As a solo female traveler I rented a small apartment in Vedado and would walk daily to the old town or even to Fabrica de Arte at odd hours of the night (accompanied off course), without ever feeling unsafe. Cuban people are very hospitable, very sympathetic and sociable. But what shocked me most is how educated they are, I'm not necessarily talking 'book smart' although yes it's very true for a lot of them, but they have an incredible level of knowledge and wisdom regarding the human condition, philosophy and spirituality as well. This is a country where you’ll learn the true value of 'don't judge a book by its cover' and where you might learn your biggest life lesson from chatting with an elderly sitting on a bench at Parque Central. My best memories from travelling will forever be from visiting Cuba. It thought me how to stop running and looking for things to fulfill me outside of myself. There, I found myself doing things like setting up and alarm to watch the sunrise on the Malecon. I found myself coming to terms with coexisting with the neighbours' rooster cackling at all time of the morning, coexisting with all the other elements of nature which are bigger than we could ever comprehend. I don't want to seem idealistic or make it sound like everything is perfect in Cuba, on the opposite. According to my Canadian eyes, I saw lots of things needing 'fixing'. But above that, what I choose to remember from this magical island is the people, so proud of their culture they will do anything to protect it from becoming just that, history. There are 666 comments before me. What an honour it is from me to share part of my history forever meshed with that of Cuba.

@@lioneldemun6033 I’ve travelled across DR (Bavaro, La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris and the capital) four times now. I heard about petty crimes happening there, but thankfully I’ve never had any issue or felt unsafe either, though I have to say I was staying with friends. But yes, do avoid walking very late at night in certain areas there!

Cuba me duele mucho.Por eso no viajo a Cuba,no quiero contribuir al dolor de mis Paisanos. 'NOBODY IS FREE,UNTILL EVERYBODY IS FREE'
#NOTRAVELTOCUBA, #SOSCUBA, #CUBAESTADOFALLIDO

Unfortunately, Latin America is passionate about socialism, hence the misery and poverty in the region. I live in Brazil, a country where after being arrested for embezzling billions of dollars in corruption scandals and using Brazilian resources to help the Venezuelan and Cuban dictatorships, Luiz Inácio LULA da Silva won the last elections to be president of the country. This victory of socialism in Latin America comes largely thanks to the large international media, partly socialist, which accused our previous president of promoting deforestation in the Amazon, and now with Lula in power, deforestation has increased even more and Brazil has returned with its policy of helping neighboring socialist dictatorships. I ask you foreigners to research the risks that Brazil and Argentina are currently experiencing of becoming socialist dictatorships. Currently, President Lula is trying to pass a gag law in Congress to prevent the population from expressing themselves on social networks. the project has no chance of passing the congress, which is mostly right-wing here in Brazil, but the STF, which is the Brazilian supreme court, which mostly has members appointed by the current president Lula, said that it would prevent social networks in Brazil if the project did not pass, in a clear demonstration of his dictatorial interests. Pray for Latin America.

Food was OK but not a lot of variety and some things are scarce. We made friends there easily through our contacts. Unlike Mexico and other countries, where a lot of English is spoken, having Spanish skills would help a lot. Interesting history, buildings, and monuments of course.

    • @pcatful
      @pcatful Год назад +1

@@pategan6747 That's an interesting point, though I don't know if it reflects reality. Cuba imports most of its food, and tourism is a great deal of the economy. The contribution has fluctuated with Covid and the recovery. Meal for meal, you have to admit that the population of tourists at any time is minuscule compared to the resident population. I read that some food imports are controlled by the military and ends up in government stores and tourist businesses. I know it is sad situation. The people should not be so poor.

To correct the statement @ 9:55. US citizens can travel to Cuba directly from the US in fact American Airlines has several direct flights a day from Miami and other US carriers fly from FLL and TPA. Delta Air Lines will re-start service next month (April 2023). US citizens cannot explicitly travel for tourism but can go “in support of the Cuban people”. Tourist card required (can be purchased at the gate/day of travel prior to boarding)

@@WannaWalk Western countries are all vassal states of the USA. At the end of the day, these countries don’t have full freedom and if USA would want certain countries to not fully invest in Cuba those countries would listen. I don’t know what glasses you put on to not see this and to ridiculously ask for proof or sources or whatever just open your eyes and take a look at how 99% of the time western countries align themselves with USAs interests.
Want more concrete examples? I’ll give you one. A few months ago The UN assembly adopted a resolution submitted by Russia: "Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and
      related intolerance".
Obviously you’d expect European countries to vote in favor right? Well guess what USA aren’t fond of Russia for resisting their military expansion so they voted AGAINST. Guess who else voted against? Big majority of Western Europe.
I’m not even gonna begin about how the sanctions against Russia actually impact way more Western Europe and every politician knows this but yet still does as daddy usa wishes.
Cuba is poor for 2 reasons:
      1-(main one) USA
2-almost the only communist country in capitalist world.

