thanks for all of your amazing work! you have no idea how much you are helping icelandic college students passing their classses. you are truly an icon. mér þykir endalaust vænt um þig
Wow, been reading the saga of Burnt Njál since I was 19 and now I am 42. There are still so many parts that give me chills. Your recap has helped me really put together the names. I am writing the lyrics to a black metal song based on the burning and I think you have helped me be able to complete it. Thank you!
Doc! I’ve just got back from a study abroad in iceland focusing on the sagas, and I have to say i’ve caught the bug! Your channel and translation of the poetic edda have really sucked me down the rabbit hole and its wonderful, keep up the great work!
Thank you Dr Crawford for these wonderful video stories. It is good to hear them in contemporary English as I have read them in older translations which, at times, can be confusing. After this Saga I wonder where you will take us next?
The family sagas are surely the first example of the modern novel, prose structure, foreshadowing, - Kári as the flaming log- and a slap on Hallgerðurs cheek sealing Gunnars fate, classic motifs and story structure. While there is likely some real events that this story is based on, like the burning of Bergþórshvoll along with the people inside, the saga is written by someone who was using foreshadowing and symbolism in the 13th or 14th century
I'm a little confused about what the goðar did.. I've heard several sources say there were no religious leaders or temples (except maybe the one in Uppsala and some others). A goði was just a chieftain role, right? Perhaps with religious role like as a side job or am I mistaken. And did temples for any worship exist in Iceland? Did the goðar run them? Love your channel Dr. Jackson! I'm proud to contribute to your Patreon :)
The office of goði originally had some religious responsibilities (Hrafnkell is "Freysgoði" for instance), including responsibilities for a temple and sacrifices, but over time its secular meaning in Iceland (of something like "judge/chieftain") became dominant and it continued to be used after the conversion for that secular office. However, its originally more religious meaning can be seen just in the fact that it's formed from the word "god" ("goð"), and the feminine equivalent, "gyðja," means "priestess." Surely there were temples, though unfortunately the sagas' descriptions of them are not usually considered historically trustworthy.
Thank you for the clarification. Sometimes with nordic history more answers lead to more questions but this helps me with my research. Much appreciated!

Please dr Crawford, come visit Scandinavia! Many of us would come to see you. :) Hälsningar från Sverige! :)
...and please also come to Iceland . Maybe now 2024? If you ever came then I missed it.
Thank you. 🌞
