10 minutes after a show when I know he was exhausted. A Class Act.
    Graves on the other hand was just an excellent fill in 4 a couple of albums because he was a good singer. If you asked him he would say that himself. Watch some of his interviews. There is no doubt that Graves is a better live singer, but Glenn's studio vocals pre Earth AD are tremendous and he didn't have half the production value that Graves was afforded. The first two Danzig albums show what a great singer Glenn was in the studio when he was young and had somebody helping direct him.
    Graves is doing is his best Glenn impression mixed in with his personality and I like a few of the songs off this album very much, including this one, but the Walk Among Us album and the songs from Static Age are masterpieces. And earth ad was very influential, which is the reason why the band exist today.
    And as far as influence. Glenn Danzig was the reason why Metallica loved that band. They used to wear Samhain shirts as well, and if you notice on the garage days EP, Kirk is wearing a Danzig skull shirt.

      I grew up on the Danzig era stuff - my brother was a fan of Danzig, and stopped listening to the Misfits when Danzig left, and followed Samhain and Danzig's solo and side-projects. This is my first time hearing the Graves-era Misfits, and to me this stuff isn't half bad at all. If all the Grave-era Misfits songs are more or less this good, then I could enjoy both - I think this stands up well to anything from the Danzig era, even though the Danzig era is the Misfits I know and think of first.

      Dig up her bones, Descending angel and many of the other "new" misfits songs are Graves old songs (Graveses? not my first language.) Totally different than the old Danzig era Misfits. But its not Jerry. Those song are just Gravesinian (the man wrote them, listen to the acoustic versions)

    One thing that you two should also know, Jerry Only, who writes most of the lyrics for 1990s to present Misfits, is devoutly Catholic and the first two albums released in the 90s (American Psycho and Famous Monsters) have quite a few Christian songs on them.

    Actually, you’re spot on with The Beach Boys comment. Most real punk is derived from 1950s surf rock and doo wop. Punk just took that and gave it a lot more energy in a simplified form. The Misfits are my favorite punk band. They’re just a really fun band. Thank you for this video!

    Misfits was/is horror punk, but the Graves-era touched upon some metal-themes. Guitarist Doyle and Jerry actually played in a christian metal band called Kryst The Conquoror or something in the late 80s/early 90s, before reforming Misfits w/o Glenn Danzig.

    Misfits is a horror punk band. Basically a music version of B movies. Zombies, aliens, maniacs, ketchup blood, etc. However this song was written by their second vocalist long before he joined the band. I think I've seen a video of him telling he was about 15 whem he wrote it on his acoustic guitar.

    What's your problem with the Beach Boys? They've been an awesome band! Surfing USA was the first album I ever bought for myself, so that's gotta tell you something. In general, american is quite different to english punk, although there's been cross influences. You definitely had the bubblegum influence in the Ramones ("Sheena is a Punkrocker") and the Misfits ("Last Caress") and then obviously Bad Religion ("I want to conquer the world") and Social Distortion ("Don't take me for granted") had their melodic versions and the in the 90s Green Day ("American Idiot") and Offspring ("Why don't you get a Job") and all those guys were pulling that into the pop charts. But now you're into the Horror Punk, another connection is open, that's Psychobilly. Try Demented are Go with "Pervy in the Park". :D
    Other american punk classics would include Dead Kennedys "Too Drunk to Fuck", Black Flag "Rise Above", Capitol Punishment "Jody is my bloody love", Circle Jerks "Wild in the Streets" and of course very early influences on The Stooges "I wanna be your dog" and MC5 "Kick out the jams".

      As an extension to that, I was getting weird looks for saying back in the 1990s, long before surf covers of black metal songs became an internet meme, that Norwegian black metal sounded suspiciously like the Beach Boys at times, and that the influence of the Beach Boys thus even extends to extreme metal. (And why not? They wrote and played some excellent rock music!)
      Some of those surf-metal memes:
      ruclips.net/video/4VlPDx_zDts/видео.html
      ruclips.net/video/2T9OPdcN5Ss/видео.html

    • @IntergalacticApeMan
      @IntergalacticApeMan 6 лет назад

      I think the more obvious connection is, the tremolo picking and stuff that transitioned through the wave and gothic scene into black metal, but yeah, sure. I didn't even know there were any memes. I just had surf rock in my playlists anyway, just next to thrash or black metal. One anecdote though: Do you remember back in the day, when there were double tape decks with high speed dubbing that you could playback at double the speed? Well, must habe been 90/91, when I was running the Beach Boys on that set up when I played chess with a buddy. So combined with your theory, I basically invented the second wave of black metal. xD

    Yeah, I think you're actually right Sori, I've thought a lot of times while hearing Ramones, Clash and Misfits that they sound very 50s. In the Danzig era they were *extremely* 50s at times. BTW everyone recommending Danzig era songs, well, that is the best stuff, I agree, but they really need to be letting you know most songs back then were like one or two minutes. I mean, hell , a complete Danzig era album was usually like a half hour. A lot of punk's like that honestly.

    Their discography tends to average out at about 2 minutes, and the songs are generally rather on-the-nose about horror movies and themes such as that. Not very long, not all that deep (about 6 feet under), but a horrifically good time to be had.

    Like some people have already mentioned Misfits are horror punk band and even have some heavy metal influences and that's probably why they have actually pretty melodic singing. Many punk bands today (many of them are called post punk) have this kind of melodic singing were the singer(s) is/are trying to hit all the notes. I'm not sure what you guys were thinking when you thought how the genre "punk" sounds but it could be punk bands that are along the lines of Sex Pistols or The Clash maybe? (Even though Sex Pistols often argued that The Clash weren't punk because they were to good on their instruments) Maybe you should listen to songs like 'anarchy in the uk' by Sex Pistols or 'London's burning' by The Clash and see if that is closer to the sound that you were thinking of when you thought punk. 😊
