Certina Swiss (since 1888) has a 38mm DS Action Diver using the Powermatic 80 with 80 hours of power reserve in a Sea Conservancy Special Edition or in Titanim, both at a lower price. I think those get my vote.
This looks like a great watch, thanks for the funny and detailed review. The crystal is cool, but $1,600 is a little pricey for an unknown brand. Mido is pretty nice also, and tends to be less money when you find a deal….keep up the humor, appreciate your reviews. The watch is very cool, and unique in some ways. Cheers
I have the blue dial blue bezel Escudo Seacrest and it is insane! The drilled lug holes make a HUGE difference when changing straps. The specs go above and beyond and it’s awesome having a lumed bezel insert.
Great review, thanks! It took a little bit of searching to find a clear pic of the writing on the bottom of the dial. If it was mentioned in the video, sorry but I missed it... On all the "official" shots of the watch they seem to go to great pains to obfuscate the text on the bottom of the dial. (Much like when you see a listing for a Seiko diver on ebay and the bezel is turned from the 12 o'clock position in every single pic, it's a safe bet that it's misaligned). The dial reads reads "Lisbon London". I thought it might actually say "Swiss Made", judging from the price... But I'm sure they would've had "Swiss Made" plastered all over if that was the case. It's a safe bet to assume (besides the movement) this was 100% manufactured in Asia. Now, it is a nicely executed piece and kudos to them for using a no date movement, as opposed to having a ghost position (ugh). For me personally, if I really wanted one... I'd wait to buy it secondhand on the grey market for hundreds less. If I was looking for something "Black Bayish" from a microbrand, I would probably go for a Lorier diver for around $499.00. Sure, it has a Myota 9039 instead of a Sellita but for less than half the money with comparable finishing I could live with it.
I own the Escudo Ocean Seacrest Preto Dial (black dial), and it is an incredible watch. Gorgeous design, excellent specs, outstanding fit & finish, and superb quality. In addition, the folks at Escudo Watches are incredible to deal with, answered all my questions, and offered a world-class shopping experience. In my opinion, this watch easily competes with the Tutor Black Bay and other luxury watches costing much more, making the Escudo Ocean Seacrest an amazing value for money.
sorry Escudo, BB58 all day. I'd rather get a pre-owned BB for ~2,700ish. The MT5402 movement is in a whole different league, and as a whole the Tudor is wayyy nicer and looks much better
Aluminium and colour are the British way of writing it (and indices isn't wrong either, by the way). But the watch is not British for sure. I suppose it is Portuguese. Escudo is shield in Portuguese, and the Portuguese currency before the Euro was the Escudo. That fleur-de-lis and the cross are typical Portuguese symbols. The cross is still used nowadays by the air force in their planes, and it used to be used in the ships during the discoveries period - Vasco da Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, Infante D. Henrique, etc. It's a pity you didn't research a bit more about the watch to be aware of the symbology used in it.
According to their website, the watch is actually both British and Portuguese. Although the watch uses a Swiss movement and has Swiss watchmakers work on it, it's actually mostly British. They have a British watch manufacturer working on it and it's assembled in the UK. Escudo is also a British Watch & Clock Makers Trade Member too.
1953 invicta pro diver for 109 dollars. i dont know if they discontinued them but its my fav invicta. i put a crown and buckle chevron strap similar to the black bay and i love it.
"Escudo watches are conceived, designed and developed in the UK and Portugal, using Swiss movements, and collaborating with quality watch manufacturers from both UK and Switzerland. Final assembly is in the UK."
Instead of 1/2 the price, if I wanted a BB homage, I'd probably go for the San Martin ones which has an excellent build. But most people that go for a Tudor likely want the rep that's associated with it. If it's not a Tudor, then just go for best bang for buck like a Zelos, Monta, Baltic, even San Martin.
@@MlkXiu didn’t know that. However, they are all out of stock. At least at San Martin Europe. I still prefer the Invicta homage as it represents a historic model and not a current model by other brands.
Since Escudo says "Lisbon - London" at the six o'clock, it stands to reason they would use the actual English spelling of "Aluminium" and "Colour", not the shortened, bastardized American versions.
Colour is correct, it is the actual British spelling and the same goes for Aluminium, that is the British spelling as well. So, both spelling are correct ;-)
Cant really compare that mvt to the BB58 mvt though (accuracy, power reserve and how its thinness allows the BB58 to be quite thinner than that watch). For this only you can make a solid case for Tudor. But that's just me.
Tudor dosen't really do anything for me but I do like a few vintage Tudors. After buying my 14060m I don't think I'll ever need another diver of that style but a Seiko tuna Marine master I DEFINITELY NEED!😅
Is it me or do some Tudor fan boys seem to forget that the original 2012 Blackbay came in at 41mm , 14.7 thickness and was using an eta movement, and it was still $3000. Today it’s a classic. These Escudo Watches have been getting praise not only on this channel but on JustBlueFish, GMT-3 , whatsonthewrist and in magazines so they all can’t be wrong. All say it’s worthy of its price tag. To be honest this doesn't recall me particularly of a BB and the price tag is too high in my humble opinion, especially if you consider that for around 1k you can buy for instance a Squale 1521, an original design piece with a lot of history and with the same Sellita movement. For sure the specs of this piece are pretty good and it doesn't look bad at all, but again it's not for me.

The more I get into watches the more I think most people shouldn't but anything but budget watches. The value at the bottom of the market just gets better and better. While the hype and the gaudy crassness at the top end just gets greater and greater...of course if money was no object, I'd get a JLC and a grand Seiko...but as I'm not in that position, I'd rather invest the money
Nice watch, but if we're considering microbrands instead of major brands, in this genre why would I go for this over a Lorier Neptune which has similar specs but for a third the price ($499)
Doesn’t the Lorier Neptune have a Japanese movement and a really poor bracelet and clasp ? Check out the other reviews on the Escudo , all of which have been great reviews.
There are a few excellent BB58 homages for around $250-400. I rate them because they are entirely non-pretentious. They say exactly where they are from (the far east) not “London” because maybe a few bits had their final screw put in there. TBH Escudo’s backstory is as piss-takeable as Bremont’s.
Looking at their pricing and given the fact that they are a rather unknown microbrand you would be mad to buy one of their watches at 1500 Euro. That's just crazy. Nothing wrong with that if you are madly in love with the company and the watch design and just intend to keep the watch forever. But let's face it, we're collectors. Nothing wrong with being a Black Bay 58 homage since the BB58 is a homage to the legendary Rolex 6538 (the real Bond watch, sorry Omega). The main problems with this watch: 1) Less refined than the BB58. The gilt is in all the wrong places, I mean, the edge of the bezel? Seriously? 2) Woeful power reserve 3) Any bracelet options? 4) Who needs drilled lugs? Those things are butt ugly. Just buy a cheap springbar tool if you're strappy go lucky.
It’s not a homage, have you read or seen the other reviews on this watch? Since when did the 58 have lume on the bezel, Holographic logo on the crystal , and as for the power reserve it’s the exact same movement as in the Oris Aquis and 65 diver 🤷🏻♂️ the edge of the bezel is bronze hence the name black and bronze. I like the bezel. I have no need for timer shit. Nice watches but not at $1600. That’s a lot rich.

That watch doesn’t actually look bad but at that price point without a bracelet , I’ll pay the extra for a BB 58.
Cool watch. Colour is spelt right
