hi
Oh it's the real pewdiepie and not some random cash app crypto bot
When are you going on Trash Taste, Felix?
I’m glad you liked it 😁

As someone who watches Vintage/Historical YTbers, I would LOVE to see more videos related to vintage Japan. Can't wait for the beauty products and gadget testing videos
Can you give me some recommendations for Vintage/Historical YTers? I love watching them so I'm curious if you know of ones I don't already watch!
as someone interested in that content too, may i ask for any channel recs?
@@alskarmode me too!
I'm interested in it too!! Can you recommend some channels?
@@neena18 i can recommend Rachel Maksy, Karolina Żebrowska, Bernadette Banner, English Heritage (for Mrs Crocombe content), Mina Le, Xiran Jay Zhao, Absolute History, Dr. Colleen Darnell and maybe (but a slight stretch) Saifya Nygaard
(unless you meant specifically japanese vintage channels, then sorry if i misunderstood!)
The Japanese in the 80s were doing already what you're doing rn. Early Showa era themed retro Japan vibes also American oldies (50s-60s) became very popular in Japan in early to mid 80s. That's the reason why they brought back ramune soda bottle back (all bottled soft drinks in Japan got replaced by canned drinks and ramune bottle had completely disappeared once) and they decided not to discontinue dagashi (early showas children's snacks) like Umaibo, bonta ame and chiroru chocolate as retro snacks.
Yeah america did that too lol
The recursion of nostalgia!
Actually with rotary phones we had to pick up the hand receiver and THEN dial. Love this room. I'm a 70s baby but love vintage/retro 30s-50s American version of this. The amount of storage in this room is crazy! Love all those cabinets, and your decorating is adorable. I'd love to hang out in a room like that.
Yeah i noticed that aswell as im a kid from that area... 74' model here to be honest..
@@chilliwaterlickingecko5113 1957 model here...
Yep, still he was close enough, lol. 77 model here.
@@lizzym8773 yeah.. close didn't get through thoo.. 8 point on trying .. 🤣🤦🏾♂️
@@SpeedyMercer some nice cars came out that year also ..👍🏽
I think it's good for this kind of video that Joey is a bit more vocal instead of being a more silent camera man. It's very enjoyable to hear the interaction between you two!
Wow, so Aki and Joey have a Showa-era style room, Chris Broad has a Showa-era cyberpunk inspired ramen shop alleyway, the bubble nostalgia is back, and THAT'S RAD.
I love the retro aesthetic of the whole room, it's like you travel back in time when you enter it. Great job!
When I was in elementary school in the Netherlands we also had really small bags because we didn't take any books home so we basically just took a lunchbox to school and like sometimes took back a letter for your parents or something. So maybe if old Japanese backpacks were also too small to fit any books maybe they were just not supposed to.
@@micahthemessy I think in my school we didn't even have individual books, they just kept enough for everyone in a bookshelf in the classroom.
Gamera is well known among Mystery Science Theater fans in the states. They featured a few of the dubbed movies on that show.
Gamera! Gamera!
Gamera is really neat!
Gamera is filled with meat!
We've been eating Gamera!
wait aki, please show us japanese thrift stores!
It's time to watch Aki make a thrift shop outfit
Instead of LGR Thrifts, it's AKI Thrifts.
I have to say as someone who grew up on the west coast US, in the late 90's/early 2000's, I saw Kewpie dolls in vintage media and antique/novelty shops. They were always referred to as Kewpie dolls. My parents also called them that and when I asked they told me "It was just an old style of doll that was really popular." I also feel like I remember seeing someone say it was somehow based on the word "cutesy" but my brain could be fabricating that memory, since I don't remember where I heard it.
I never heard anyone refer to them as mayonnaise babies.
Even after having heard about Kewpie mayo, it took me YEARS to put together that they were the same Kewpie.
Born in 1970 in the UK, I actually had a Kewpie doll as a small child. Didn't know there was a Japanese mayonnaise until much much later.
