I totally agree! I am american and i love how open the world is now with sharing patterns from all over. I would love if all English-language patterns were in the same "language".
I think it would be great if people were more like Europeans who grow up learning more than one language so don't have hang ups about having to use another slightly different one. That's a form of unity too.
I'm American and the difference is so small it's silly to have that little of a difference. I learned both! And I use all kinds of needles for crochet!
I loved today’s Q and A. Thank You for brightening up what started out as a gloomy day! And I agree with you: America and UK, lets agree on one set of crochet terms.
Loved every minute 👏👏😂 your both so talented and so fun to watch ❤️ someday if I ever get extra money, first thing on my list is to go on one of your cruises👍🏼 a wish for me and my husband 😂love hearing all the stories about your travels , childhood and doggy, look foreword to all your videos ❤️God bless always❤️🙏🏼✝️
I love the fact that we have our differences. Both in knitting/crochet terms. As you have said you both have different talents. A good reason to never stop learning and trying new things. Also embracing all our different cultures. So much fun. 👌
Lovely episode, you are so respectful of each other, it's nice to hear about your talents ! I know you film these in advance so I hope Arne is feeling better and that you both had a restful holiday . I took advantage of your sale and bought three new patterns so my knitting is planned for the year..lol ! Enjoy your week ...
Arne is even more adorable when he blushes!😄💛 We had a bischon that we took with us traveling if we drove. The first trip we put him in a kennel on the back seat, & discovered he can bark for 9 hrs straight if he's not given his seat of choice in the car. Unfortunately this was the front passenger seat so I spent many long drives squished against the door handle so Oscar was comfortable sharing the seat with me.😂
CH2517Joan Oh yes, we loved his company. (I prefered the door handle in my ribs rather than his loud barking😊.) His 2 front teeth stuck out which made him look like Milton Berle so my sister nicknamed him Uncle Miltie.
Scrooge McGruel Dog's do get car sick. If that happens they'll vomit. That wasn't our dog's reason for wanting the front seat, he just liked to be in the center of everything & liked looking out the window.
Hello, A&C! Lovely video, as always! On the design question, something I really enjoy doing is actually brainstorming and planning out designs on excel! You just have to format the cells so they're all squares and it's very simple to go back and change up your ideas without having to erase on paper or start everything over. I'd definitely recommend this for someone (like myself) who's interested on coming up with their own designs!
You are both extremely talented guys so don’t put yourself down Carlos. Arne was raised on a hill farm where the majority of work was done by the landowners. You were probably more of a city boy where skilled workers were at hand when needed. There was probably very little recreational activities in the mountains for Arne so he had years to finely tune his craftsmanship in carpentry, and fibre arts. I remember him saying he could knit in the dark when sent to bed as a young child. You seem to work well as a team supporting each other. To have achieved what you both have speaks volumes and you should be very proud of yourselves. Love from Wales XANGELA
I agree. One crochet language...teach us Norwegian so my fingers will automatically knit like a Norwegian (ha ha)...you all are so wonderful and I needed a lit of humor today.
You two are amazing to me! Just the fact that you can design patterns, yarns , fabrics and more is an inspiration to us all! I enjoyed learning more about you today. I always learn new things while listening and watching. Also, I have no idea why the US, where I am, and the UK, have different crochet terms, it's crazy lol. I always look forward to a new video. I always have so much fun! Give Freja a hug from me! x x Sharon from Eureka, California
Ooooh I love the Q & A’s Arne and Carlos!!! You both look well and happy - a great way to start a new year! It looks like you haven’t had any snow yet as the flowers inside and outside are blooming! It all looks very beautiful. Thank you for another enjoyable video guys!
That is why I 🧶 knit. We all have challenges and I try to keep it as simple as possible. Let go of Stress. Happy creating great patterns.Take care,❤️👵Sally🇺🇸
Loved this episode so much!!! You two are great! My late husband was like ARNE and he would say “if someone else can learn to do that, I can too” - he could also do anything easily and it was frustrating for the rest of us!
