One thing I really appreciate about Scott is that he’s willing to call out even his favorite publishers on their garbage, but prevents the discussion from getting too hysterical by not only avoiding letting his criticisms devolve into shouting synonyms for “bad” (other than for older, hard-to-clickbait games like Zip-Lash and Ride to Hell: Retribution, and even then he keeps his review both humorous and analytical), but also by mentioning when he feels like complaints are being blown out of proportion, or when people forget or ignore that seemingly new and scary trends are in fact patterns that we’ve been dealing with just fine for years.
Alright, the part where he's just speechless about the Danganronpa series for like, 20 seconds is golden. I think that's about the only thing you can do to explain how bats**t crazy that series is.

The only reason I got an OLED was because on release day GameStop held a deal where you could trade in your old switch for like $270 of in store credit, use it to buy the OLED, and transfer all your save data right then and there in the store from your old console to the new. I also had the original model with the bad battery life still so even if it wasn’t a huge upgrade it was worth the 80 bones.

It’s weird to say, but I think this video and Barrel Blast looks to be the start of major character development of Scott(the character). I can’t even describe how, but Scott is significantly different at times and when I thought he was going to have one negative reaction, he actually has a positive reaction (ex Shin Megami Tensei, xenoblade, pokemon, losing your virginity) I can’t wait to see where this season goes!
@@MLittleBrony it doesn't come just from that. you're an rpg guy and the funeral touches on themes of "enjoying what you please", but barrel blast fully solidifies this mindset in scott. scott not only longer minds rpgs or funerals, but now sex even though he as a virgin doesn't enjoy it. and this was a big part of scott's personality is that he promoted virginity, as shown in the montage, but now he's fine with people doing it. he's willing to discuss more rpgs in the nintendo switch retrospective videos then he did before. i mean he talked about pokemon bdsp for a lot longer than i ever expected. there's definitely changes to scott's character and his outlook on games.

Great recap. The only thing that he missed that I think was interesting was the Miitopia Mii Maker, how it was super big for a few weeks, and then basically got abandoned. He talked about Miis later with Big Brain Academy and I feel like this really could've led to a Mii renaissance.

i would like to say there is nothing holding monkey ball back due to the engine used, it all depends on how the physics are coded. you can use unity's default physics (which suck) or you can make your own system. if the physics feel off, its not a unity issue, its completely on the devs.
the old games sorta "snap" the stages to full tilt while the remaster has a noticable slow down. Liam Triforce (iirc) has a great video on SMB and mentions this.
The best unity games are the ones you don't realize they're in unity until the logo shows up in the credits. Sadly most companies push unity on their devs because they can just use the base parts like the default physics instead actually either replacing them with a better fitting system or at least fine tuning it for the game.

It’s really accessible to new developers since it’s free and you don’t need a beast of a pc to run it unlike unreal engine and also lots of tutorials, so new developers who don’t really know what they’re doing use it and make shit games and people think it’s unity’s fault

It’s like expecting people to carve engines out of solid metal blocks before they build the car. That would be absolutely insane. You can just use another engine that someone already mass produced for you.

I’m going to be legit sad when the Switch era ends. This is the last Nintendo console that came out before i graduated. I’m having less and less time to play games but the few hours i put at them bring me tons of joy. I hope i can have time for the Switch 2.
i get you. the switch came out my first year of university, and since I'm still in grad school, the Switch has pretty much defined by post-secondary education. i honestly can't even imagine the Switch era ending at this point.

This was a joy to watch. I really like this series. Just wrapping up a whole year in sections is a great way to look back. This year felt pretty monotone for me. I wasn't over hyped for anything and as a pokemon fan PLA was cool but BDSP felt janky. Kirby was incredible. Kingdom hearts being cloud versions was the biggest let down for me though.
Game Builder Garage was honestly a great idea on their part. It’s such a fun experience for younger kids who are genuinely interested in programming. My little brother loves it, and I have a friend with young siblings who had a blast for months and months on end with it.
i agree! i played it myself for a good while there, and it's nothing groundbreaking but it's fun to play around with! you can tell this wasn't ever supposed to be Nintendo's next big thing, but it's a neat $30 game that is worth the value for what it is!

