    Hands down the best video on bass left hand technique I have seen so far, especially because you clearly say that there is not one right way, it always depends. Adam Neely says always keep a straight wrist, Scott Devine says leave a gap between palm and neck, Ariane Cap says drop the wrist. They all have a point, but as a beginner it can be very irritating that everybody is adament that one style is correct, and they contradict each other. I drop the wrist when I need a wide reach, but if I just play root for two bars, I even go to lobster claw to relax.
    I would love to hear your opinion on pinky technique, though. It is so short that it only reaches the E string when completely stretched, with a lot of strain to tendons and joints. For example the G minor pentatonics starting on the E string has the pinky on 6th fret E string. I keep hurting myself when I try to play that (stinging pain in the finger an hour or two later when I grab something) and I have not found any technique yet to avoid that.

    Thanks so much for putting together this series. I recently volunteered myself to play bass for my church so I needed some crash course skillzzz. I’m a classically trained pianist so was able to put that training to work, but I had very little idea of technique, so these videos have been super helpful!

    What was quite a revelation is Rabbath''s thumb pivot idea. Works just as well for bass guitar as for double bass...

      Was about to comment the same. Like what am I doing wrong? I don‘t think they are too short, but I can‘t tell why I can’t spread them like he does in the video 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @melissafischer3850
    @melissafischer3850 2 года назад

    Him in the beginning of the video: don‘t put too much pressure on the note.
    In the end: Avoid buzzing
    Me: tries to not strain my hands by losing some pressure -> result: buzzing 👍🏻
    But I think it‘s simply because my hands are absolutly not used to touching a string
