You can remove the radiator without removing the fan clutch. Just unbolt the shroud and push it back and slide the radiator upwards
Absolutely
Yup
Yea I just did mine
I was wondering about that, thanks for the tip.
So it can be replaced without the removing the fan
I used your video as a step by step to get me through the radiator change. Thank you so much for the professional help.
A Million Thanks !.... I swapped out my failing '97 radiator today...I did use a commenters suggestion of not removing the fan when removing the radiator, but found it was a pain to re-install the shroud with the fan there,so I went ahead and took off the fan to re-fit the shroud...Fan came off easily with a Ford fan clutch wrench kit ($20 online)...Yeah,it took me several hours and a few"mis-steps" along the way,but your instructions saved me at least $300 just in labor alone (My mechanic now charges $140/hr.)
98 here! No need to do that much tear... The Haynes Rep Manual calls to remove the fan and shroud, but there is not need for that, you have room for taking the radiator out and putting the new one in. Just push the shroud back after removing the two screws that hold it in place and lift from bottom tabs. What I needed to remove was the de degas bottle, since you need room for removing the bottom rad. hose and trans. cooling line; although you might be able to get them from underneath, if you don't mind getting some coolant on you! Hope this makes it easier! The hardest part? Pulling the bottom hose out! You need to use one flat scrw dvr and some other wider leverage from the edge of the hose, and go from one side to the other prying it straight out. After half way out and only after, then you might be able to pull it out by hand!
Thank you for the feedback! +Fishing Rod
Hey thank for the details am parked outside autozone watching this vid thinking should i rent the the fan wrench . this is the comment i was looking for will try it with out removing the fan !!!!
These videos are so professional and clearly made. You have saved me hundreds of dollars! Cheers!

I replaced mine today. I used a large pair of channel locks instead of the special fan pulley tool. I also had a different fan assembly which required lifting it out with the shroud.
Absolutely love the fact that this video is in real world view. Little struggles with wrenches etc. made it worth watching every second. Busted knuckles really do happen more often than most think. Straight forward video very well done. Thank you for your time and help
+John Hagler Thanks for the feedback!
Excellent video..I am finishing a 1999 Expedition. Your camera work was excellent and describing how many millimeter wrenches were used. Your videos help a lot of people.

+Will Zavala Thanks for the feedback!
Once again great video. Thank you. This is my next project.
Does the radiator come with o rings installed for the transmission lines?
Can I put an sve radiator in new radiator suport with out welding it
What is the part # for the plastic screw/clips holding on the radiator shield at the 2:00 mark
Excellent video.
Question. Is this procedure the same for a '98 Expedition, 5.4 Eddie Bauer?
+R. Sherman This procedure might be different for your application. We do not currently have a how-to video for this particular year, make and model. Thank you for asking! 1AAuto.com
Why did you guys not remove the white plastic sleeve when reinstalling the bottom hose? The replacement I have calls for the plastic to be removed it is only to protect the o rings
It seems to me in this particular demonstration, the fan shroud was broken at the bottom and had clearance enough to clear the fan, I would think it would be easier just to lift the shroud without removing the fan by squeezing it past the fan...great tutorial for removing it, just the same...thanxs.
+Anitone Mamea We appreciate the feedback. Sometimes there are multiple ways to accomplish the same repair.
What kind of oil did you put on the hoses?
Is it possible for you to give me info on the tool used to hold pulley?
Do you guys have video on how to remove/replace fan shroud on a 2004 Ford expedition or f150
+John Clarke We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1AAuto.com
Is it the same for the 99 navigator intech?
No fan removal required for a radiator swap which is why few mechanics do that. If the typical specialty wrenches won't hold a water pump pulley due to the hardware being stuck, you can take a piece of flat stock (1/4" or 5/16" preferred) about two or three feet long (leverage is your friend) then drill two holes to match adjacent pulley bolt holes and an notch ground to clear the fan shaft. I use appropriately long studs (bolts with sufficient thread length say ~1" will do too) with nuts to secure the bar to the pulley hub. That gives you control with ample leverage for a proper wrench (large Crescent style etc) to free the fan. Wrenches are cheap enough to weld a couple feet of rod or flat bar to a big one and that tool mod will serve you well elsewhere. Remember most tools are made for considerations like easy shipping which don't apply in-shop so I don't hesitate to modify mine.

