      Yeah this wasnt some casual issue to solve, it was basically the difference between flash-killing a 100-trillion lifeforms including the flood or stopping it. Theres also the forerunner books that clarify what the flood are and their goals. The last time the rings were fired it was about revenge from the dessicated and reborn precursors but they knew life would be rebirthed due to the conservation efforts of the librarian and therefor their plan could continue long after their forerunner's collapse. This time, the galaxy would be left essentially in a permenently dead state.

    I believe that what he means by "that secret dies with the rest" is the human's relationship with the forerunners and forerunner technology, since the line immediately before that it "I admit, I need your help," which is his response to Johnson's "Can't start your own party" quip.

    • @Schneeregen_

      I believe the line is about the Prophets' lies about the Great Journey, since Mercy, Truth, and Regret, all knew the truth about Halo since before the events of CE, which is why they adopted these names. This means they also knew that humans are the forerunners as shown by Truth's "Gods must be Strong" speech, though this was retconned sometime after Halo 3.
      To me it makes since that the "secret" he refers to is the coverup that the prophets orchestrated in an attempt to maintain control of the Covenant.

      No.
      In Contact: Harvest, the book that describes the start of the Human Covenant war, the Prophets are told that Humans *are* Reclaimers by the Forerunner AI in the Keyship. This means that the Humans *are* the Forerunner descendants, and that it would be possible to be left behind by the Great Journey. This would *destroy* the Covenant's religion, and by extension the power structure that Truth, Regret, and Mercy, then minor officials, are planning to take control of.
      The Prophets plan to exterminate humanity in order to keep their relationship to the Forerunners secret.
      At no point do the Prophets indicate that they actually know that the Rings are just weapons of mass destruction. So, yes, the secret that "dies with the rest" is that the Humans are Forerunners (as confirmed by Guilty Spark in his boss battle) not that the Rings actually kill people.

      @@Delta-es1lg Yes and no. Humans are not Forerunners, They are entirely different species. Humans are Reclaimers, a term that means they were designated to inherit the Mantle of Responsibility, essentially a badge that shows that you are the best species and should govern and protect the rest. This is why only Humans can activate Halo. The Forerunners only entrusted the Reclaimers with that responsibility. When the Prophets were told of humans by the Mendicant Bias fragment, they misinterpreted it to mean that humans were Forerunners that were left behind on the Great Journey.

      @@octolinggrimm6387 This is actually a retcon of the original trilogy, sometime after the release of Halo 3 Bungie or 343 decided to retcon the Forerunners into being a completely seperate species from humanity. In Halos 1-3 Humans *are* Forerunners, this is hinted at in CE with Spark's speech at the start of Two Betrayals, alluded to in 2 when Regret says "this time, none of you will be left behind" which is in reference to the firing of Halo, and it's confirmed in 3 with Spark, Regret, *and* the Gravemind all referring to Humanity as Forerunners. Many people will claim that the Halo 3 terminal of the Librarian expressing gratitude, about being able to preserve a planet before the Flood overtake it, as proof that Humans and Forerunners are seperate species because the Librarian says the inhabitants are special, but that doesn't prove anything other than the fact that a biologist is a fan of biology.
      Given that this is a discussion of different interpretations of Regret in Halo 3, it makes sense to discuss it based on the canon of Halo 3, as it is in game, as opposed to how the writers decided to change it later on.
      P.S. The religious symbolism of Halos 1-3 works much better when observed through the lense of Humanity and Forerunners being one and the same. For instance, there's great irony in the fact that the Covenant are slaughtering their own Gods.

    So! Insofar as Gravemind stopping to infect Delta Halo, that's all been elaborated on in some extended universe stuff. Gravemind DID attempt to spread across the rest of Delta Halo, but the bulk of the Sangheili separatist fleet stayed behind to enforce a quarantine, glassing huge sections of the ring to contain the Flood. This is alluded to in a line of dialogue that you can only hear in singleplayer during Floodgate, where the Arbiter talks to one of the spec-ops elites who drops in; paraphrased, the Arbiter asks about what happened to their "fleet of hundreds", to which the other elite replies that the single ship that hit Earth was all that managed to break through the blockade, which also conveniently explains why the Shipmaster's fleet was less than a dozen ships strong going through the portal at Voi; that small force was all that he was willing to pull away from the quarantine.

      So we're still going to ignore the situation at earth which no longer has its Sangheili saviors (Earth having the only known and/or active portal to the Ark), the fact that that single ship was indeed not all that managed to escape as High Charity is very much here, which itself implies there could be any number of infected planets strewn throughout the galaxy by now, AND the part from Halo 2 where Cortana was supposed to blow up In Amber Clad's reactor to kill the Gravemind?

Most notably on Earth as that's the most likely route for the Flood to take to get to the Ark if not the only possible path.
      B: That's not what the Flood are. The Precursors didn't make them as a test, they became the Flood on accident while trying to escape the Forerunners' genocidal campaign against them. You could argue there might be some cosmic sense of revenge against the Forerunners and their successors, but that's stretching the truth just a bit.

Is this a regular occurrence? How does he know that Chief is even still on the continent after getting picked up by a Pelican, let alone which hidden rebel, sorry, UNSC base he's in? It's worth noting here that Pelicans are orbit capable so for all he knows he could be half way to Neptune by now.
      Also, if he knows where they are, which he shouldn't, why not glass their position from orbit? He has ships only a few kilometers away and excavation beams would be more than capable of reducing this base to nothing no matter how deep it goes. They've excavated further over a larger area in the span of 48 hours and that's with a city in the way. It's not like the UNSC has the ships to contest them right now either after being thrashed in orbit twice over. Unless they're hiding some big fuck-off anti-capital ship CE magnum in the jungle somewhere there is nothing stopping Truth from turning them into costume jewelry. Though at this point, I'd almost take the Magnum theory.