Hi A&C! Oh thank you for answering some of my questions. It is too bad that you are not invited to any exhibitions events in Sweden. Sure you will be anytime soon. well, this Swede loves you. How sweet you are when you talk about each other's talents! Looks so beautiful behind you while it gets darker and darker. I know you have a lot to do but a fan event maybe some place in Norway sometime would be nice. Have a great week🌹🌹and cute Freja too❤️
I agree, there should be one language for crocheting. Your both amazing and original. Love Freya and your love for her shows when you talk about her, another of your wonderful traits. The adventures of Pipi Longstockings, were some of my favorite books when I was young. Thank you both for putting joy in my day.
Happy New Year to you both, its lovely seeing you and the lovely view behind you. You are very good with Freja when you go travelling it's best not to stress her out. Arne is the jack of all trade and Carlos your the memory man .... What talent you both have. You do make me laugh when the two of you get started. It has been very enjoyable tonight Thank you so much. Now stay warm take care of each other till next week. Kram.
Christine Linn I live along the East Coast of the USA, an area that is vulnerable to hurricanes. For the last 4 years I have had to evacuate to my cousins' home in another state during hurricane season. I have a senior cat and he goes with me, because obviously there is no one or no place to leave him with when a whole area evacuates. I have been very fortunate that my cat has been a real trooper when we have evacuated. He travels well during the long drive to our destination, and he adjusts well during our stay there. Last fall we were gone 2 weeks because there were 3 or 4 hurricanes that posed a threat to my home area, coming one right after the other.
Hello from Louisiana (USA). You two are so inspirational with not only your art but with how you create your life and curate your home. Thank you for giving us glimpses into your home and life.
The differences between the variations in reading patterns is more than language. There are so many unique techniques for knitting, as well as, differences in how garments are constructed. An example, would be the difference types of heels for socks, different ways to cast on, or off, and even differences in how the stitches are made. It would be interesting to see an encyclopedia of the evolution of knitting and crochet arts. I have learned so much for the two of you and I love your entrepreneur spirits. Your yarn designs are very beautiful. Thank you sharing yourselves, with our world.
Love your channel. I'm from the U.S. I've been crocheting about 4 years, and I agree with you there should be one standard for crochet.. Stay well. Takk skal du ha.
I’m using this Covid time to go back into your archives. This was another winner! I loved your answer about acrylic yarn. Some knitters I know are real yarn snobs and not every one can afford an expensive indie-dyed skein! Plus as you said, different projects call for different fibres. I would never give a busy new mom a baby sweater in a yarn that had to be hand washed and fussed with!!!
Oh such a rich and vibrant Q & A podcast! Thank for all the personal info and sharing family stories with us. The best podcast ever! I admire that you put Freya’s needs above everything and found solutions that are the best for Freja. Wow - those really are super-powers you both have!
So nice to see you again. I love the Pippi Longstocking philosophy! I had an Aunt who once told me, " just go at it like you know what you're doing!" That piece of advice has served me well over the years.
What a great start to a very dreary, gray, rainy, blah January morning in Seattle. You always lift my mood. Next time I want to know what you are rubbish at. Start with Arne’s cooking popcorn. 😦
I love you guys i love love all your video, all your work, your sweters, your cushion, your quilt....everithing,your house.Succes and keep up your great work
You guys are wonderful . I'm a beginner crochet but I love the way you speak the way you knit it's how beautiful your your stories I love your stories. Funny thing happened I was watching your show and my daughters walked in and they'd never interrupt when I'm watching my RUclips shows so for Christmas I received knitting needles from my daughters so I'm going to try actually because of you guys but I'm only going to try but I'll still always watch you guys love you have a wonderful New Year.
