Lyrics:
I once held her
In my arms
She said she would
Always stay
But I was cruel
I treated her like a fool
I threw it all away
Once I had mountains
In the palm of my hand
And rivers that ran through
Every day
But I must have been mad
I never knew what I had
Until I threw it all away
Love is all there is
It makes the world go ’round
Love and only love
It can’t be denied
No matter what you think about it
You just won’t be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who’s tried
So if you find someone
Who gives you all of her love
Take it to your heart, don’t let it stray
For one thing for certain
You will surely be a-hurtin'
If you throw it all away
If you throw it all away

Johnny Cash introducing Bob Dylan: possibly the coolest moment in television history.
Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash were busom buddies. I had a cigarette, then coffee with Johnny Cash at the concession in the Hollywood bowl October 1966 during Bobs concert. He was a flirt, between marriages at age 39. I was married, 17 with a five month old baby at her first concert. She grew up on Bob Dylan‘s music in our home. We are all like Rolling Stones!
I never knew Cash had a show....... and I'm 38!
I better get my 💩 in line.
Sure was
X Mo that was probably when you were young and not paying much attention to television. I remember it but it was quite awhile ago
@@darlene4612
You're probably right. Isn't it past your bed time young lady?
to look at mid 60's Dylan late 60's Dylan and 70's Dylan, it's like three different people the breadth of his genius is unbelievable
Look at him he's the coolest mofo ever.
@@davidlauritzen4420
He kinda looks like Paul Newman here.
@@nelsonx5326 lol I don't see it

Country Dylan is a very underrated little period. His voice was really really something special during this era. John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait and New Morning are all very cozy, very welcoming records
absolutely agree, Just as great the 65/66 period had been it was also manic, and thankfully he survived that insane time, it was inevitable he would become recluse after that but like you said that period has so many gems, New Morning is one of my favourite albums of all time.
.. and this is when i quit B. D.
Bob quit smoking for a month before appearing on Johnny Cash’s show. He wanted his voice to be his best
@@lawrencemay8671 ... lol .... are you kidding ? He didn't have any voice. However, this is what made it successful.
@@catholiccowboy8545 AS THE SONG SAID “A VOICE THAT CAME FROM YOU AND ME”.
Summer of '69 and everyone is in full blown hippie mode. Dylan "no thanks" and makes a country album.
Actually by '69 country rock was a big movement. The Byrds and The Band (and Dylan) were at the forefront. But you also had the Flying Burrito Brothers and other smaller acts.
He’s always been his own person for Sure. That’s Rare in this world.✌️
Why we love Dylan, always marching to the beat of his own drum.
I don’t want to live in a world without Bob Dylan
I have a feeling that he has seen all that he needs to see. As another old man, living with regrets, when the time comes, it won't be so bad,
The world will never be without Bob. You won't have a choice.
Bob Dylan is crap.
get ready, then
Don’t worry, you won’t
He looks gorgeous here
Absolutely, drop dead gorgeous! 😎
1969...three years dried out....intense drug use replaced by family, the Torah; the Bible, the wife and the brood.....a satisfied mind. Yet this phase to is just that; another phase. He would eventually return to imbibing. It's his life. Artists of his caliber tend to sacrifice in ways that they believe intensifies or gives new perspective to what they do. It's DAMNED HARD TO WRITE A SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!~E
He used to be very beautiful indeed
Serious levels of handsomeness.
@@EricScottBloom people hated dylan because he had that Jewish look a fact.
It was extremely rare to see Dylan on tv in those early days.
Of course, Johnny Cash (a true man of the people) recognized and respected his brilliance.
Interesting crossing of cultural wires here, as Dylan appeared on the Johnny Cash show multiple times in the 1969-73 period. Country music (which Dylan has worked in on and off) and counterculture. Very different audiences. Dylan and Cash bridged them. I'm sure Cash surprised some of his fans with this, as Dylan surprised his fans with Nashville Skyline. According to my dad, who worked in country and knew Cash professionally, Cash's only requirement was apparently that Dylan get a shave and a haircut :)
@@bostonseeker
Bostonseeker,
Excellent background story...
If I remember correctly, clean clothes, a haircut, and a shave were huge sacrifices to make in those days. 😁
Cash and Dylan indeed, at first glance, seem to be culturally incompatible, but I suspect they were kindred spirits.
Whatever.... they were great artists who had a profound affect on music and the culture. More than most.
Exactly. People listened to Johnny. Glad for our sakes they did.
TV was way way more hip back in the day
@@paulgentile1024 Amen What happened to this world Its insane now. Is this what our fathers fought and died for? They would be sick seeing what we became
I love his voice during this period. Well I love all his voices because they’re distinct and soulful but I esp love this one. Here’s to a Long & healthy life Bob.