The doll actually had a sad end, I left her on the fireguard (because small children don't understand that heat and plastic do not mix) and her face half melted. :( For some reason my mother kept her and stored her in one of our linen baskets. Always a fun find if you were looking for linen. Thanks for the terrifying memories, Mum.
Aki’s room just looked so eclectic. It truly reflects her personality. I don’t get too see many retro vintage room tours, so I’m glad we got one today.
11:04 You have to pick up the handset before using the rotary dial if you want to make a call on that phone.
Omg the nostalg factor is REAL! I was born in Showa so my earliest exposure to Japanese culture (what little there was back then) all came from that time. It's so beautiful, Aki! Great job!
Same here. I shall refer to myself as vintage. Grew up using the same radio. Remember it sitting in dad's office.
I am shocked atm… that Dororo manga is the exact one my father gave me when I was a kid and read to me, to this day it’s one of my favourite Japanese story’s and I even plan on getting a tattoo of Hyakimaru soon. Anyways I haven’t seen the art of that front in years so thanks for the random cool nostalgia
The new Dororo anime is one of my top favorite anime with one piece 💕🥰
@@moonsun6161 it was a great watch! was glad they kept it so to the manga and how the visuals and story was told from it was an amazing way to do so!
Yes LOVE Dororo
I must be very old when I say I remember all when I was growing up. I remember having to answer that phone for my aunt and grandma. The tv with only 12 channels. I love the new aesthetics🥰
This was essentially a history lesson, thank you! I've definitely heard of the Showa era but never had I known what time period it was for. This was great, and I look forward to the product tests of the things in the room.
LOVE the vintage room.Aki,you were just so excited to show this off,and I 100% understand!I can't wait for more additions to it with updates. All my vintage American stuff has been packed away in boxes by my husband because he thought it was "Just junk!"
Time to get a better husband tbh
@@alskarmode Nah.I wouldn't give up my marriage for material stuff. Not like the items were tossed in the garbage. They're just in the attic stored away. What he thinks of mine as junk,I think of it as isn't,and what he thinks of his items that isn't junk,I think it is junk.
Seeing Goji and Ultraman getting some representation makes my heart swell 💗
I can wholeheartedly blame Godzilla for my obsession with Japan
Edit: the Gamera poster looks to be of the 1995 film Gamera: Guardian of the Universe
Adored the room!!! Minor complaint, only one Godzilla poster was the Showa era. Loved seeing the classic Ultraman figures!!!! Seriously you did a great job on the room Aki 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
The room looks absolutely amazing, the retro feel and aesthetic is beautiful. Love those movie posters too!
1:38 - omg, I'm from Poland and my grandparents had this material on the walls as a decoration exactly in the same way. I've never seen it in any other house. Surprised it was used like that in Japan too.
Tell me Im lying, the best thing about this video is Aki’s cute & colorful outfit
From a dude who has loved the vintage American Rockabilly vibe for a while, this is such a treat
This video has such a vibe into it , it makes me nostalgic for something I have never experience 😩
Note with the dail phone you pickup the handset before you dail the number😊
I love the retro aesthetic of the room Aki! The Showa style is my favorite style! In addition, I also like the Heisei style as well!
City pop was big during this period and I love a lot of songs from the Showa period! Miracle Love by Mariya Takaeuchi is one of my favorite songs!
I live how much joy all the little trinkets bring you
Cute you have your own time capsule room. If you ever come to my house, you will see a lot of more of victorian vibe with our furniture from relatives. My grandparents had rotary phones in the 80s I remember playing with them when I was little. By the way a tatami would not last in my house with the dog and cat.
Aki did a fantastic job on this room! (When I saw the little Astro Boy figure near the TV I let out a little happy gasp I love him so much)
I think if im right he would have been also known as Atomboy .. yeah?
@@chilliwaterlickingecko5113 - Mighty Atom is what he’s called in Japan.
My kind of Vibe, and I'd love to see more of the Japan thrifting footage!