Any ship which has traded with cuba cannot enter an American port for 6 months which makes it very difficult logistically for ships that might trade with Cuba to even make a fuel stop on their way back around. I love these videos of yours! They remind me of the time back in 1998 when I visited the island with my mother for the first time since I left it at the age of 3 and a half years. The only thing is, that the condition you've recently filmed is so much worse! and it hurts, because no matter what anyone may tell you, "home" remains home. Even if one's present home is so much different and somewhere else. I remember, more than visually recorded, where the scents familiar to the island: the scent of rain falling on the streets, rising upwards; tired but resilient ghosts, just like the people. The scent of earth, which had the colour of old blood. The scent of the foods which vendors still sold on the street, if there was enough to sell. It may have been my imagination, but overall, the whole of the island had a smell which i cannot describe. A smell familiar, not pungent but warm and penetrating, which I sensed no tourist could sense because that scent was reserved for the natives. And among many other familiar scents which I'll not take the time to describe, there was Always and Everywhere, the smell of the SEA!
Sometimes, the sight of so much suffering for lack of this, and that, I'd i'd feel so let down that I'd get totally drunk on "Negrita" rum, which to my taste, even today, is far better than Havana Club. I'd drink from morning to late at night. And at night, with no lights on the streets, my cousins and I would walk. I was surprised that I wasn't seeing too many animals on the street. And wondered if these were eaten for lack of food. Since there was so little, and that rationed. But I didn't have the courage to ask my cousins, afraid I, i'd offend them. One night, when I was more drunk than usual, I came into a room in the house where 8 or 10 people were intently watching something on the television. Now, my mother had warned me to think before I spoke. "remember this is not the United States! You can get yourself in trouble and as well the family. But on that particular night, I was ESPECIALLY drunk!...and didn't give a damn about the consequences suffered if I got out of line. And so I said, "don't tell me that crazy, mouthy Fidel is still taking since I left this morning! How can you people take it? To me, it seems you're sharing lunacy with him, no matter who the hell he thinks he is!" Well, it didn't take long before this woman in a uniform showed up at the house wanting to speak to me. And in a rather stern, intimidating voice, she warned me, that I was (far) out of line! And if I continued being so open, so disrespectful, I would perhaps find it very hard to leave the country. What I had no idea of, is that every few blocks, there was a person who kept a merciless eye on the people if they got "cute" as Americans say.
All I recall happening past this friendly visit from "la companera oficial" was getting dragged into the shower, from which only cold water would flow at such a late time in the night. And, I continued trying to get out of the shock of the cold...but my cousins, all three of them; Osbeida, Piru and Ivalino, held me down against my efforts. After that, I of course, I continued getting drunk, but I had sworn to myself to never again, let something offensive therefore dangerous come out of my mouth!
Well, to put an end to my reminiscence, thanks to you, Wanna Walk, it's been such a pleasure to view to have taken this walk about with you!
You know, it is such a tragedy to a people, who happen to be so good of heart and soul. But, being, Cuban, I know their resilience will take them to the end, still smiling, joking about their circumstances, and remaining kind, welcoming, friendly and generous to all who visit the island. They are light in their darkness. But, That's just the Cuban SPIRIT, no matter what!!! Sorry to have written so much. But my recollection was strong and insistent. So, please excuse me.
😁🥰 and for you, Wanna Walk, a thankful👏🙏❤