I love that you guys don't condemn or trash any type of needles, so inclusive! Every type of needles is good for different thing, even with individual preferences. About the language, good idea! If musicians can learn Italian for music, and chefs learn French for culinary arts, knitters should totally learn Norwegian for knitting! 😀
Hello dear friends! How lovely to see you two having fun with eachother and at the same time be engaged to us all. I totally agree with only one English way for knitting/chrochet language. Now it is so confusing. Love the new Schachenmayr Regia Design Line "Gargia" by you! Thank you for those lovely colors and patterns. Many, many "Gargia" socks will be happily knit in The Netherlands. And YES: as I say to our granddaughters: You have never done it before, so I am sure you can! We are so grateful for Pippi ;-)
Really enjoy you guys! I agree that we should have one crochet language, it only makes sense. Thanks for all your videos especially crafting, gardening and cooking! MARY
Exactly. I agree. Not only should USA & Brits use same crochet terms, USA should be on the METRIC system!!! Regarding Freia, you are awesome parents. So many people only care about their own needs, not their animals. So good you realized why Freia was behaving poorly in Paris. Very loving and unselfish of you to keep her comfortable at the farm when you travel.
I could listen to you all day! I am so happy when Sunday comes around and I can enjoy your interactions with each other, again! This is one of your best episodes, guys... never change. I would never miss an episode!
Yap your right, Happy New Year 2020 to two beautiful artists , oh Arne , your so cute in this sweater, love what you do for us, I’ve learned from you, I’m Canadian, in Florida for 100 days
As alway, hugely entertaining, occasionally controversial and never never dull. Norwegian lessons are the way forward. Thank you for another episode of joyful xx
Wow - what I'd give for a photographic memory! But I'd also like to have carpentry skills. You are both unique and talented people and between the two of you, I'm sure you can do anything. The fact that you know so many languages is amazing to me. Canada tried to switch to the metric system many years ago. The result: those of a certain age still talk in inches, feet, yards, while the younger generation learned cm, metres, etc. Canada uses mm for needles sizes, while the Americans still use their own sizes. We are a mixed lot, but like Arne said, with Internet resources, anyone should be able to convert a pattern to what they are used to. Enjoyed this Q&A video very much.
Having to be bilingual in crochet English is a bit ridiculous, so I agree...everyone should learn Norwegian crochet. Great hidden talents! Thanks for all the smiles in this podcast. HUgs
I love that philosophy! I've been wanting to learn how to steek sleeves for an Aran sweater but it seems so scary. I think this will be the year I try. Thank you so much for the Q&A video! You are both so fun to listen to and inspire people to try new things.
I have never steeked any knitted piece, but I do have a story that should inspire you to give it a try. I belong to a knitting group that meets one night a week at a coffee shop. We bring our knitting projects, share ideas, and offer help to one another. A couple of years ago, one member of our group brought an Icelandic sweater she had knitted but later decided the length needed to be shortened. So right in the midst of our group and all its activity and conversations, she proceeded to steek the body of the sweater. She worked as if it were nothing more than binding off a scarf.
What a fun and friendly video! Seeing a more personal side of you two definitely improves your already terrific videos. And Carlos, I'm afraid I don't envy your memory skills. There are certainly things in life that one prefers to forget. Shhhhhhhh ;) I do however envy Arne's skills.
What a wonderful video! Thank you so much! You are both so talented and funny and we need more people like you in this world!! I love that you quoted Pippy Longstockings! My three sons (all grown up now) LOVED her when they were young! We even named our dog after her!
The main thing for me when using a pattern is to know whether it is English or US.I know the difference, it's just useful to know up front whether I have to adjust to the terms I am used to or not. Common sense ususally tells me which the pattern is but it is useful to not have to work it out every time. I am like Arne. My mother told me that even as young as 2 yrs old, if I wanted something and I didn't have it, I would look around me for something to make it with and I have always been a maker. I have had a go at most crafts, I worked with the builder to build my house, I am now a mixed media artist and a bookbinder. I have a terrible memory for detail but can always remember concepts. - and faces. Thank you for this informative episode. I am very interested in the layered intarsia and have bought one of the patterns.