I have to agree that I'm tired of how Nintendo has decided to do "post-release support". Nintendo took this concept of supporting a game after release with new updates to keep it fresh and the community alive, and instead used it to release unfinished games that they then slowly rolled out the rest of the content for. They either completely misunderstood the point, or they're deliberately just being stingy while pretending like they're being generous. I'd rather they just not bother with content updates and give us complete games on release.

That was my thought when i bought my switch two years ago, like Zelda BOTW is a decent game but it's been out so long...why is it still the same price as it was on release... I mean like even God of War or Uncharted 4 were heavily discounted, even free at some point, and those were also console selling titles...

Scott clearly never found the additional Mii customisation in Miitopia. The game wasn’t really a Mii game anymore because it lets you turn your Mii into literally anything, people added a realistic Gex with hair, the future is now!

With Skyward Sword, the "Hold L to turn the camera" was really annoying, but I loved the button controls otherwise. The motion controls with my brand new joy cons were absolute dog shit, and I never had a problem with its Wii motion controls. Handheld or pro controller for the switch version is definitely the best way to play this game, for me.
I was having an awful day. Just really struggling badly. Saw this and was instantly a bit happier, and had my mind transported to the place that is scotts world. Thank you so much for giving me an escape every week or so from all of life.

I've been sitting in a hospital waiting room for 12 hours now, waiting for results on my blood and heart condition. It is currently after 6 in the morning where I am now and a mixture of boredom and sleep depravity is driving me nuts. But I do want to thank you for getting me through about 2 and a half hours of this grief.
Man five years have really passed by like it was yesterday. Switch really did done a lot of things over the years. Some are good and some are not so good. Here’s to another five years for this hybrid.
It’s interesting to see Scott (and others) say that PAC-MAN 99 was super easy to get 1st place in but Tetris 99 was hard, it was the absolute opposite for me. It took me about a month of sessions to finally get my first (and only) win in PAC99, but I can consistently win in Tetris 99. It really goes to show that even when it comes to old arcade games, people can have vastly different skills.
Oh breakout, how you will be missed. Not to say the new end theme is bad particularly, I can see it coming more into its own in the future. But that classic outro with that specific part of the song was iconic, and was made the end jokes even better knowing that that iconic tune would come on like a drum rim shot perfectly punctuating the joke!
I already love the new theme far more than the old one! It'll take a bit before the expectation of it after the end joke kicks, but it just feels like a more fitting theme for Scott - especially since it was originally made for him.

The Switch’s lifespan so far started for me from the beginning of Middle School to currently in High School. Things can change within that 5 years to be honest.
It took me a full week to watch this video. How do you do it? It was like watching 30 game reviews all smashed together. Great stuff. Also, my favorite part was the Danganronpa reaction. I couldn't have said it better myself!

With WarioWare, the fact that they made every game completable by every character via different methods was impressive, but it ended up making some micro games either way too annoying or way too easy, based on the game and character. I wish every single character had their *own* micro game collection, and then the “remix” stages could toss random stages at you, making you have to adapt to the sudden character change.
1:44:29 Fun fact about the remakes is that much of the code is directly copied from the original Diamond/Pearl. There were even mods day 1 that required basically 0 changes to work... So yeah, it was definitely rushed and cobbled together, since it was more like a port with a new coat of paint than a remake.

