    You can glue leather to the handle of that DMT diafold and it's the best pocket sharpener.
    I glue leather to it whilst closed and cut along the middle seam, it works as a nice strop.

      Brilliant modification. I've used bits of scrap leather and cordage made from old t-shirts to make wraps/handles for my Smith's dual sided diamond sharpening stone and for the ceramic rods from a spyderco sharpmaker. Since I wear an XXL glove, just holding the bare ceramic rod for an extended period of time causes weird cramping sensations so the extra bulk from the leather wrap does an excellent job in helping to fill out the grip.

      @@deathbyastonishment7930 ah, yes there is a break-in period where the stones are very aggressive but after a few months it settles down, don't mistake this for the diamonds falling out they don't on DMT they are bonded not glued to the aluminium. After 20years mine still sharpen any knife, in fact its great because it gives a fine polish more like a 2,000 grit (green is 1,000 grit). you contest if there are still diamonds in your stone by rubbing it on a glass bottle.

    I'm a big fan of the DMT Aligner system personally. Not as fancy as a KME and you have to finagle a bit with the plastic clamp, but it does give you a portable guided sharpening system that you can use on the couch lol. Probably not capable of mirror polishing as the stones don't get fine enough.

    • @andrew-ripley1747
      @andrew-ripley1747 4 года назад

      I use a rubber jar gripper to help hold onto the handle of the stone holder in the aligner system. Not ergonomically perfect but it gives really good edges by my standards.

    Nice one! I have a set of these and they're quite effective. I'm used to using the Sharpmaker stones freehand in a similar manner to how you used this, and I've uglied up a few edges with the DMTs because they cut so much faster. Lesson learned though.

    • @BigBear--
      @BigBear-- Год назад +1

      You should get the guide system for these. It's similar to the lansky, but more portable and compact, as it just uses very strong magnets to snap the guide rod onto the dia-folder, and a degree guide that you screw onto the knife blade, then away you go. It allows you to sharpen freehand but guided to the degree you set the guide, I get ridiculously sharp and mirror polished edges with this simple system.

    I find a convex edge is easy to establish, but maintaining a super keen edge on one gives me trouble, as opposed to Scandis, or things with a v-edge off my KME. Those little flat portions make it easier to find or guess the existing angle, whereas when I have to touch up a convex edge, way too often I'll overshoot the angle and make things too obtuse. Then it's more work to undo the damage. :-/

    Bacon sandwich & orange juice. Seriously, you lose electrolytes & hydration & that’s what a hangover is. Electrolytic sports drinks are hard on the stomach, as is bacon on it’s own so a bacon sandwich is easier on the stomach & will boost your electrolytes. Orange juice will hydrate you & replace lost vitamins. Add a dose of paracetamol & coffee afterward if needed but you need to settle your stomach & rehydrate before coffee but after you should be fine.

      Uneven? Diamond plates have a breakin period of a few sharpenings, they are super coarse at first, thats all.
      But i can get a stupidly sharp edge with 325grit in 20sec with a dmt credit card... It totally made me rethink sharpening equiment needed.
      Diafolds due to the handle would be way more practical to use, and having two of them (four grits) would be all you ever need and it fits in a pocket.
      Fastest and agressive edge:
      325grit low angle back and forth scrubbing.
      Then normal angle, light edge leading alternating passes, 5 per side.
      Finest edge:
      Same coarse low angle back and forth.
      Then normal angle, finer grit light edge trailing alternating passes, 10 per side. Then a similar sized strip of balsa strop with compound, 15 alternating passes per side = hair popping.
      I cant imagine something more compact and versitale.