Live long and prosper
But this also mean that a little of singing is acting that explains just how well an actor his good buddy Levon Helm was.
One of Dylan's greatest songs. You don't have to be obscure to be profound.
What an exellent determination
I think you meant to say, "You don't have to be well-known to be profound."
I think the OP might have been referring to the more direct lyrics used on Nashville Skyline than Dylan was previously known for using? Great clip!
Nashville Skyline, such a magnificent album.
Yes
It's like Springsteen's Nebraska, people don't talk about it too often, but if you get into it, it becomes your favorite one.
That, and Self Portrait are my 2 favorite Dylan albums...
John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyville and New Morning are a great thematic trilogy for Dylan. Totally underrated in his discography.
@@kenvarnold3659 YES!!!!!
Bob has written some of the greatest love songs ever; this is one of them.
And don't forget Positively 4th Street 😉
I think a lot of people miss out on the religious & spiritual dimensions of these songs when they interpret them at face value as only being about personal love. To me, this song is about the postmodern crisis of faith, and how people turn their backs on the church and the Holy Mother, without knowing what they had.
kimosabbe50 that’s more like a fuck you song
Yeah, no one touches teh soul quite like Bob Dylan. Some of his songs somehow manage to home in on the most sensitive heart strings.
Love minus zero and she belongs to me are good ones swell
Aw Johnny clearly loved and respected this beautiful young man.
Dylan's voice at its clearest
There is nothing Cloudy about Bobs singing in Blood on the Tracks or countless others for that matter , in fact this
live performance was a bit sketchy compared to the studio version !
I agree, however I prefer 60s & 70s Dylan when it comes to vocals - and his music in general. Though his voice nowadays is better than it was in the 80s and 90s. Especially on Rough & Rowdy

Definitely his best imo.
Dylan is a folk singer. The line between the two genres is thin to begin with.
Thank you for naming the album. I've been a casual Dylan fan for a while, but always thought "Lay Lady Lay" had a particularly appealing sound. Now I think I know where that came from. 👍
@@brushstroke3733 yes I had only known the old folk songs so I put in Nashville skyline and didn’t know the first song was a duet with cash himself and I was floored. Cash and Bob’s duet was like discovering gold for me
Every phase of Dylans career is prolific. I remember it all like it was yesterday. His impact to music and society is immeasurable.
One of my favorite Dylan songs along with a hundred others. Simply amazing

Silly to say he can't sing; most distinctive voice in music.
He can sing.
@@JohnDavis-im1oy he does both, as evidenced by this very video.
It's not silly, he is not a 'singer', nor a guitarist, he would likely not be famous if he wasn't such a damn fine writer... I'm pretty sure I heard him 'use' a different voice on a song once and it was actually quite good, it just that he chooses to use that nasal drawl to make him 'distinctive'..

That stripped down back to basics thing he did with Skyline and JWH will always be my favorite iteration of Dylan’s career. This song is such an underrated gem.
Johnny Cash had real guts
Despite all the country singers who opposed protesters, he brings on Bob Dylan without apology. You are missed John

I love you Bob Dylan and I thank you for your music and paintings and gifts for this generation, I love you, Beth 💗
Me too, I threw it all a way, I feel better now.
This is a compact Country masterpiece, it says everything that needs to be said in a couple of minutes, with a superb unseen backing band in the background and some impeccable understated organ fills quietly sliding in towards the end to add even more depth and texture. Like it or hate it, Dylan has one of the most distinctive and expressive voices in music, and he is not overpowered even singing with Cash or the equally great Willie Nelson. Like them he respects the words of a lyric, their meaning, whether his own or someone else's, his phrasing and delivery are unique and his influence as a singer is hugely underrated. For example, I'm as great an admirer of Tom Petty as you will find and Petty's singing owes a huge amount to Dylan, which in no way diminishes Petty’s own brilliance.
the song is one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. it doesn't have the recognition it deserves

First time seeing Bob sing in his country voice for the Nashville Skyline album. While his singing is obviously affected, some of the songs are great on that record, especially the one he sings here. Lay Lady Lay was the hit..
This is actually closer to his real voice I would suspect. Everyone in Minnesota talked about how he went out to Colorado and came back with the "Bob Dylan" voice. This voice is probably Robert Zimmerman's voice.