12:55 Yoooooo back then when I was young our home has the same clock, holy shit, it rings every time when it hits 12 o'clock, my god all the childhood memories just came rushing in, never thought I would see this again after 20 plus years in my adulthood and who would've known these were iconic clocks
As someone who lived in this period (but the SE Asian version), a lot of your stuff brought back a lot of memories for me. We had a lot of the same items (TV, phone, fan, some of the same toys, similar posters, and knick-knacks, etc.). Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
I grew up with one of those Seikosha/Regulator clocks on the wall. The chimes haunt me, but I love it. I recently had a horologist repair the mechanism and adjust it before giving it back to my parents.
I would have to say I’m impressed, especially the vintage rotary phone, it’s kinda like the one that my grandma(may she Rest In Peace) used a lot 🥰🥰🥰
this is so nostalgic when i was younger i loved some of this stuff 😭
Omg! I used to play with that exact Monchichi doll at my grandparents house as a kid! They also had a tiny version of it too, like barely half the size of this one.
My aunt got them when she was a kid.
I'm from Sweden, so I just found it really cool to actually recognise something from this video.
Thanks for this post! I didn't know the name was Monchichi. I'm looking for one for a friend.
@@stephanieok5365 I hope you'll find one! 😄
Holy hell that Monchhichi brings back memories. My friends and family are black but for some reason I always saw a stuffed Monchhichi on a shelf or a small figurine in my and their grandparents houses. I never knew the name of it and I don't know why it became so popular in my community but I always saw one.
I feel very nostalgic for all the Technology in this showa room despite being a young gen z teenager bcuz back when i was younger around 2013 my family was still using a dial phone and a black and white TV that still worked fine and broadcasted then, and the astro boy and doraemon figures just fueled the nostalgic fire bcuz of the tagalog dubs of those animes that aired on Tv
I especially like the newer stuff you bought that fit in to the aesthetic like the clock and the calendar 😊
✨AKI!✨
This is so AWESOME! I love vintage/era themes. It really does look great. It also really shows that you put in time and care to make it truly special. You found some great finds. It would be cool if you could get photos of your families from that era and get vintage frames. Maybe, you could even get some retro clothes and could have a photo shoot of yourselves from each of those decades!
Thatis super showa awesome , ive been building a Showa diorama for around 2 and half years now and not yet finished, watching Tora San helps a lot. Its amazing that you got some original artifacts which are quite hard to find these days ,Everyone shoul have a Retro room you did a great job,
I have a monchichi from when I was a kid that my mom passed onto me from one of my sisters. It was from the 70s or 80s in Pennsylvania! That’s so fun to know it was a thing in both places!
oh wow! this is so cool! 😍this by far, is the most unique room tour i've seen from foreign creators based in Japan. what a way to showcase embracing Japanese culture in the home.
Very cool room. Wonderful attention to detail. With the phone, you need to pick up the receiver before you dial. When the receiver goes down it ends the call. You also needed to listen for the dial tone before you started dialling, which was a low Geiger-counter hum in the UK. No dial tone, no connection. As kids in the 80s, we used to spend hours pretending to make calls on those things... thank crap computers came along 😄 Another weird quirk about dial phones is that, if you had more than one in the house, connected to the same line, all you had to do was pick up the other receiver to listen in on the conversation. Though there was a click if you replaced the receiver halfway through, which told people someone had been listening. Say a friend called for you and you were upstairs, but your mum picked up the phone in the kitchen, she'd shout up the stairs 'It's for you!' then you'd pick up the upstairs receiver and shout down 'Got it!' and they'd hang up the receiver downstairs. It was a different world.
My grandparents had something like this but for Americana in their basement. Loved going there as a kid.
Monchichi was really big in Sweden during the eighties, along with the smurfs.
11:18 You pick up the reciever before dialing the number or you would only get a dial tone.
Same in Canada, in the 80s I remember seeing Monchichi (and Smurfs) everywhere 😁
Heck I grew up in the 90’s and I remember seeing those dolls in stores. I also think my big sister had one at one point.