You guys are probably the most talented walking this earth! Plus a big bonus is that you are kind, generous and have a big heart. Both of you are well-loved! This equals success to me! Have a wonderful and successful new year. Yeah, your videos also make me laugh!
I’m American and I don’t have a problem switching between US and UK crochet patterns. I love trying patterns from other countries and learning new stitches.
Lovely, fun episode. Thank you. A few comments: - acrylic yarn - good for when repeated washing is needed, such as children's clothes, blankets, etc. My cats love to sit on blankets so I'm usually washing the blankets every two months. - carpenters - yes, they never come when they say they will, but we appreciate them so anyway! - US vs. British 'English' - I have the same complaint with recipes, so I think the crux of the problem is the two different measuring systems: metric and imperial. The US almost went metric years ago, but I don't see the push for it again anytime soon. - Thank you for all your wonderful information and ideas.
Yes, American and Brits both speak English but like Norway and Sweden - the cultures and traditions are different. Similar to the difference between knitters who ‘throw’ (hold yarn in the right hand) and ‘pick’ (hold the yarn in the left hand). Crochet can be very confusing for us Canadians who have the British tradition but a huge American influence.
You guys gave another fabulous video! You guys are so funny you make me laugh! Thank you for sharing so positively and so frankly about yourselves. Now I know who can build my bookshelves Arne!!!! 😂You know when you said you A person can knit with any kind of needles, I just wanted to share that when I was a kid I use pencils one time to knit a scarf. I didn’t have any knitting needles or the money to get any so I used good old pencils. It worked 😊
The new year has begun. May it be all you hope for! About what needles we should/could use. I think that it's nice if you can borrow them and try them out, a lot, practice with different types yarn. I had the opportunity to do so with knitting needles. And I find it depends on the yarn as well as on the project. I'm with Carlos on the bamboo needles with slippery yarn and small projects. But Arne is definitely correct to use metal for a tight knit. The only way to find out is practice. And I found out that knitting is not really my thing, just the Christmas baubles/Easter eggs 😂. With the crochet needles I was not so lucky. But I've learnt to work with what I've got, although I can't work really fast with them. They were ridiculously cheap so I can't expect too much. For a consistent stitch I need to finish a project before starting on another. I'm still fumbling with the first few stitches when I pick up where I left off the previous day 🤭. But I'm getting better at it.
Hi guys. I'm glad Arne looks so much better. You may have taped this before he was sick with a cold, but it's still nice to see him back to his old self. I'd like to say that acrylic yarn isn't good for the environment. I have used some really nice acrylic yarn and I still have some in my stash. But once I realized that fabric and yarn, as well as clothing, is made from synthetic products, I then realized they were non-biodegradable. These synthetic products will be the same as plastic bottles and bags in our landfills. When I looked at it from this point of view, I decided natural fibers are my only product choice from now on.
Hello Guys!! Hope you're doing well and enjoying some down time. Tusen Tak for choosing my questions. I'm glad that Freja gets to stay with family and friends. That did sound like it was a little too stressful on her, poor doggy! and...I'm happy you got to experience Yellowstone Park and Old Faithful kept her timing for you. (and the Bison weren't grumpy) Happy New Year to you and yours!
I came across your work during this year when I was suffering from tendonitis in my right thumb from knitting. I just can't sit and not knit and it was excruciating having to rest my right hand - sooooo (long story short) I found your videos and learned the Norwegian way of knitting, thank you so much! I have watched nearly everything you have produced recently but only stumbled on this one today. It is really really funny, I was in stitches! It was great to hear your thoughts on nearly every question. I have been knitting blankies (knee rugs) for cancer patients where the main stipulation is to use only acrylic yarn so I really appreciated your thoughts on this.
