Can you imagine music of this quality on network television today? Neither can I... Two of the greatest folk/country singers of all time singing an epic duet!
Joni's voice is a flowering vine growing around rusty bobbed wire, sunlight through honey, a delicate child lost in the big city...Just the best sweetest female singer to ever walk the earth...
johnny cash had great presence in his voice and appearance, a bit like john wayne...joni was the coolest girl in the world., as well as having a beautiful voice....add in a great bob dylan song and the result is marvellous.
What can be said about theses two incredible singers The Icon Johnny Cash his deep rich voice brings any song too life it's like you feel where he's talking about and then you put Joni Mitchell with him and this sweet beautiful woman with a voice that is so soft and delicate but delivers so much. Pure gold they really should have done an album together.
Joni and Johnny are unreal I thought I already heard the best of Johnny, but after seeing this, I can now say with confidence I have heard his best performance. ❤️
Joni is 72 years old, of humble beginnings and like many if us, had challenges in her life. I spent many evenings with Joni and listen to her music often. Let's choose to remember all she has given us ... I know I do! I'm blessed to have shared and been even a little part of her life! God bless Joni, is my sentiment.

@@davisworth5114 Really? I never knew about her having polio. I am old enough to have seen a few polio victims as a child, yet today, this stupid growing antivax generation movement believes vaccines are harmful. Maybe if them or their kids all got polio and measles/mumps they would clue in.
I just saw this unbelievably beautiful and haunting rendition of this Dylan classic on "The Johnny Cash Show" And had to come here to comment. Johnny Cash is my favorite artist of all-time...and he is perfectly matched here with Miss Mitchell. What a beautiful arrangement....as well..just incredible!!!!
Wow, so cool to see my divine Joni again in this video. Johnny is great, but Joni is just out there on her own, so beautiful, so sublime, feminine, and powerful.
This was a very special period of time, and I was fortunate to have lived through it. Johnny was not self absorbed, he was very appreciative of other artists and types of music, and Joni, she is so cool!
How cool is this way back when. And his dark tones, then she jumps in with her high notes. Magic, just magic. Jonny knew who were important in this age of change. Love iy
i always liked johnny cash's rendition of this song with bob dylan, but joni mitchell takes off where june carter leaves off and leaves bob lookin' for a jet plane! this is a most amazing duet, like the story of the beauty and the beast, it reaches the heart
You can clearly see how much she respected him at 2:10... She just knows that she was there with one of the greatest musicians of all time.. incredible!
Yo nado - Yer probably right, she knew that, thought that, etc. Of course, that's what she is, too. I'm finding myself even more moved by her songs, especially her singing and lyrics, now than I was back in the 70s. For me, she's the supreme female musician of all time.
nadominhoca it's funny that you said that because Joni Mitchell is superior to him in pretty much every category singing songwriting musicianship artistry just everything she's a complete an utter genius but she's been relegated to lesser than cause she's a woman.
They are my favourite male and female artists of that era. But she was 24ish and he was 45ish so he was much more established. Its natural that she would have respect for him because he was a legend by then. She is fabulous, but her best was yet to come. I think, all told, Joni was the more revolutionary and skilled and the better songwriter, but Johnny had such wonderful visceral emotion. They are both outstanding in their own ways and I couldn't choose between them.
Anthony Jackson Joni is absolutely an amazing artist. Stop with the sex battle.. “oh she didn’t get all the recognition because she is a woman”... Jesus!!! Can’t you people stop with that?!! Johnny Cash was a legend. Joni was a legend to be! Both are/were amazing!! Johnny was extremely charismatic! Joni was technical and extremely talented! Can’t we just focus on that?!?
um, well considering that he had his own show, and is one of the most well known and recognized country music personalities in the world, I'd say someone knew him when he was alive. What's really impressive is how he reestablished his spot before he passed. He was an amazing personality.
No one that didn't see the Johnny Cash Show doesn't know how influential he was. He was a country super-star who gave entre to his fans to new musicians like Joni and James Taylor who made their first national appearances on his show. This guy was a true stud. Oh, yeah he also gave Dylan his first electric guitar (a Fender Strat) that drove the acoustic folkies nuts and created folk rock.
Wow. I had no idea that Joni sang with Johnny on his TV specials. Its a shock really. And here is Joni and Johnny singing Bobby. And it's Bobby's song about Joan Baez. This is amazing.
gave me goosebumps and electric energy charges. Two true and deep originals. Much as you have to give Johnny credit, you have to give the network credit too. Pity they have lowered the bar so far these days. Thabks to whoever signed of on Johnny's show back then. It left is this great footage.
I think this was Joni at her greatest, about 1971 when she made Blue, her best album. She gives me goose bumps, the versatility of her voice, the emotion she puts into it.
even though I am a Johnny Cash fan (who isn't) I can't help but noticing he usually doesn't have a mic... Very powerful voice! (a little sarcasm doesn't hurt)
If you get the Best Of The Johnny Cash Show CD it has a longer version of this particular duet on it. The song was shortened for television broadcast which is really too bad because it is such a beautiful performance.
@@patriciajohnson3017 wrong....Johnny Cash is one of only a handful of artists in the past century-plus to attain almost mythological status.... Joni Mitchell is a great songwriter. But she is not is Cash's category... But,in any case, they are both legends.
one of the best 2 minutes 14 seconds in world history
For sure!
Just splendid!
Certainly noteworthy ☝️😊
10 years later and I can tell you that, this is still the case!
You’re gonna say the same thing on your wedding night
Can you imagine music of this quality on network television today? Neither can I... Two of the greatest folk/country singers of all time singing an epic duet!
This is a true masterpiece. Albeit not one of the most popular songs that Johnny performed, it's my all time favourite. And Joni is astonishing. Wow
And best of all, Bob Dylan does not sing on this version.
@@whitepanties2751
That was irresistible, huh?
Johnny and Bob did a great job on Johnny cash show. This was probably after the bob- Johnny performance.
Joni Mitchell was simply from another world, Johnny was caught in ring of fire-- they do this with tenderness and vulnerability

Beautiful, nothing else needs to be said about either of them. They live their lives as they will, we live ours the same. No blame, no shame -
Oh, my God! Two minutes and fourteen seconds of heaven. Thank you for posting this marvelous duet.
I love Joni's modulations; what a great voice, and Johnny, of course.
Joni and Johnny are unreal

The combination of Joni's sweet soprano voice and Johnny's raspy voice is really special
Two voices coming together to create perfection, wonderfully beautiful.
Great people make great music, and great TV too…Rest in Peace Johnny Cash, you were my first hero.

I don't think I've ever heard a better rendition of this song....Thanks for the post.