Remember those too in the Netherlands, slightly creepy worldwide
Me and my wife collect American mid century, 80s and 90s stuff. Im slowly collecting more Showa era stuff to mix in. Your guys collection is epic! Cheers my dudes!
The clak clak clak of that TV just sent me tf back to the early 90s when I had a little TV like that in my bedroom. I was like 6 or 7. ❤️
OMG... I actually screamed at the beginning because my country's flag is there, and since we are a little Central American country, I'm really confused why it's there, but doesn't matter, it's amazing! Greetings from tiny Costa Rica. 🇨🇷
OMG as a brocante/thrifting/vintage object this whole room is giving me life I love it so much
Many products during that era are created to last longer and rarely got broken.
Some we get to used during late 80s and early 90s. Especially the rotary phone. I'm not from Japan but we in south east Asia able to used it.
The room looks so warm and cozy! It's cool to see all the vintage stuff. Awesome job with the set-up!
This showa room radiate so much comfort for someone who has a soft spot for vintage rooms (like me)! Would love to see more of this room in the future ❤️
Dude, the room looks incredible. I love seeing different cultures aesthetics through the decades. And we have one of those old clocks in the video that still works. I don't know if its old enough to fit the decade but it was given to us after my grandfather passed who had it for a while. Its neat to hear about it here.
aaah I love vintage stuff and this room is just perfect. it is a literal time machine. I wish I could have a corner in my future apartment, which just takes me back to a certain era in history.
Instant flashbacks when I saw the rotary phone! I remember having one in my parents' house until I was like 12 which was around 2004. Living on an island that didn't change technology quickly meant we still had a lot of old technology. This was a really cool project, Aki!
the sweets container, we still use them in Malaysia during our Hari Raya/Eid celebration to put cookies and other snacks and served them on the table!
I can help you get that TV working. not me physically since I live on the other side of the world, but you just need to watch this video and you can hook up HDMI to the TV and play anything you want. Do a search for LGR HDMI on a Black & White TV. It will still work in color. You just need to get a few connections to make it work. I'm sure Joey can figure it out.
lol I grew up with one of these TVs and I stumbled on a way to broadcast cable to the TV by unhooking my NES and lazily plugging the cable back into the TV. Just pushed in the center pin and not screwing it in.
I think you should buy lead tests for the glasses and dishes with paint on them because a lot of old vintage glass is painted/printed with lead paint, might not be safe to eat or drink out of
the toy from 7:32 is called a toll (we usually say it in an Afrikaans accent) in south africa but is wayyyy smaller and sometimes people use a shoe lace if they lost the string
Edit: Aki is the ultimate wifu, vet and no one can change my mind (though everybody definitely agrees)
I would have loved to have been in Japan in the 70’s . I have had a fascination with the cultural since I was a child. Thank you for doing this.
How fun. It's nice to see someone appreciate vintage.
Nostalgic. I remembered my grandma had that clock and some of those figures from Joey’s grandma. She would have loved this. I appreciate your work. Can’t wait to see more from this era.
I absolutely LOVE this room! Vintage items interest me a lot and the whole aesthetic of this room is wonderful.
Speaking of retro my parents gave me a bunch of stuff from the 80’s and 90’s (my mom was in high school in the 80’s and my dad in the 90’s) I’m still decorating my room but I have a lot of posters of bands, cd’s, still have to find that rotary phone and a bunch of other cool things from that time :)
Bless you for your attempts (most, if not all, spot on) of covering my childhood of experiences of Japan in the 60'!
I remember we still have that wooden wall scroll thingy at my grandpa’s place. I lover everything vintage and retro so all this lool really cool to me
aww this is so cute!!
That clock is strikingly similar to the one my parents had while I was growing up. Though I believe theirs had a hidden compartment behind the clock face. You'd just pull the left side a bit and it'd open
Grew up in the last part of that era-though in amarica, but still have a deep fondness for that time in history. Always love getting to see stuff from back then!
What a fun idea! Great job on putting the Showa room together. That's awesome.
