They're not unconnected. When you tell a corny joke and the other person laughs, it makes you feel satisfied. But Abby's good at keeping a straight face, which makes Alan more desperate and say increasingly-ridiculous things... which causes him to break.
He would never get to that point against Andrew or Matt because they would probably laugh at the first joke.

This for me is BY FAR the funniest episode of YeahMad’s Dad Jokes, we never get to see Alan’s drunk side since he’s so good at not laughing but seeing him drunk is a f*cking masterpiece
I had the exact opposite experience, it's my least liked one. I liked the actual jokes, just didn't like Alan being drunk and overextending each joke forever.
It was great at the start but it got a little tried at the end when all the jokes took 3 minutes because of his antics.