    The reason Cortanas Index works is because the literal ring you see in halo 3 is sparks replacement ring, one that would obviously match the design and property of it's predecessor, so that Spark doesn't have to learn new things in order to administrate and operate it. This is also explained when Spark is learning about the Ark, when he himself even says that is creators wisely limited his knowledge to only his installation. Good video.

    • @leftwardglobe1643
      @leftwardglobe1643 Год назад +2

      I see, so when logging into my account after retrieving it from a hacker I shouldn't change the password. Spark needs to know where the Index is stored, not what it contains. We either have the plot as shown or we have Forerunners who know basic cyber security. Not both.

    • @omegatuna2056
      @omegatuna2056 Год назад +6

      @@leftwardglobe1643 I don't think it's too hard to understand the situation here. Spark was not retrieving his ring from a hacker. He was receiving an exact replacement of his ring. Exact to the degree that none of his protocols that he often refers to would be obsolete. Otherwise a replacement spark would be issued as well. The index's code would otherwise be indifferent to the index this replacement ring would produce.

    • @leftwardglobe1643
      @leftwardglobe1643 Год назад

      @@omegatuna2056 In the event that a ring is destroyed or worse; captured, say, by Mendicant Bias as seen in the Forerunner novels with Zeta Halo and used by the Flood (Mendicant Bias also existed and switched sides in the Halo 3 terminals, so there's no arguing that this isn't a danger when not considering 343 canon either), why would you not generate a new index to be used that differs in terms of software? It is, afterall, a glorified USB stick with a digital password and startup program. Nothing has to change with Spark, his protocols, or the Ring for that matter. But this is a basic security measure that wasn't taken for... some reason?
      Again, basic cyber security. If you have one breach you should always take measures to prevent the opposition from using information gleaned from it to assault your system again. When the enemy has the password to a galactic scale superweapon, this is paramount.

    • @omegatuna2056
      @omegatuna2056 Год назад +1

      @LeftwardGlobe16 That makes more sense. Your original response was a bit confusing since I hadnt understood how extensive the corruption would be. That definitely makes sense, and I certainly agree.
      But why change the index if the location of it wont be changed? Its basic cybersecurity yes, but unneeded. If the contents are irrelevant to Spark, and only the location is important. Then the need for a newly generared index would be weird since its still just as you put it, a glorified USB, and its location doesnt change, and changing location would result in spark needing new protocols, maps, and etc.
      As for capturing a ring, well, the ring was being made by the Arc in halo 3 as you probably know. A previous location only known through name, not where it was so the Flood was not present yet. Not even the rings contained the location (I believe), only referenced. It seems odd the flood would activate the rings, and Mendicent was on their side at the time, so he wouldnt either. Its weird for any sentient race to do so, since it is in fact the destruction of theirs and many other civilization, and activating them is still a win to the Forerunners since they likely dont care at all if they're activated, its not their civilization afterall.
      As for a software update, I absolutely agree, that should've been like, obvious to the Forerunners and instated, but with how easy Cortana got the Index, I doubt the Arc could have generated anything else complex since it's just doing as it was told by the Forerunners many years ago, like the Rings. I doubt the Forerunners saw a point since they assumed it eradicated most if not all of the Flood, along with all of life, soon to be reseeded.

    I think Truth genuinely believe only those worthy were sent to the Divine Beyond to be gods. He genuinely believes the Forerunners cleansed the galaxy of the Flood and the “weak” and left them behind.
    High Charity didn’t go thru the Portal at Voi. The Gravemind learned the location of the Ark with the ship it crashed on Earth and the covenant forces it assimilated, and used the ridiculously powerful slipspace drives of High Charity to jump to the Ark. That’s why it arrives nearly a day late, because even with the power of High Charity it was nothing compared to the power of the the Forerunners and the portal at Voi. But even with the portal, it took the Allied Fleet nearly two weeks of real time to arrive at the Ark. The Gravemind used High Charity to escape the quarantine around Delta Halo, jumped to Sol, and then after learning of the location of the Ark immediately jumped to it. Why the Gravemind just didn’t immediately kill John and Thel, it didn’t know their plan. It let them leave like Darth Vader does the Millennium Falcon in Episode 4. In Cortana it spends the entire level taunting John and railing against him to try and learn the plan. It doesn’t know Cortana still has an Index. As soon as you confirm she still has the Index, the Gravemind says “at last! Her secret is revealed!” And that’s when it really steps up its attempts to kill John and secure the Index. Only it was too late. The reactors of High Charity detonated and the Gravemind was scattered into various disparate intelligences and struggled to reconstitute itself while John and Thel stormed the Control Room of Installation 08. That’s why it throws everything it has at John and Thel in the final mission. Its last dialogue is “Like Water I ebb and flow. Defeat is the addition of time to a sentence I never deserved but you imposed.” That’s when it is whole again on The Ark and realizes it’s about to be cleansed again. It resigns itself to temporary defeat but knows that it will somehow make a return.

He wants to be the only one who knows the truth in the Covenant, because once the secret gets out the Covenant’s entire religious belief and by extension entire political structure would collapse.

    I think the message you get from Cortana at the end of floodgate actually *was* a flood trap because there was no way she knew about the new ring because even spark didn't know. And she also mentioned her that her plan didnt include firing the rings, but you *do* end up firing a ring. Since we never find out what her actual "plan" was, and she didnt tell us when we saved her, lord hood was correct in thinking the message was a flood trap.