If anyone is wondering why the TV can't pick up any broadcast signals anymore is because nearly all the TV networks in Japan have shut down their analog broadcasts back in July 20, 2011, the same day the song "PONPONPON" was released on the iTunes Store that had the analog shut down referenced in its music video.
Some of this stuff really took me back to my childhood.
Its my favourite video so far in your channel
The leather school bag could probably be oiled with the appropriate oil, or use some conditioner to extend the life, make the flap less brittle
It's so funny to me that Aki's room would not exist without that fan and that it was so hard to find, because we had like 8 of those fans when I was a kid. I felt like they were everywhere.
I'm a huge Gamera fan, so knowing you have a Gamera poster in this room made me really happy.
In fact, this whole room gives me nostalgia vibes from the Showa Godzilla movies.
I’ve always loved the Showa era aesthetic, using the tatami room is a fantastic idea!
This is totally sick! I've seen pictures of Showa era room floating around the web and always thought they looked quite nice, yeah that fan was definitely a must. I really like that TV as well, the 70's and 80's made such interesting TVs.
Oh man that's so cool! I'm also into collecting vintage items. My stuff is all American though. 1940s-1960s cookbooks/pyrex/decor...I even managed to find two formica tables! I just need some chairs now...I also collect 1980s-1990s stuff from my childhood.
I'm looking forward to seeing more videos about this room!
I love the overall aesthetic of this room so much!! You put it together so well 🫶🏻
All it needs is the crazed stalker from Perfect Blue
I’m glad you showa’d it to us.
The room turned out very cute! I love that you have some old stuff from family there too
This is AMAZING! I adore the historical content of this channel.
Very cute. I like what you did with it. May I make a suggestion? Colleen brand coloring pencils were huge with girls in that era. They put really pretty shoujo art on the packages and marketed them for girls. Many featured the popular shoujo manga artist Makoto Takahashi. They're super cute!
for the red tv you should get a converter box to play games on it or watch old movies!
I'm glad to see that y'all are well and healthy 💙💙
Oh dang, a Monchichi! My aunt (who is mentally disabled sadly) has a few of them and absolutely adores them!
I'm Scandinavian and I watched the Gamera movies on Canal+ ,which is like a French premium channel, when I was like 10 years old in the late 90s. They definitely made it outside of Japan, it's just that Godzilla was the only one that really stuck in the west :p
Please do more and more videos about the Showa room, i love retro/vintage from japan!
I like your room. I especially liked your Astroboy (Mighty Atom). Back in the 60s in California they used to run in the afternoon after school. The original Astro boy ad ensures which were in Black and White...
🥰😍 Loved it!!! You know it's legit when you see Dororo in the mix! Very impressive! 😎👍Would love to see what you add along the way!
I see Ultraman stuff, I hit the Like Button. Well done.
The room turned out so cool! Super cute! I love the old tv. You also look great in the retro style clothing. Nice job Aki! 👏😃 Oh, and I was born in 1980 and had a Monchhichi doll! I loved that thing as a child and had no idea it was a Japanese toy. Their little faces are a bit creepy though, I don’t blame Joey for being weirded out by it 😂
I also remember a Monchichi Saturday morning cartoon!
Ugh I love the retro look in a Japanese room love you aki 🥰 nice video
When I was younger my grandma used to give me some kokishi dolls she had from when she was younger. I have still have them in my room.
0:22, 11:04
Me (29) giggling to myself bc that's not how rotary phones work.
You have to pick up the handle, then dial. That way, if you dial the wrong number, you hang it up to start over.
You have to dial pretty quickly, because if you stop dialing it will start to call after a certain amount of time.
My mom is probably one of the last people to still have, and use, a rotary phone at home. My father insisted on keeping it, he DEEPLY enjoyed watching my friends struggle to figure out how it worked. Now we mostly keep it for nostalgia.
Genuinely want to see a video on home decor and your process behind it. It’s pretty interesting
Ayyyy, now after dining at Chris' Showa-era ramen shop, we can relax at Aki's Showa-era room! I've long thought to myself that if I were able to travel back in time, I'd choose the later half of the Showa era ('60s - '80s).