I actually popped off when you got to Neo: the world ends with you. I actually only played the original right after neo was announced, though my brother has been a long time fan and I had thought about playing it before. Most TWEWY fans actually seem to love neo, and I think it's arguably better than the original, though they have different strengths. The original's combat is more unique and ties better to the game's themes, and has a better story, whereas neo is just straight up more fun. I'm glad to hear you're in a similar position to me of "enjoying it despite it being an RPG"

Neo was awesome and I really love it. Square dropped the ball because of their usual "westerners won't like it so let's concentrate our marketing to Japan... who didn't even buy the first game as much as the west" mentality.
Yeah, Wario Ware is a tough one. On the one hand, I couldn't imagine how to go from the games before that relied on gimmicks and hardware specifications, like motion controls, touch screens, microphones, etc... and I was blown away by what they came up with in Get it Together! I tip my hat to Nintendo for that. On the other, the staying power is a bit weaker with this one. However, even if I go back to it fairly less often than with the other games in the series, I still have a blast with it each time.
Even with not as much content as Gold (which is more of a compilation of microgames with a few new ones sprinkled in and full on voice acting in a new story), GiT is still one heck of a good WW game and by far my favourite Switch game of 2021!
Same. I guess after Gold and all that was accomplished, Get it Together kinda had less, but at thebsame time, it was an alright and interesting experience. All the play styles plus all the mini games; it was a very complex game of roulette.
GiT gimmick is excellent and really is fun and unique like any WW, but what kills it for me is how much focus there is on multiplayer. WW has generally been a single player experience. But with GiT you're missing out on half the content if you don't have people to play with. and WW just isn't as easy to have for a party environment, microgames are so face paced and need trial and error I don't think it's inviting for newcomers wanting to play some quick rounds
Scott's reaction to the Danganronpa games is probably the most spot-on reaction to playing them all in a row I've ever seen. The collection is missing the spin-off Ultra Despair Girls though, so it's not technically complete. It's a little bit of a sad fact for me and the other 47 who apparently are the only ones who like that game.
Eh, tbh... although UDG is important from a story perspective, the gameplay is odd, dare I say bad, and some of the content inside is... questionable at best.
@@exyzt9877 I liked it enough to finish it (like the other games it's kinda crazy and occasionally flies off the rails) but I haven't really felt a pull to replay it .It can get a little [insert The Simpsons "eeeoooouh" and shirt-collar-pulling clip here] but it's worth a play if you wanna know how Monokuma got made. Otherwise you can skip it. I assume that's why they left it out.
My god, I watched this all the way through when it came out and ever sense it auto plays after EVERYTHING I swear I must have seen it a dozen times at this point.
With games like SMT V and Kirby and the Forgotten land I think it's pretty obvious the switch is really starting to show its age. They're pushing up against what the spunky little thing can accomplish. I think if Nintendo were to announce the Switch 2 that does the same general thing but with more under the hood, it would be a smash success.
i have to disagree, while the switch is definetly not something like the Wii i believe the vast majority of the switch's audience doesn't really care about specs and the peak performance achievable is more than acceptable, like personally i can barely tell when a game runs on 30 fps rather than 60 (but that might just be me, same goes for 720/1080p). And if we think about it Nintendo still has a lot of things to milk out the switch, just think of all the 2017-2018 big nintendo games that released, most of them are prime sequel material (looking at you mario odyssey), + think of all the franchises that could use a new entry just like metroid did, a new dkc, a new f-zero, a new punch-out. in conclusion: i believe the switch still has plenty of things to offer and most wouldn't jump from the joy of having a more powerfull switch in the next couple of years

I am worried about the inevitable performance issues of Xenoblade Chronicles 3, since XBC2 already had loading issues when fast travelling to a huge city...

It’s weird to say, but I think this video and Barrel Blast looks to be the start of major character development of Scott(the character). I can’t even describe how, but Scott is significantly different at times and when I thought he was going to have one negative reaction, he actually has a positive reaction (ex Shin Megami Tensei, xenoblade, pokemon, losing your virginity)

@@MLittleBrony it doesn't come just from that. you're an rpg guy and the funeral touches on themes of "enjoying what you please", but barrel blast fully solidifies this mindset in scott. scott not only longer minds rpgs or funerals, but now sex even though he as a virgin doesn't enjoy it. and this was a big part of scott's personality is that he promoted virginity, as shown in the montage, but now he's fine with people doing it. he's willing to discuss more rpgs in the nintendo switch retrospective videos then he did before. i mean he talked about pokemon bdsp for a lot longer than i ever expected. there's definitely changes to scott's character and his outlook on games.

