I remember learning about the music from my Caribbean parents. Learning different dances our parents grand parents and so on had practiced. The Island my parents came from were made up of three cultures; Caribbean Indian, Spanish and African cultures. We learned dances from all three cultures, but there was one specific dance that this story reminds me of. It was the African dance where there were three percussionist playing Conga's all tuned differently. Only the drums played and the performer danced. The bizarre aspect of it, is that at first you start moving to the beat of the drums but as you continue, the drums start playing to the movement of the performer.
There is a spiritual aspect that happens, a spirit comes over your body as if someone draped a blanket over you, then the Spirit takes over your movements and I noticed when this change happened because I went into a trance (as all who do this dance do) the drummers KNOW when this moment happens, they can see either the spirit or the trance take place and then they begin to play following the movement of the spirt in the dance. A shake, a jump, even a freakin twerk, side step hard one drummer taps, sidestep to the other side and that drummer plays harder and louder.
The trance and movement can last minutes but it felt much longer, I was conscious while in trance and felt if I had went on I would have "gone deeper" and became afraid and exited the circle we took turns dancing to the drummers. I think the drummers know something about when the person exits the circle, I sensed they have seen the deepest of trances and that the drummers go into a trance effect following the dancer and know those who are "rookies" or those who become fearful.
I only tried it once and knew I could love it but knew internally there would be a price to pay, what I don't know, my primitive brain sensed the danger of this path if I were to become a loyal practitioner. I walk a different path today but can still feel the thrill of it and the temptation to dive again, it's not a fear what I would find but a fear of what I could be willing to love so much as an addiction and what I could lose from it. I can't explain it any further than that.
I think this story is true and wonder if the tunes heard or vibrations they felt were related to anything natural that vibrates to certain frequencies. Remember the flies in the Sherlock Holmes movie with the Ironman dude? Vibrations and Trances is my hypothesis to what happened to these people.