I got one from autozone everything lines up but the transmission cooler lines won't screw in. Anyone know if each model has a different size? I have the 4.6 engine.
On the 4.6 there is a 1" core and 2" core option, the cooler fittings are different for each size.
Does anyone know if all the F150 Radiators from 1997 to 2003 are the same ?
It appears not. In the video it’s a two core radiator. (Two rows). I’ve got a 1998 4.6L and mine has a single core. I just ordered a new single core to replace mine. From the research I’ve done it depends more where you live. I live up North in Canada and we’ve got extreme cold in the winter and short summers that don’t get terribly hot. If I upgraded to 2 cores my truck might struggle to throw heat in the cab in the winter. The first core will do about 70% of the cooling the second core 30%. If you’re in a hot climate or you tow frequently you might benefit from a 2 core.
Is this a similar procedure for a 2006 Expedition?
+Erik McNeice This will be a similar installation.
I’m struggling so bad to get the high pressure lines back into the radiator what am I doing wrong
So, if it's a 4.6, it will use the 2 row radiator?
Ok mine a bit different on the transmission lines mine snap on but I've been trying to get them to snap on for the past three days now and they still won't snap on I have the right radiator for it but I'm understand how it's not snapping on any help plz wud much be appreciated
I have a 03 with the quick connection for the transmission lines but can't get them off
Wd40
They make a special disconnect tool especially for the radiator get it any parts store then what I did is remove those fittings and put it on the new on the new radiator
LOWER RADIATOR HOSE QUESTIONS: Most Fords of this era have that lower radiator twist to remove connection. In that case you need to remove the white piece of plastic on the NEW radiator and use the hose with the metal barb on the inside, twist and bend tab. The new radiator should have two new "O" rings. You will notice he left that white plastic on the lower radiator outlet. I think this is ONLY safe to do when there are two "O" rings underneath that white piece of plastic. Of course with the "O"rings present, the white collar can be used with a standard spring clamp. Someone please reply an let me know your opinion or experience.
if you have a 1 row will a 2 row be a direct bolt in replacement
+william smith Thanks for watching! It could be, but you will want to make sure the part is listed to fit your vehicle first. 1aauto.com
Where can I get the o-rings that go on the bottom of radiator at house T
Why did you guys replace the radiator? I might need to replace mine because I was flushing my radiator because the coolant turned to to a rust color but while i was flushing I got some on me and it felt like oil and smells like transmission fluid. Please help me
I have a 2003 expedition 4.6 ..
Is the same procedure ?
+Mike Serrano The 2003 Expedition does have a different radiator than what is pictured in the video. The install may be a similar procedure, but at this time we do not have an exact install video for your vehicle.
@@1AAuto ok thanks a lot ...
@@uc2low did you replace your 03 radiator?
@@jfbtimes2 yes i did it
In that situation. It's good to go ahead and replace your water pump...
Is for a customer I believe
With the updated rad you need to buy the updated lower hose with the quick connect. Just going over the lower outlet like they did in this video will lead to issues with leaks later on. Either the lower hose will get chafed from the knife edge locks or that plastic ring with deteriorate. Its a dumb design from Ford but ever worse they are forcing you to buy expensive lower hoses to make the adaption work.
Hi, my f150 is a 2003 and recently I've been having an over heating problem, I just flushed the radiator fluid, and put new fluid in, and also just changed my oil, for they were both very dark,(my family suggested to do so thinking it one of the two that was causing the over heating) but now I have a loud ticking/clanking sound when reaching high speeds in any gear, in the passenger side of the engine bay, if you could help me so I don't have to spend thousands of dollars to try and fix this, what would be your professional opinion on the matter?
+Mathew Castleberry Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to diagnose something like that. You may want to bring it to a local mechanic to find out what is wrong. Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
50/50 or or straight.🤔
I have a 2004 but this radiator looks like mine…. They have tried to give me a skinny radiator but mine is thick like this one
Here to say, I Heated up where it threads into the radiator and just unscrewed that part and left the quick connect attached. make sure to spray with pb blaster.
+West S Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
They put this radiator in the 2004 model….. what’s the part number for that radiator
I want to buy a radiator suport with a new radiator I dont want a stock radiator
You don't need to take the fan out
That was the worst description of refilling the coolant and bleeding the air out which seems to be a very critical part of this entire job as a lot of people are having problems getting the air pockets out
Bypass the transmission lines don’t use the radiator to cool off the transmission oil instead install a external transmission cooling system it will safe you thousands in transmission repair on the long run it was a bad design thanks to ford
+alolipa Thanks for the tip! We'll pass this info along to our production team.