If Cuba is able to trade with other countries, except the U.S, where is all the money going in Cuba from these trades? If tourism is so popular in Cuba, where is all this money from tourism going in Cuba? I wonder sometimes, if the standard of living will ever improve in Cuba? The Cuban people have survived such hardships for so long, that it has become the norm for them. I wonder how many Cubans attempt to flee Cuba each year to the U.S? My wife and I went to Varadero Cuba in 2009 for a vacation and many people have asked me what it was like ...in terms of do I recommend it?
It really does depend on what a person is looking for. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to lie in the sun, where you feel safe and where the food is okay to eat, then Cuba may work for you.
Be prepared however for a few stark realities. There is an extremely limited selection of consumer goods to be found anywhere on the island. Forget about eating steak while you are there...the main foods are locally caught fish, eggs, poultry and pork products.
If you use a washroom outside of the resort, keep in mind that toilet paper is a highly priced commodity in Cuba and you will have to pay for a few pieces of it.
The beer is really good. Crystal and Buccanero are the main brands. After consuming copious quantities of both I cannot however tell you which is better.
Don't count on finding things like batteries for cameras etc. on the island so it is best to bring spares of those types of things. If you are planning to send a postcard home, you will only be able to find BW pictures of either Fidel Castro or Che Guevera.
Things you should also pack are a couple of sleeves of Pringles (local junkfood snacks are horrible) and a couple of family packs of gum to include a single pack with your daily tips to your room cleaners.

The street food is truly awful in Cuba, compared to Mexico. It would probably be much better and more varied (not just lousy pizza) if ingredients were more readily available, but basic necessities are in short supply. My experience last year was that of a backpacker in Havana, not the superficial all-inclusive resort experience in Varadero. Although I'm happy to have seen Cuba, I did find Havana to be rather oppressive with the crumbling buildings and neglected infrastructure, filthy streets with piles and rubble and garbage on every corner and non-stop, extremely persistent touts trying to scam me in the touristy areas (especially on Obispo). I hope that the Cuban Government can get their act together to clean up that place because it has tremendous potential for tourism.

gcmgome, However, friend, the Cuban people NEED Foreigners NOT to Travel to Cuba!!!!!!
Because? Because while you pay the shameless communist government, he continues to maintain himself; but, and that money is NEVER reverted to the town.
Please DO NOT travel to Cuba!!! And tell as many people as you can.

@@musicaquecalma4134 - That is a nonsensical outlook. The only good jobs in Cuba are in the tourist industry and the only way the outside world will know how life is in Cuba is by people going there.
Your answer to the country's problems are to deprive the Cuban people of the only decent jobs on the island and their contact with the outside world.
      How will that solve anything?

@@gcmgome Do you know why I have issued that opinion? Let me explain: unfortunately, I WAS BORN and LIVED all my life under the boot of the scoundrel Fidel Castro Ruz.
Another thing, few people in Cuba live from tourism, they represent very little the majority of the people who live on the only and poor salary that the dictatorship pays them.
Our people NO longer want the communists, and every Cuban who lives in freedom is trying to fight to get this aberrant plague out of our country; one of the ways is to cut off their business and another is to REPORT THEM like this everywhere.
Why don't the people get them out anyway? Because he is imprisoned in a prison-island, they do not have ANY weapons to defend themselves or to attack; In addition, Fidel was so evil that he filled the country with State Security agents, civilian infiltrators in EVERY workplace, schools, universities, public places and blocks of houses where people live.
Although most of the people are already opening their eyes and a year ago they took to the streets en masse to ask for freedom.

Havana is my favorite city! I've been there 3X, with the first 2 times being day trips from Varadero in2015 and 2016. I noticed Havana becoming more vibrant where they started restoring many buildings. The last time in 2017, I stayed there for a week after Hurricane Maria that left much devastation. I started to see the garbage and demolition left on the streets as in this video. I thought it was because of the hurricane. It's very sad that Covid put a halt to Havana's economy. My dream is to visit again, hopefully very soon.

I visited Cuba in 2019 just before Trump put the kabash on cruise lines like Carnival which is what I was on. The country from the short time I was there was a sharp contrast from what I expected. The people were very friendly of course and the tourist stuff abounds. Also the places where we were taken to eat were more abundant in food for us than the people normally gets according to our guide. I truly enjoy watching these behind the scenes videos because we did not have enough time to see this.

I knew an old Cuban showgirl and dancer from the last days of Batista and into Castro’s regime, before coming to the US in 1961 or so. She said something similar about the “Embargo”, and how it wasn’t entirely to blame for Cuba’s economic woes.

I was just in Havana for the first time last month. I stayed for four days. I enjoyed my stay. What I did not enjoy, however, was lack of catalytic converters on the vehicles on the road. They are non-existent. It was something I didn't think of before I arrived. The exhaust fumes from the vehicles are choking and gave me a headache more than once. I do understand why they don't exist there given there circumstances but just be prepared to inhale those fumes though constantly if you visit