Great recap. The only thing that he missed that I think was interesting was the Miitopia Mii Maker, how it was super big for a few weeks, and then basically got abandoned. He talked about Miis later with Big Brain Academy and I feel like this really could've led to a Mii renaissance.

i would like to say there is nothing holding monkey ball back due to the engine used, it all depends on how the physics are coded. you can use unity's default physics (which suck) or you can make your own system. if the physics feel off, its not a unity issue, its completely on the devs.
the old games sorta "snap" the stages to full tilt while the remaster has a noticable slow down. Liam Triforce (iirc) has a great video on SMB and mentions this.

The best unity games are the ones you don't realize they're in unity until the logo shows up in the credits. Sadly most companies push unity on their devs because they can just use the base parts like the default physics instead actually either replacing them with a better fitting system or at least fine tuning it for the game.

Which is laughable because modern programming pretty much relies on frameworks and libraries to speed up development.

This was a joy to watch. I really like this series. Just wrapping up a whole year in sections is a great way to look back. This year felt pretty monotone for me. I wasn't over hyped for anything and as a pokemon fan PLA was cool but BDSP felt janky. Kirby was incredible. Kingdom hearts being cloud versions was the biggest let down for me though.

Game Builder Garage was honestly a great idea on their part. It’s such a fun experience for younger kids who are genuinely interested in programming. My little brother loves it, and I have a friend with young siblings who had a blast for months and months on end with it.

I have to agree that I'm tired of how Nintendo has decided to do "post-release support". Nintendo took this concept of supporting a game after release with new updates to keep it fresh and the community alive, and instead used it to release unfinished games that they then slowly rolled out the rest of the content for. They either completely misunderstood the point, or they're deliberately just being stingy while pretending like they're being generous. I'd rather they just not bother with content updates and give us complete games on release.

With Skyward Sword, the "Hold L to turn the camera" was really annoying, but I loved the button controls otherwise. The motion controls with my brand new joy cons were absolute dog shit, and I never had a problem with its Wii motion controls. Handheld or pro controller for the switch version is definitely the best way to play this game, for me.

Man five years have really passed by like it was yesterday. Switch really did done a lot of things over the years. Some are good and some are not so good. Here’s to another five years for this hybrid.
I love how Scott turned a simple topic into a high effort comedy show with jokes that make me laugh so hard that i frequently fell of my chair.
It’s interesting to see Scott (and others) say that PAC-MAN 99 was super easy to get 1st place in but Tetris 99 was hard, it was the absolute opposite for me. It took me about a month of sessions to finally get my first (and only) win in PAC99, but I can consistently win in Tetris 99. It really goes to show that even when it comes to old arcade games, people can have vastly different skills.

Oh breakout, how you will be missed. Not to say the new end theme is bad particularly, I can see it coming more into its own in the future. But that classic outro with that specific part of the song was iconic, and was made the end jokes even better knowing that that iconic tune would come on like a drum rim shot perfectly punctuating the joke!

I love how you build upon the year slowly by bringing up relevant news leaks and rumors floating around in between months, it’s a perfect time capsule for what Nintendo was doing that year.
I am convinced that Scott records his jokes years in advance and randomly inserts them into his videos.
I think he is just that good at making jokes, but he probably works on the jokes first since the serious talking segments for the most part are easy to know where he’s going with it.

With WarioWare, the fact that they made every game completable by every character via different methods was impressive, but it ended up making some micro games either way too annoying or way too easy, based on the game and character. I wish every single character had their *own* micro game collection, and then the “remix” stages could toss random stages at you, making you have to adapt to the sudden character change.
1:44:29 Fun fact about the remakes is that much of the code is directly copied from the original Diamond/Pearl. There were even mods day 1 that required basically 0 changes to work... So yeah, it was definitely rushed and cobbled together, since it was more like a port with a new coat of paint than a remake.

