This is next level for Larkin Poe... this is a push through to higher plateau... Rebecca's vocals are always emotional but this minor blues 'cry' is Amanda Marshall like in delivery but wholly her own as usual... it's Megan's slide that glues the this thing together... is Rebecca the Paul Rogers of this time?
Thanks for your thoughtful post, Captain. This song is very important; Rebecca is paying tribute to the importance of American music from the South that has nourished them and helped make them the great band they are. They do it with excellence and reverence. They've been at the top of the mountain for a long time. Kin is my favorite album of theirs to date, but some others are close to it, and I can't decide on a best LP album. Their albums are just different levels of good. They've gone from their bluegrass/country kind of sound to a blues rockin' darling over the past ten years. Rebel Yell is out front with her vocals and her commentary, but you hit on something very important. Though Slide Queen is often less forward, she adds such a beautiful blue sound to their songs that very much does hold things together in a unique way. Adding Tyler's guitar work in just enhances the sound even more; he's a killer guitarist for sure. I was thinking the answer to your question about Paul Rodgers was "no", but that comes from my memories of him in Free and Bad Company. Haven't checked out his more recent stuff. Heard he did a tribute to Muddy Waters back in the '90's. Out of curiosity, I'll have to check him out some more. Do you have any recommendations that make the comparison to Rebecca?
@@audiophileman7047 I don't know about the Paul Rodgers comparison but I've been placing Larkin Poe collectively with the likes of Warren Haynes or Ry Cooder since shortly after my first exposure to the band. They have a deep knowledge of and appreciation for multiple musical genres and use that as a springboard for their creativity. In a way, Rhiannon Giddens comes to mind as well.
@@jankafka7330 Though they're different, I can really see the connection you're making with Ry Cooder. Ry Cooder was born and raised in Southern California. He wasn't brought up in the South. Rebecca and Megan are real Southern people. They grew up hearing some of America's finest Southern music and they did have exposure to classical music from their mom and quality rock music from their dad. Add all of those things together with their talents, you can really understand how they're moving forward with such fine music. I really enjoy their blues covers. I'll listen to the originals, and then theirs, and they're so successful at making those classics sound fresh and new with their instrumentation and vocals. Even their blues originals are simply excellent. From their humble beginnings as bluegrass musicians to their current blues rock swagger, they're growing and developing. I really like how they blend elements from different styles of music. So glad that they're independent, because they can concentrate on making great music as best as they can. To them it's all about the music, and I really love their enthusiasm for the music they play together. I see many more years of fine, interesting music from the blues sisters.
I love these gals. Adding the Hammond sound sounds awesome and works fabulously with the vocals. How about some badassed sax in the mix too. Too Chicago? Maybe. I just love these gals.