Love You G-men b/c a bit of mentally relax needed at these bush-fire days to be a bit jump off the BIG ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER ... thank you for the Q&A show Your lake is soooo pretty compared to our lakes, paddocks, and poor dried gardens... Knitting, crochet are the best way to find brain balance for such huge break-down & stress for many Australians... Happy Festive season... All the best in the New 2020 Year...
@Aniela Szymanska Today an Aussie RUclipsr posted a picture by night made by a satellite in one of his videos. It looks like the whole of Australia is on fire. I deeply feel for you and for the wildlife. And I can only hope that you won't suffer too much long term effect.
i loved that question about hidden talents... wonderful.. .You are both wonderful.. ''i have never done that so i am sure i can do it '' Happy New Year to all of you ..
The world needs more of Arne and Carlos. Love your humor, talents, garden, location and Freja.
Thank you Jennifer!
Totally agree 🥳
Great answer to the acrylic question. I knit blankets to give away and I use acrylic so it can be washed and dried without problem🐏
😀
I totally agree! I am american and i love how open the world is now with sharing patterns from all over. I would love if all English-language patterns were in the same "language".
Happy New Year guys. Wishing you good health and happiness for the coming year.... And thank you for all of the fun and inspiration you give to us xx
Thank you for watching us!
They are. Honestly not hard to work this out.
I think it would be great if people were more like Europeans who grow up learning more than one language so don't have hang ups about having to use another slightly different one. That's a form of unity too.
Thank you Arne and Carlos. Thank you for everything you share with us. Great Pippi Longstocking quote!
Thank you for watching!
I am glad Arne is well again.

I'm American and the difference is so small it's silly to have that little of a difference. I learned both! And I use all kinds of needles for crochet!

This was so much fun listening to two amazing people. You both are blessed having great talents to compliment each other and to share with the world.

American here and I TOTALLY agree with you! Imagine how much easier we could share patterns! One united "language" for crochet terms!! #UnitedCrochet!
yes!
I love the fact that we have our differences. Both in knitting/crochet terms. As you have said you both have different talents. A good reason to never stop learning and trying new things. Also embracing all our different cultures. So much fun. 👌

Both options sound uncomfortable. But when the dog can handle the changes and come with you it's worth something.

I always wondered if Carlos had a photographic memory. Nice to hear he does. You are both so special in your own ways and that's what makes you work.
Thank you!
I could listen to you all day! I am so happy when Sunday comes around and I can enjoy your interactions with each other, again!
This is one of your best episodes, guys... never change. I would never miss an episode!
Thank you Phyllis!
Happy New Year to both of you. I always enjoy your podcast every Sunday Have a great week!
Thank you Beverly!
Yap your right, Happy New Year 2020 to two beautiful artists , oh Arne , your so cute in this sweater, love what you do for us, I’ve learned from you, I’m Canadian, in Florida for 100 days
Thank you Lucille!
As alway, hugely entertaining, occasionally controversial and never never dull. Norwegian lessons are the way forward. Thank you for another episode of joyful xx
Thank you for watching!
I agree, two crochet languages is crazy! Lets all learn norwegian..you two are so funny..i love how you bounce off each other! X
Thank you!
Happy New Year, Arne and Carlos ! Weren't you supposed to have some snow in the garden at this time of year ?😊
We film our videos some time ahead.
Thank you Mary!
Having to be bilingual in crochet English is a bit ridiculous, so I agree...everyone should learn Norwegian crochet. Great hidden talents! Thanks for all the smiles in this podcast. HUgs
😀
the longstocking philosophy is the best! I've never done it so I can
True!
Has your snow melted and your flowers come up already? I love these Q&As and listening to you both!
Hi Pamela, this was filmed a few months before Christmas.
You guys are funny! I'm not offended at all. Love your work and thanks for sharing your thoughts!
Thank you!
I love that philosophy! I've been wanting to learn how to steek sleeves for an Aran sweater but it seems so scary. I think this will be the year I try. Thank you so much for the Q&A video! You are both so fun to listen to and inspire people to try new things.
