  • I made this up to date guide after following the document supplied by the Pajero Forum Guru called Saar. I following his fantastic guide on how to repair a stuck horn on a Pajero/Montero and was so excited it worked I decided to document it. I didn’t have the rubber bike tube as a separator so had to improvise with a plastic milk carton to seperate the two foil horn contacts.
My vehicle is a Mitsubishi Pajero 2001 V6 3.5 Petrol. When I purchased the vehicle it surprised me that it had recently been registered for 12 months and note FAILED due to the lack of a horn.
The horn did not work and after investigation it appeared the relay was removed because of this constant issue with it continuously honking. There must have been some angry neighbours before for the previous owners so they ditched the fuse to solve it. The problem is no horn is actually illegal so a solution was needed to ensure this Pajero did not fail the meticulous road safety inspection due next Feb.
I found Saar's great RUclips and thought I would make a 2023 version of my own considering the vehicle is now 22 years old and still running. I chose to do the more complex solution 2 whereas those who use the first option to add a switch must get very frustrated having to manually flick a switch on their steering column when trying to sound their horn - it could distract the driver and cause no end of issues if one must takes one’s eyes off the road to toot a horn. I strongly suggest giving this solution 2 a try. There is nothing more satisfying than the success of solving a problem the right way once and for all.
One important thing to note when you are plucking up the courage to attempt this, don’t be put off with the warning signs about the Airbag exploding for so long as you remove both battery terminals nothing will go wrong with the airbag. I feel it was the fear of not knowing the consequences that delayed my effort to take this on. In the end it took about 3.5 hours so make sure you focus.

Thanks for this - I’ll never have a problem with my horn again after watching this.