This guy has so much charisma its amazing. I don't actively play the switch and still watched the whole 2 hours. Great video & keep it up! I'm sure you'll end up somewhere great in the entertainment industry
I actually popped off when you got to Neo: the world ends with you. I actually only played the original right after neo was announced, though my brother has been a long time fan and I had thought about playing it before. Most TWEWY fans actually seem to love neo, and I think it's arguably better than the original, though they have different strengths. The original's combat is more unique and ties better to the game's themes, and has a better story, whereas neo is just straight up more fun. I'm glad to hear you're in a similar position to me of "enjoying it despite it being an RPG"
I definitely like NEO a lot and wish it got more marketing than Balan Wonderworld

Neo was awesome and I really love it. Square dropped the ball because of their usual "westerners won't like it so let's concentrate our marketing to Japan... who didn't even buy the first game as much as the west" mentality.

Yeah, Wario Ware is a tough one. On the one hand, I couldn't imagine how to go from the games before that relied on gimmicks and hardware specifications, like motion controls, touch screens, microphones, etc... and I was blown away by what they came up with in Get it Together! I tip my hat to Nintendo for that. On the other, the staying power is a bit weaker with this one. However, even if I go back to it fairly less often than with the other games in the series, I still have a blast with it each time.
Honestly if it had some sort of online multiplayer it would be perfect but as it stands it's a pretty good ww title
Even with not as much content as Gold (which is more of a compilation of microgames with a few new ones sprinkled in and full on voice acting in a new story), GiT is still one heck of a good WW game and by far my favourite Switch game of 2021!
Same. I guess after Gold and all that was accomplished, Get it Together kinda had less, but at thebsame time, it was an alright and interesting experience. All the play styles plus all the mini games; it was a very complex game of roulette.

GiT gimmick is excellent and really is fun and unique like any WW, but what kills it for me is how much focus there is on multiplayer. WW has generally been a single player experience. But with GiT you're missing out on half the content if you don't have people to play with. and WW just isn't as easy to have for a party environment, microgames are so face paced and need trial and error I don't think it's inviting for newcomers wanting to play some quick rounds

Scott's reaction to the Danganronpa games is probably the most spot-on reaction to playing them all in a row I've ever seen.
The collection is missing the spin-off Ultra Despair Girls though, so it's not technically complete. It's a little bit of a sad fact for me and the other 47 who apparently are the only ones who like that game.
Eh, tbh... although UDG is important from a story perspective, the gameplay is odd, dare I say bad, and some of the content inside is... questionable at best.
@@exyzt9877 I liked it enough to finish it (like the other games it's kinda crazy and occasionally flies off the rails) but I haven't really felt a pull to replay it .It can get a little [insert The Simpsons "eeeoooouh" and shirt-collar-pulling clip here] but it's worth a play if you wanna know how Monokuma got made. Otherwise you can skip it. I assume that's why they left it out.

With games like SMT V and Kirby and the Forgotten land I think it's pretty obvious the switch is really starting to show its age. They're pushing up against what the spunky little thing can accomplish. I think if Nintendo were to announce the Switch 2 that does the same general thing but with more under the hood, it would be a smash success.
It'll be called the Super Switch, watch.
i have to disagree, while the switch is definetly not something like the Wii i believe the vast majority of the switch's audience doesn't really care about specs and the peak performance achievable is more than acceptable, like personally i can barely tell when a game runs on 30 fps rather than 60 (but that might just be me, same goes for 720/1080p).
And if we think about it Nintendo still has a lot of things to milk out the switch, just think of all the 2017-2018 big nintendo games that released, most of them are prime sequel material (looking at you mario odyssey), + think of all the franchises that could use a new entry just like metroid did, a new dkc, a new f-zero, a new punch-out.
in conclusion: i believe the switch still has plenty of things to offer and most wouldn't jump from the joy of having a more powerfull switch in the next couple of years
@@andreadimartino3369 i dont its about ooh graphics more so a more powerful switch opens the door for new games. the new switch would be the switch but better bc it'd be able to handle modern games leading to more third party offerings and improved first party offerings much like the NES to SNES.