You are welcome Terry. Thank you for watching!
Yes, you are correct! British/Americans should unite for one common knitting/crochet language. You two are just so much fun!
Thank you Holly!
What a fun and friendly video! Seeing a more personal side of you two definitely improves your already terrific videos. And Carlos, I'm afraid I don't envy your memory skills. There are certainly things in life that one prefers to forget. Shhhhhhhh ;) I do however envy Arne's skills.
There are more of these type of videos on our channel site.
What a wonderful video! Thank you so much! You are both so talented and funny and we need more people like you in this world!! I love that you quoted Pippy Longstockings! My three sons (all grown up now) LOVED her when they were young! We even named our dog after her!
😀
I agree it would be easier , I’m English but the American crochet makes more sense . Love Donna xx
This was an inspiring episode. Everyone should jump in and try something new.
You are welcome!
Happy New year to you both and your dog, may it be full of peace and good health for you all.
Thank you Pamela!
You guys are probably the most talented walking this earth! Plus a big bonus is that you are kind, generous and have a big heart. Both of you are well-loved!
This equals success to me! Have a wonderful and successful new year. Yeah, your videos also make me laugh!
Thank you Lucinda!
I’m American and I don’t have a problem switching between US and UK crochet patterns. I love trying patterns from other countries and learning new stitches.
Thank you!
I’m addicted. Love your humour and your joy for life!
Thank you!
Really fun podcast. We should all go with american crochet language. You guys are wonderful.
Thank you Bonnie!
Love the video great to know more about you. Look forward to seeing the flowers and lake 2020 watching Freya enjoying the outdoors. Brambleknits.
Thank you!
Lovely, fun episode. Thank you. A few comments:
- acrylic yarn - good for when repeated washing is needed, such as children's clothes, blankets, etc.
Sorry to miss you when you were in the US in Boston. Hopefully, next time.
Yes, hopefully next time!
😀😀😀
George Bernard Shaw: “England and America are two countries separated by the same language.”
Margaret McCamant that is s funny and true!!
True!
In the background, I see all the beautiful flowers in your garden. Last video you were snowbound. ????
We film them ahead of schedule.
It worked 😊
Thank you for sharing this story Dorinda!
That is very true, we just need to test different needles.
👍
A cup of tea,and Arne and Calos you two are the best xx
Thank you!
Great episode. You make my Sunday.
Thank you Joye!
(and the Bison weren't grumpy)
Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thank you Jody!
I just adore you both! Thank you for all you do.
Thank you for watching!
Agree one crochet language would be nice. Love your videos. It is a pleasure watching them.
Thank you Linda!
We are glad you found us Carolyn!
Me too!
I enjoyed my visit with you too. Thank you both.
Thank you too!
Agreed, I live in the UK but always use US terms, they make more sense. Happy New Year x
😀
Love You G-men b/c a bit of mentally relax needed at these bush-fire days to be a bit jump off the BIG ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER ... thank you for the Q&A show Your lake is soooo pretty compared to our lakes, paddocks, and poor dried gardens... Knitting, crochet are the best way to find brain balance for such huge break-down & stress for many Australians... Happy Festive season... All the best in the New 2020 Year...
Thank you Aniela, to you too!
@Aniela Szymanska
Today an Aussie RUclipsr posted a picture by night made by a satellite in one of his videos. It looks like the whole of Australia is on fire. I deeply feel for you and for the wildlife. And I can only hope that you won't suffer too much long term effect.
Those sweaters look gorgeous on you. Great designs.
Thank you Beverly!
I enjoyed your video so much! You make me so happy! Thank you for sharing your moments!
You are welcome Aurora!
I would love to see some of Arnes rugs!!

You have pointed out perfectly that we all have different talents that someone else envies because their own strengths are in different areas.
True!
I thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A very much. I too would love to see more of you home inside and out.
Thank you Linda!
